Official Lore-Friendly Ship Prefixes

  • ne thing lacking from sea of theives captaincy for me is prefixes. IRL most famous ships from history have a prefix. HMS, USS, USF, FV ect.
I have an idea for the Devs. We know the devs are moving towards faction affiliation through the recent adventures with save golden sands pitting reapers against athenas fortune and the hints for the next adventure. Why not integrate this into the captaincy update in a more explicit way?
Why don't the devs implement official (lore-friendly) two-three character prefixs for naming our ships. These could be emboldened by the colours of the faction on the ship banner or nameplate or something more tasteful. They could represent an expansion of the current character limit by the prefixs and be totally opt-in.
Some examples of lore-friendly prefixes illustrate the concept include:
    MS/MV- Merchant ship/vessel
GHS/HS: Gold Hoarder Ship/ Hoarder Ship
SOO: Ship of the order (for order of souls)
SS / FS: Servant's Ship/ Flameheart ship (for reapers)
LS / RS: Legendary Ship/ Ramsay's Ship (for Athena)
    Lastly SS: Sovereigns ship.
These are suggestions to illustrate the concept but I'm sure the devs / community have cool prefix ideas. This would encourage players to avail of having a fleet of ships to select from depending on the voyage they plan to do capitalizing on captaincy ability to have a fleet of ships to select from. There's also RP benefits here.

  • I like this. Not much more to add (other than localization might make this unworkable for some non-English speakers).

  • But we can already do this by naming our ships.

Besides SS usually means Steam Ship or emm something else :D

We are all pirates, if you want to role play as I have mentioned before, you can already name your own ship as you wish, but majority of famous pirate ships did not have any prefixes, they just had cool names ^^

  • opt in makes in opportunity without sacrifice or risk so it adds to quality of life, immersion, rp without environmental consequences

that pretty much always gets a yes from me, no exception here

  • The reason so many real ships had those prefixes, is because they were exclusively memebers of a cooresponding group.
"USS" stands for "United States Ship." A ship that only ever sails in the official capacity of the American military.
A privateer doing work for America could not and would not be called "USS whatever."
"HMS" is "Her Majesty's Ship." It's the same with the USS, a term only for ships exclusively from that organization.

So with game factions, a ship using the prefix "MAS" for "Merchant Alliance Ship" could only sail for the Merchant Alliance.
Emmissary status would be automatically applied and unremovable, Merchant Alliance cosmetics for both ship and crew would be automatically applied and unremovable, and you couldn't do any other kind of voyage. Perhaps other restrictions I'm not thinking of.
Heck you might not even be able to sell other kinds of loot to other factions, making it worthless or having you sell it to the Merchants for reduced value, with the idea being that they sell it at actual value for profit.
All in all the idea is as a MAS you can only engage in Merchant Alliance content.
"GHS" "Gold Horder Ships" can only sail for Gold Horders. Automatic emmissary, voyage restriction, forced cosmetics.
    Same for every faction.

Now, is this me saying "no we simply should not have prefixed ships"?
    No, it's not.
We could certainly have such a mechanic.
This post, then, is me pointed out that those ships would be seperate from our normal pirate vessels.
That is, in the same capacity that you can now aquire a captained ship to use as a pirate, you'd have to aquire a different "faction ship" that comes with the prefix, but is entirely a member of said faction. When logging into the game you'd have to explicity decide that you are playing on that ship for that session, without the ability to swap out of that faction status without logging out.
Playing on those ships could be a good way to pointedly grind rep with the given faction, and have it's own added incentives for doing it.
Maybe Rare would also make them distinct from pirate ships using the emmisary status too.

  • @the-old-soul800 for immersion purposes, our captained ships could get the temporary prefix once we claim the emissary flag. But its just stating the obvious imo

  • My ships prefix is "THE" short for the!

I do like the ideas though! Having 2 "SS" prefixes for the most opposite of factions however could be a bit confusing, instead of sovereigns ship, you could possibly do GMS for grand maritime sail ship.

  • Personally, not a fan. As a pirate, I am beholden to no one, except my loyal crew.
