Captain Ships Name and Captained by/log books

  • When you spy glass a captain ship, it tells you the ship name and who its captained by.
Honestly, I get being able to see the ship name, but why show you captains it?
That should only be revealed by reading the captain's log.
It truly ruins experiences when you are chasing someone and they know who exactly is chasing them.
Or a boat is parked behind the rocks and the person has swam to a fort to tuck and you just see the ship and know exactly who's ship it is.
There are thousands of people logging in, scoping out ships looking for streamers and people to troll/harass.
Seeing a ship from the distance and knowing exactly who owns it really does take away from the game.
    Also..
    Log books..
Should despawn after the captain leaves the server instead of float in the water for the next person to find.
If the ship sinks during game play, yes, floating log book, but not just because the captain has left the game.
It can be done like quest items, etc -- Captain leaves, book despawns.
    Anyway, just some suggestions.

  • I've personally enjoyed it. It's brought me some more heat while meg/kraken hunting but overall I enjoy seeing familiar names from afar

As far as streamers go the ones that get tossed servers are not using their ships so that takes care of those ones.

In reality the people that are scanning servers for streamers don't need this feature they already have access to who is on the server.

I get the concern but imo this opt in feature connects the community more than it hurts it, but that's just my view on it.

  • I think books should despawn when leaving the server too. The last thing I need is for some random pirate to send me a message saying, "found your book!"

I haven't been seeing books at the dock since the patch

it was pretty much every server before

  • I never had an issue with being sent obnoxious messages until captaincy started, now it's a weekly occurrence.

I think I've seen at least 1, but I might be mistaken...

No. Sometimes people sink ships to turn in the log book.
The other player should not be able to deny them their log book by quitting.

I find them here and there around the docks. Supplies. Flags.

What if you find a friend on the same server, coincidentally? It's to identify captains and give them a reputation with other players, whether good or bad. Streamers are just streamsniped, anyways.

That should only be revealed by reading the captain's log.

How? I don't understand this, please explain.

Or a boat is parked behind the rocks and the person has swam to a fort to tuck and you just see the ship and know exactly who's ship it is.

I think if there's a ship trying to hide, someone's tucked on the fort. You'd just assume it was the tucker's.

There are thousands of people logging in, scoping out ships looking for streamers and people to troll/harass.

Streamsniping. Mentioned it before. Sure, it's a teeny tiny bit easier, but cest la vie. It's a small price to pay for a new mechanic.

Seeing a ship from the distance and knowing exactly who owns it really does take away from the game.

No. What if you sink a stacked galley, playing for 10 hours on end, only for them to ragequit and deny you 25k? This scenario is unrealistic, but if anyone's feeling particularly vindictive, then they can just Alt + F4 and load up a new server.

If the ship sinks during game play, yes, floating log book, but not just because the captain has left the game.

That'd probably be unbalanced, or really hard to code. Most logbooks are only a measly 300 gold.

It can be done like quest items, etc -- Captain leaves, book despawns.

    Fair, fair.

    no
i love spawning at an outpost, finding a logbook in the water and looking at it's name and it's accomplishments. It also let's me find some funny ship names, like when I found a logbook belonging to the "Sea of MURDER". It just feels like with that name, the captain bought the ship and decided he was gonna try to kill everyone he saw with it.
