Letters of Marque

  • After reconsidering I don't really know whether this would actually be a good idea or not so it's up to you to figure it out.

I thought of this concept when really tired of Letters of Marque. Basically what it would do is it would ensure a reward for PvP whether the crew has loot or not.

How it works is rather simple, Letters of Marque are ordered from the Sovereigns towards any random ship on the map. It is a privilege to captained ships only. First step is to find them, only information given is the region they're in. Once found all you have to do is sink them and an item playing as evidence comes up, once brought back to the sovereigns you are rewarded accordingly.

Now I can see how this could maybe be used as an exploit and that's why I'm unsure. I want it to be rewarding but not overpowered either, just enough to keep players engaged. I don't wish for the Sovereigns to become a trading-company-friendly version of the Reapers therefore you do not gain any commendation, reputation or anything else from the Sovereigns. What the piece of evidence could be? That I don't know yet either... This is in some way the bounty hunter feature people have already requested in the past, but I can't say for certain whether this is the developers really want from the Sovereigns as we know close to nothing from their intentions and what is to become of them.

That's my detailed idea, up to you to discuss it.

  • If you wanna do reaper, do reaper.
It sounds like the victim isn't allowed to somewhat opt out (not flying emissary) in your system so all it's going to do is reward people for pvp against people who don't want to.

Your idea makes the problem worse.

  • I’m with @PithyRumble… as someone more likely to be in a Letter than buying one, a giant No Thanks. I really don’t like the idea of rando TDM’er spending a few coins to find out where I am, that’s what the sails and spyglass are for.

  • Basically what it would do is it would ensure a reward for PvP whether the crew has loot or not.

But pvp players don’t care for loot. They just want to sink ships
(Regardless if the other crew even fights back)
Why reward people for sinking a ship that isn’t even partaking in pvp? So far I’ve seen and read about pvp players who sink ships and leave the loot or just fire on a ship with nobody on board.

  • I apologise for any pedantry, but I believe you mean a letter of marque (not marquee)

    Let·ter of marque
    [letter of marque]
    NOUN
    historical
    (letters of marque)
a licence to fit out an armed vessel and use it in the capture of enemy merchant shipping and to commit acts which would otherwise have constituted piracy.

A marquee… is a gazebo, or pop up tent.

    Mar·quee
    [mɑːˈkiː]
    NOUN
    BRITISH
a large tent used for social or commercial functions.
    NORTH AMERICAN
a canopy projecting over the entrance to a theatre, hotel, or other building

  • @peteloaf777 I’d be ok if someone bought a letter authorizing them to erect a gazebo on my boat, but not the other thing 😉
