Ships of an opposing faction should NOT be able to spawn onto you from matchmaking while you are currently in a fight with another ship

  • Today I was playing trying to grind up some pvp servants of the flame levels and in between fights while I was gathering up supplies a regular ship not on any faction rolls up to me in the overworld. I tried to queue up for pvp but obviously it wouldn't let me since there was another ship nearby. So I begin fighting them. About 5 minutes into a fight a guardian of fortune ship spawns on me from their matchmaking. Now I'm fighting 2 ships, 3 people against just me and one of those ships has complete free movement and isn't confined to the circle arena. I'm fine with multiple people teaming up against me just out in the main world but if you add a dedicated queue pvp mode with skill-based matchmaking that only matches you up against an opponent with the same ship as you and the same number of players in the crew it should NOT be possible for me to get 3v1'd and stuck in an arena when playing this mode. If I'm not allowed to queue for matchmaking while a ship is near me then nobody else queuing should be able to spawn on me. It's strictly unfair for the game mode. Lost my streak.

  • The way I see it: Solo queuing is just an arcade type of endurance mode. You cannot afford to be solo against any other boat in adventure mode EXCEPT for those you are tasked to sink as a part of the battle.

It's best to avoid conflict at all costs as much as you can because if you get caught in an invasion, you're getting multiple boats to come kill you at once, which includes boats not a part of the invasion battle, ergo, 3rd partying, a design intention of including this in Adventure mode.

Than nobody will be matched with anyone…one side has to give.

Frankly. Your own fault. Why? You open yourself for an attack!
Look at the scene. You had no issue with a random ship coming to fight you, like normal. But second one “spawns” on you, which is basically the same thing as if they sail up on you, it unfair.

What if someone of opposite faction sailed up on you and they were suddenly attacked. You gonna stop attacking them.
I don’t think you would. nobody gonna give up a 2v1(ship) that in your favor.

Your still in open world. Stuff is gonna happen and if your inviting others to challenge you, during your adventure. You best be ready.

I see you. I hear you. But, your doing it wrong

  • @burnbacon

I also hear you but I obviously disagree with pretty much everything you said. And I'm fine with having differing opinions but most of your claims are just factually incorrect.

One side does not "have" to give for the system to work. Match 2 vessles together who are both queuing or you can still have boats spawn on people who are roaming around but not if they're already in ship combat. If the game has code to recognize when I'm in combat such that it doesn't allow me to queue in can have the capacity to remove me from the pool of people that queued boats can spawn on.

Also a boat spawning directly on top of me and forcing an arena around me is not even remotely in the same universe as "another ship just sailing up on me". If another ships is sailing up on me I can see them from significantly further away and I can choose to run. Spawning a boat in my immediate vicinity and locking me into the area while I'm already in combat with another ship that does not get locked into the arena with me is world's different than what you're saying.

Also no I wouldn't mercilessly 2v1 somebody in that situation out of honor and respect for the game mode. I'm not saying everybody needs to have honor and I've been gaming for a very long time so I certainly know that many people wouldn't. But don't accuse me of doing the same. I personally respect the game mode enough that if I was chasing somebody and another player spawned onto them for 1v1 pvp combat I would let them duke it out and just leave or watch and then fight the winner.

Clearly there is some differing in game philosophy here and at the end of the day it's Rare's game and the philosophy that they have in mind for how the game should be played is all that matters, but I just feel like it is inconsistent and incongruous with the intention of the game mode. Sea of thieves has always been a PvEvP game which is the main selling point because it's a pirate game. You know what you sign up for. If multiple ships want to roll up and murder a single ship they can. If a ships wants to roll up on somebody stuck in a kraken and destroy them they can. That's all part of the game experience. But when you introduce a season with a brand new feature dedicated expressly to on demand pvp ship combat that claims to match players on relatively even footing this type of scenario shouldn't be allowed to happen. It defeats the purpose of the mode itself. Either make it so a ship cannot spawn directly on top of me and force me into an arena against multiple foes, some of which aren't confined by the arena, when I'm not afforded the same ability because I can't queue while a ship is near and also because they explicitly stated the mode is supposed to put ship combat on even footing, or if you are going to let a ship spawn on me while I'm already fighting somebody else at least force the other ship out or make them abide by the boundary circle as well. Something.

  • It's an additional consideration you have to be aware of with the hourglass active. Any fights with non invaders have to be over quickly or you get far enough away to be able to dive

Keep an eye on horizons and after initial outpost stock up only do jumping pockets refill unless you've made sure there's no one anywhere near you

  • I too think the game should recognize when you are alrdy in a fight, and not spawn a second ship on you. I can also see this (as always) opens up ways for abuse, like, if you are purposly starting fights on your server - and then run away - just so you have a safe trip home after some wins.
Maybe it could be made so the random ship will too be forced into the circle once it attacks either faction of the fight. But there will be times when a player just randomly comes across a battle and has no way of knowing wether thats a PvP initiated battle or a random one.
I can see thats a difficult issue. As is right now, the game cannot properly detect if you are alrdy in a random fight or not. You cannot even dive as long as there is any single ship nearby.

  • @parrotlord6426 they intentionally made this mode part of normal adventure, so it is added to the normal mix of encounters that are possible. If you start putting restrictions on when battles can occur, it gets more like arena which failed, and also makes queue times worse.

I suspect main reason they don't allow diving with rivals nearby is to stop people abusing the mechanic to run away, not out of concern to keep fight balanced.
