The loot system needs updated

  • As sea of thieves has progressed, gold has become easier and easier to attain. The main reason for this being the emissary system. Gone are the days of a full server fighting over a fort which only had around 15k worth of loot in. But yet that 15k was worth more than than 150k now!

However, on the whole, nothing has actually increased in value. We have seen it become much easier to attain gold, yet the value of the loot, e.g. a captains chest has remained the same. This is because the way in which it has become easier to attain gold is because it is easier to get pieces of loot, and you are rewarded with more pieces of loot per voyage, world event etc. This has led to the problem of having up to hundreds of pieces of loot on your ship at once, and spending too much time painfully transporting loot. This also leads to multiple issues if you sink a ship with lots of loot, as if can take up to 30 minutes sometimes to get their loot out of the water and on your ship, meaning having to juggle the loot in the water and having to fight them off when they come back while your still sat their picking up the loot.

This has led to crews becoming less interested with world events, gold hoarder vaults and fighting skeleton ships as it takes to much time to get all the loot on the ship then sold. I have been on countless crews where they had said, we'll just leave the cups or the chest, it's not worth it because they are so low in value and take too much time to transport.

This is one of the main reasons why players become bored with the game, and was partially rectified by the sovereigns which significantly sped up the selling process. However this did not solve the problem. I would propose the following solution:

    1. Reduce the amount of loot given for world events, voyages and skeleton ships. Instead of getting all these little pieces of loot from a fort, it would be better to have one stronghold skull, a stronghold chest, an ancient bone dust and a stronghold keg. Furthermore from ancient vaults, have the chest of ancient tributes and three or four captains chests. From a skeleton ship drop only one skeleton captain skull and one skeleton captain chest and a storage crate.
    2. After doing the first solution, the price loot sells for must go up significantly, meaning that you will still get roughly the same amount of money on average from doing a fort or ashen winds or vault etc.

This will mean that players still earn the same amount of gold from completing these activities, but will spend more time doing them and less time having to mind numbingly walk back and fourth for 10 minutes transporting loot after one.

This will make events much more appealing, stealing treasure much more easy and improve the way the game is played. This would take some time to figure out how the value of everything is increased and the amount of loot decreased to make sure players are still earning a similar amount of gold for the same amount of time, but overall, if done right, would make a lot of activities in the game enjoyable again and the game much more fun to play.

Use your harpoon or buy a new watch.

Also, greed sinks ships :). Take only the things that are worth it and get to an outpost.

That would be using the harpoon and my watch works perfectly fine thank you. I think if you sink a ship you would like to be fully rewarded, and although I like the idea Also, greed sinks ships :). Take only the things that are worth it and get to an outpost. Having a big pile of 100 items where you can't chose between them is not the way to execute that in game.

out of all the stuff you could complain about, this is your worst issue.

  • As it is, the value system seems to make a lot of sense. It is unfortunate gold gains are inflated, but I don't think it has any actual effect.

Take to the perspective of a casual, they sail into enemy broadsides or get lost on large islands for 30 minutes each. The puny Marauder's Chest we're stealing from them doesn't seem valuable to us because we actually know what we're doing, for them, it's a travesty, a reason to uninstall the game and go play Grounded or something.

Gold value being as weak as it is currently without boosts is the kind of struggle new players will go through, they will have trouble keeping a captain's chest on board, they will be stuck on a voyage and get rolled up on by a galleon after like 3 hours of sailing to islands they haven't been to before and getting lost on them.

Emissaries are intended for intermediate players, World Events are massive risk/reward events for intermediate/advanced players and the hourglass system, Pirate Legend rewards/voyages, and the Reaper's Bones Emissary are intended for advanced/experienced players. The rewards for each of these activities in a single, minimalized session are relative to how much you can succeed. This game's playerbase in general, is not great. They will sink a lot to the Kraken, a rogue Skalleon, get knocked off and killed by a Megalodon after 3 bites, a combination of all 3, etc. We don't necessarily need to do anything to the current gold value.

Instead of picking them from your harpoon and putting them on deck, drop the castaways, foul bounty skulls, tea crates, any staff as soon as you have enough of those and you think you need them ... perhaps the defeated crew returns, picks up everything you left and when you return from selling you can sink them again 😎.
