I’m a returning player and I’ll admit first person was fun but buying cosmetics and only seeing my hands or having to stand still to admire my style. I have like most gamers grown towards more cinematic experiences, that being said I think a third person option would make cosmetics worth it and the game would seem like a legendary movie about the pirate you. I know people complain about advantages but people emote to see around corners so it doesn’t change a thing challenge wise and you rarely run into other players I personally don’t mind a good fight and taking a loss. This game is amazing don’t get me wrong but it really needs to give us the third person option if it hopes to keep its player base alive.
Really NEEDS third person
Ah the old “the player base will leave if X doesn’t happen” LOL. You have zero idea what the player base will do 5 years in, and considering you’re literally the first post I’ve seen in 4 years talking about this, I think the player base is fine…
1st player in this game is the perfect choice. No change needed at all.
There's loads of FPS games with cosmetics that don't have a 3rd person view. It doesn't make or break the game. I personally think it should always be an option. Like I have been playing a lot of Grounded the past few months and I love being able to swap between 3rd and 1st person. Rare mentioned they were considering 3rd person for this game way back in the development phases but they choose 1st person only for the sake of immersion or something... But with the nature of this game it's not like we are looking for realism here we just want to have fun and this game has a lot of comical elements that break immersion so... But yea. While I agree with the opinion that it would be nice to have I don't think it has much of an impact on people sticking around or not. The nature of the game, sailing, PvE etc I think is the biggest thing that makes people leave. They just want a deathmatch like every other FPS and having to manage a ship and deal with the physics just isn't everyones cup of tea. The hourglass at least brings you to the fight (or the fight to you) which helps with one of the biggest draw backs for PvPers having to sail around for hours sometimes just to try and find someone to fight.
Since they have made up their mind on this being 1st person only we wont ever see 3rd person outside of doing emotes.
@magus104 "I personally think it should always be an option."
I agree, some people really like it, no need to limit it as an option.
I do know someone who won't play because of that one thing, vanity rules :)
And the fact that it already works with emotes makes me think a fair amount of the work is already done.
@wardogg-cj Ah, yes... This game that has been entirely about cosmetics and has only been in first person for the last 5 years and reached an all time high player count just a few months ago is suddenly NOW going to start losing its player base because it does not have a third person camera.
Im not much for doom saying about this game, because people have been doomsaying since the first week of launch about how "it will never catch on if they dont do X" then every year after up until now people have been saying "the game is dying because/will die if they dont do THIS!" For a game that has apparently been dying every day for the last 5 years, because it lacks small specific things that some people want, its shocking how alive it is.
It never has had third person, and i feel that third person is not so vital to have that the game will die if it isnt added.
The game does not NEED third person to keep the playerbase active, that is simply just wrong. The game has for the most part only seen a steady increase of players over 5 years with limited third person.
I'm not disagreeing with the idea though, but that last statement was just incorrect. Third person would be interesting to see, but will get very very crammed and difficult to use in tight spaces like under the deck on the sloop.
People say a lot about "checking around corners would be OP" and whatnot but honestly I don't see many situations where that will be an issue in practice. The game is very fast paced when it comes to player interactions, it's not exactly like you're going to be slowly moving the camera around the corner of something to check if the jump spamming pistol sniper skeleton curse guy is there or not, because if you do, you're dead either way. The only way I might see this could be powerful is checking for tuckers, but the whole point of tucking is to wait for the opportunity to strike, so it's not like they're gonna get up and kill you immediately if you just turn the corner normally.

I know people .... emote to see around corners
There's the exploit you're looking for.
3rd person gameplay (Outside of emoting/ sitting) seems bad.
How tight would it be when going bottom deck of your ship in 3rd person PoV, camera skews, yet alone re-designing aiming to accommodate 3rd person gameplay doesn't sound realistic etc.
Sure, it would be cool to see a 3rd person PoV when shooting cannons :D.
That being said, I dis-agree, 1st person should only be kept, you can emote to show off cosmetics in 3rd person, that's enough.@wardogg-cj what about all the people that dont like 3rd person games all together. How would they react to this change. People really need to start thinking further then their own little bubble and not reflect their personal views and opinions to the masses.
Also your point about emoting to look around corners, while yes this is a thing players do, however since emoting takes control away from the player its a risk/reward kind of thing

We don't even have heads, you guys.
Dont be pointin out that i lost me head! Im very sensitive about that fact!

Right, if this were 3rd person I'd never play this game, not my thing.

So what if it is AN OPTION? No one said it should be mandatory.
Why is having it as AN OPTION bad?
@foambreaker they have tried 3rd person during original development they didn't want to go that way.
Also balancing it would be a pita.
Its an fps, it has been since before release and will remain that way. I don't get the people that keep wanting to change core stuff.
If you dont like fps games dont play fps games, i dont play most 3rd person games for the same reason

Sorry, but that doesn't make sense, why can't a game be both, and don't just say balance, be specific. Especially since they have already coded 3rd person.
@eva1977 said in Really NEEDS third person:
Dont know why a 3rd person view has not been implemented, players won't leave for lack of it but it would be a welcome addition.
Because it doesn't work.
@personalc0ffee I can see there might be lots ot issues such as not having a crosshair and not being able to tell where you are aiming or other things but doesn't mean there can't be any ideas for it to be somehow brought in. If that were the case no content would ever be added because a simple idea can't be brainstormed to be implemented. I mean we have a version of 3rd person already just not a full playable one.
No, it doesn't work.
It doesn't vibe with the feeling of the game. They already did this like pre-alpha. Plus the current models would have to be completely redone. We don't have heads, heck even limbs are contorted in odd ways.
Most people think first person is just the player's head. no no no. Often times the full body isn't even rendered.

I don't get that, we have 3rd person in the emotes, so it does work from a technical standpoint. The code is written, the models are done.
Probably won't happen, and as many people have stated above, the lack of 3rd person is not killing the game you don't speak for the masses you speak for you. A lot of work would need to be done as in an entire animation and character model overhaul.
That being said however, one game I can think of that uses the same engine I believe and manages to pull this off very well is Obsidian's "Grounded" which allows you to seamlessly switch between perspectives at any time, without the loss of your crosshair for aiming.
I can't help but wonder if third person perspective would alleviate the sea sickness some of my friends felt when on a ship and seeing the waves rocking thier perspectives.I think Mark Chapman has already gone on record to say they tried it and it didn't work in a way they wanted for SOT.
I think there would be too many instances of the camera bugging out and going crazy during the interior ship and tavern spaces.

My understanding of the models
Sot doesn't even have true first person, meaning the player camera is basically floating closer to the chest area rather than being attached to the actual head bone. This is why when you look down you can't see your characters feet (either that or a shark got my other one) If you zoomed the camera back your character is basically a floating pair of arms.
All the first person animations are likely for the arms only meaning you wouldn't be able to use them for third person. When your character emotes it's essentially loading in a whole different character model to play the emote before switching back.
You would be able to get around this partially by using the full body animations they use for other players in the world.
Other issues with third person
- The further you move the camera back from the character the more you widen the fov.
This causes a two main issues
A: provides an advantage to people in 3rd person because that can see more.
B:may cause stress on weaker systems (Xbox one 👀) because the game needs to render more.
*Tight areas such as below deck will cause incredible camera rubberbanding as the camera adjusts to avoid being in geometry.
Personal thoughts
When you truly think about it first person is the core of this games identity, sea of thieves is about creating your own stories through the eyes of YOUR character. You're not some omniscient being following a character through a linear story.I rushed this a little (it's late) happy to discuss more later 😂
