In the intro we see a crew sailing to the sea of thieves, but who are they? Do we ever see who they are?

I honestly don't know the answer to that, but I keep telling myself that I will invest time to learn more about sea of thieves lore and learn more.
So without being completely useless in this reply.
You might find some success in purchasing Sea of Thieves lore books or alternatively check out Captain Falcore on youtube, he does a lot of videos on lore and speculations. Really enjoyable content to learn more about Sea of Thieves.

Maybe the crew of the Salty Hippo? I re-watched the intro, and it looks like they found the map to the Sea of Thieves on Treasure Trove Cove. Come to think of it, do we know how the Salty Hippo got beached? There could have been a mutiny, with the crew deciding to abandon Captain Blubber on the island in search of the Sea of Thieves.
