A big personal achievement of mine! I wanted to defeat the Kraken solo on a galleon. Unfortunately I didn't get the kill because I didn't know it'd despawn before I could kill all the tentacles needed. I think you need 5 and I killed 3. I'll look up the specifics later.
But turns out that dropping anchor WAS the right answer.
The Kraken's routine is very ordinary so as long as you anticipate its moves its rather quite easy to stay afloat.
I think the Kraken does about 60planks of damage before despawning. I didn't think to count it. But typically it's 6 in the hold and eventually it'll damage every spot on the middeck multiple times.
For safety sake I was repairing all holes at the expense of canyoning. But it was fairly manageable to keep the hold dry so that's where I'll probably make up the time to shoot down the tentacles.
The speed of shooting also has to be made up with hit accuracy. I had an accuracy of about 75% (those wiggly tentacles grrr).
And that's not accurate enough to kill enough tentacles in time either.
Lastly the obvious one is you can't get sucked into a tentacle or that's gonna be a guaranteed sink.
