Adding buffs to cosmetics (Read before bombing me with hate)

  • (Keep in mind this is just ideas that a couple of friends and I thought of and I'm fully aware that it might be hard or impossible to implement in the game)

This is something my friends and I thought of while playing the game over the time it's been out. While playing the game we thought of the possibility of adding buffs to certain cosmetics like how the gold skeletons has a more of a defense buff to them.

    Example: Gold Hoarder Cosmetics

Ship Wheel and Capstan: Since both are covered in gold it makes it more difficult to damage but not impossible.
Cannons: Also covered in gold which would have a chance of not knocking off the player when cannon is hit with a cannon ball.
Figure head: A gold figure head that would make the front a little more protected from frontal cannon fire.

    (Extra Bonus buff)
If you have all cosmetics for the ship, it will add a buff which makes it a little bit harder to put holes into the ship (taking the idea of the gold skeletons being harder to kill) but you have to have ALL of the Gold Hoarder cosmetics from the Gold Hoarder faction

Gold Curse: While using wearing this curse it has the similar effect like the gold skeletons but only adding a small bit of defense to the player.

(Again, keep in mind that this is just something we thought up and we are aware it's probably hard or impossible to add at this point)

I do want to add that there is also counters to this, like for the Gold Hoarder would be lowered into the water more and the player would be slow in movement (if wearing the curse)

  • In general the last thing we need is buffs to defense imo as it just widens the skill gap but also with the new respawn timer it's already taking forever to sink a crew that is competent at combat/defense if skilled tdm isn't involved.

and that's just one of the issues with it, cosmetic buffs separate new players from those that have everything and it also interferes with personal styling, as it is now people can choose cosmetics entirely based on expression and what they like, imo it doesn't benefit the environment to interfere with that.

  • Not gonna send you any hate, but I absolutely don't ever want to see this in SoT. Part of what I like about it is that there is no real vertical progression.

  • @wolfmanbush I understand what you mean, it was just ideas my friends and I have came up with and they all wouldn't be for defense, we came up with some with different buffs depending on the style of the cosmetics, for example the Freedom Cosmetics (or Black Pearl Cosmetics) having the full set would just give the ship a speed buff since the black pearl is supposed to be the fastest ship, but again these are just things we thought of and we had lots more but it would take to long

  • @redeyesith I get that and I agree with you, these ideas were more for fun then to be taken seriously, we thought of them because of just playing the game for so long and thought of something that sounded interesting

  • I believe what makes SoT so pure is that there's nothing that can be obtained/used that gives people an inherent benefit over others (people will argue that the DA sails are, but I don't believe they do). I think adding those things in theory would be neat but make the game wildly unbalanced and deter people from playing. Someone who started a week ago can obliterate someone who's been playing for years, and that's the way it should be.

  • @vendia Very understandable, and I see your point in it making it unbalance but there was more to this idea but it would've taken to long to write out and I wouldn't think people would want to read all of what we thought of so I just used that as an example but I still see your point

  • possibility of adding buffs to certain cosmetics

So in a way, only those with these cosmetics will have the Buffs, thus making the balance of the game a horror show.

as you described, Gold Hoarder Cosmetics. "covered in gold it makes it more difficult to damage" and "own all cosmetics for the ship, it will add a buff which makes it a little bit harder to put holes into the ship "

Breaks the balance between those who Played longer and those just joining.
    I'm a No.

  • @burnbacon There is a downside to it all, the ship would be lowered into the water and the player would be slower in movement but again this is not to be taken seriously

  • @night-raptors I get it, it would be cool to see some RPG elements thrown in like that, but thinking of SoT having a "meta" just makes me cringe. I think the game would have had to be designed in this way from day one and as you've acknowledged would be near impossible to do at this stage. I loved reading the post and has made me even think of how they could do this and my only thought is to make it strictly pve content that those elements would apply to. Example: If you wanted to do a skeleton fleet event, you could customize your ship the way you'd like to benefit or have an easier time doing those, something like using the order of souls ledger cannons would cause each cannon shot to add two holes (puncture and exit wound), but if it were those same cannons shooting at another live player it would not have that added benefit and act as a default cannon (as it does now).

  • @vendia I see what you mean, and I do see a lot of downsides to this idea, it was just something fun to think about and I do have ideas for almost all the cosmetics in the game but it would take to long to go into every detail with the ups and downs to each one and of course it's nearly impossible at the point to add any of this, but it's still fun to think about

  • I like the idea of buffs if they are implemented correctly. There would need to be trade-offs to balance out the risk/reward style that they game is based off.

Example: you suggest a capstan that is harder to damage. Sure, love it. It would also need to be slower to turn, or slower to repair, or limited to 1/4 turn less than if that weren't equipped...something to balance out the reward that comes with equipping such an item.

Example 2: Cannons that reduce damage from incoming artillery and limit knockback...sure, that comes with maybe a slower cannon loading...slowed from 1.5 seconds to 2 seconds or something.

Without a negative trade-off, this just becomes another Rust/Tark style game.

  • @sweetsandman Those were the trade offs I have in mind (in a way) but I didn't think people would want to read every little detail in my brain but it seems that I should've done that in the begining

  • @sweetsandman I wouldn't want these tied to cosmetics though, as that starts making gameplay implications on what you can equip rather than your personal preference of style. If there were a way to obtain limited time buffs (as in running on a timer, or fading once you go to the Ferry or sink) over the course of the session from engaging with the server I would not be strictly opposed (like finding a potion such as Breath of the Sea - this is interesting since it is also Loot like the Ashen Winds Skull so you choose money or a temporary perk).

So there is a place for potential buffs, but not associated to cosmetic choices in my opinion. There are loads of other ways that this could be approached and balanced (much like CCBs, Rowboats, and so on all provide advantages but must be obtained in gameplay and are limited use).

  • No just no! that would upset the balance of the game and would only benefit older players .
Keep all pay/earn to win stuff away, just make everyone on even plain field like it is where only skill, resources, bit of luck and experiences is required.
Also I much prefer seeing pirates in what cosmetics they want to use or wear to be unique rather see the same cosmetics like the DA sails

Now where me Megakeg, i wanna blow something up!

  • @butterfinger750 This wasn't meant to be taken seriously, it's nearly impossible at this point to do such a thing anyways. And it wouldn't be to much unbalance because there's tradeoffs with it just like @sweetsandman said, Example: you suggest a capstan that is harder to damage.

Those would be tradeoffs but I'm not fighting to have this in the game, it was just a fun idea, if I wanted an unbalanced pirate game, I would go play atlas

  • What makes SOT great is that every player from day one has the same tools and weapons as the old timers. The only difference is in the experience of using these tools and that comes with time. No one is overpowered, no one is underpowered, all have the same possibilities in a fight.

Adding buffs will just create an unnatural loss of balance and harm the risk side in adventure mode.

  • do i need to say no in spanish and french and english and german

  • If it has ANY affect to combat or player interaction; no, I'm against it. You should not be rewarded for using any cosmetics, you should have the freedom of using what you LIKE, instead of rolling up to a ship, they have all the "meta" stuff on and then you look at it and go "alright I guess we lose" because you're using good looking stuff instead of whatever is most powerful.

THE ONLY WAY there will be any benefit from cosmetics is if it affects PvE only; and that its a skill tree system tied to that cosmetic; so the more you use that skin, the more "skill points" you earn to use on that cosmetic (not even the entire category, but that specific item. Think about it like Team Fortress 2 "Strange" item kill counters, affecting only those items when you have them equipped.)

  • @gallerine5582 I see your point like all of the other points in this thread but I do keep saying that this was just an idea my friends and I thought up, of course with these ideas there was a lot of tradeoffs with each cosmetic and each one (even separate pieces) has a benefit, it just wouldn't meet up the full benefit if it's just pieces of it. Like the Gold Hoarder example, the capstan would be slower to rise since it's gold, and it would take longer to repair the ship.

(It's already to late to even try an idea like this anyways)

  • I will add, this would be cool for a spin-off game, which I think SoT has potential for at some point down the road. Say like a single player or even co-op RPG spin-off where you have some kind of stats and perks and stuff that different cosmetics could modify. In particular since you meant this thread in a more hypothetical light anyways.

Cause yea, SoT has built up a fair bit of lore over the life of it with novels, comics, and an evolving game world. That opens it up to the concept of franchise potential which would allow them to explore other genres and takes before some day moving on to Sea of Thieves 2 for round two of the Adventure game genere they started with.

  • Whilst it's a good concept, it's just not for SoT.
