Frequent Crashes After 2.5.3 June 22nd
C'mon Rare! Give us something. I'm fed up. About to quit playing with not a word from anybody that they're even aware of the issue. Just raised reapers and lost an easy sink. They were fire bombing me in a storm and had terrible aim. Why did they win? My game crashed. Lost my chains and my cursed canonballs. I'm so angry. A month now its been with no word.
Yesterday I had this issue on PC and crashed to the desktop twice. The frames stutter, then it freezes for a few seconds and crashes. I've been playing since day one, and the only bug that was this bad was one of the limited voyages that would boot me from the game when I tried to dig up the new loot.
These things wear on players over time, so I really do hope they get it sorted out soon. I really wanted to play this weekend, but all too often this game has some game breaking bug or glitch that makes me wait until the next update.
Im on PC 3080 ti with I9-1200k And my game crashes every time I play the sunken pearl Tale. So I know it cant be a machine problem. Right when I get into the water to fight the sirens it crashes. Frustrating because if I try to play again I have to sail all the way back over. Swim down the entire level. Go through the caves and puzzles again. just to crash as soon as I get to fight the sirens. Even more specifically it crashes right after I kill the second siren. Right when I fire a shot at the third one it crashes. I can play the game for hours doing other things but it seems to just be something with the pirate tales crashing.
Had MULTIPLE crashes since the adventure update.
Crashed while sailing, firing cannons, swimming, in mid air.
Today I was doing a vault voyage to finish of commendation, dug up the chest with the vault key in, just as I got to the shoreline game crashed.
I rejoin and spawn on my ship, so I go looking for the chest and it was GONE. I know where I was when the game crashed, I even went back to where I dug it up, nope nothing.
So not only do I lose cannonballs etc I lose the vault key too.
I've tried hard reset, cleared cache and reinstalled the game.
SOMETHING is wrong on Rares end and since last adventure update, getting kinda annoyed nothing has been mentioned by Rare.Coming here to add my experience to the pile. Playing on Series X with friends that are on PC and Xbox One, and we've been experiencing crashes for the past couple of months that simply did not happen before.
In fact, I think this is the first time Sea of Thieves has been crashing on me or the friend with the Xbox One ever since we started playing more than a year ago. I've seen it happen for PC users, but the game used to run perfectly on console—it certainly did for me.
My most recent crash was last night, and very shortly after rejoining the session I bumped into a dude who told me his game had just crashed as well, so these might be server-wide issues. When playing with a crew, we've been experiencing the crashes individually though, but one often follows another.
Last night our grade 5 OoS galleon crashed with about 2-300,000 gold worth of loot on board just as we were sailing to sell up.
Nobody could stand on the ship anymore and would fall through the floor j to the sea. After mermaiding back on multiple times and even crashing the game to rejoin previous session, nothing worked, and we had to watch out ship sail into the Red Sea and sink. Thanks Rare - I expect compensation for hours wasted.@

Can definitely confirm there are server issues going on that affect more than one person. I've had so many people crash at the same time or within minutes of each other. In fact, I've gotten to the point where if my game crashes during PvP, I hope that they crashed too because I know my Series X can load back in really quick. I still don't carry around cursed canonballs though or excessive amounts of good food specifically because of these constant crashes. So I guess there's a trade off. Can't comfortably have a good inventory during a fight.
Also seems like every single time I get 2 or 3 waves into treasury of sunken shores, I crash without fail.
Also had another session last night where we were running a galleon with 2 PC and 2 Xbox One players doing the legend of the sunken kingdom.
One Xbone player was crashing constantly, but one interesting thing that happened was that halfway up the Shrine of Ocean's Fortune, both xbox players crashed at the exact same time, but I didn't. The other PC player was keeping watch on the surface so not sure what would have happened to him.Crashed again for my friend while we were battling 2 other player ships, FotD was active, and we were in the middle of the Skelly Fleet with the 2 others. Making me wonder if there's just too much going on sometimes on a server causing the crashes. But that still wouldn't explain why I never crashed before the June update.
On PC, I had two crashes on Saturday night and one today, so far.
It's frequent enough to be concerning.
On top of that, I see a lot of random "lurches" (like frame stutter but not reported as FPS drops by the counter nor appearing as ping spikes). It makes me think it's the client build itself that's got issues.
On the Microsoft Store client.
PC Specs:
Ryzen 7 3800XT CPU
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super GPU
16GB DDR4 RAMEdit: make that twice today. I've tried several fixes, including making sure my graphics drivers are up to date, letting it finish checking files when I reload (no issues), I've reduced the quality of the background Game Bar DVR, and I've disabled any unnecessary background processes. Given the number of people reporting issues with the game crashing on multiple platforms, I can only conclude that the problem is with the build itself.
Getting the same problem that TB0NEZ is getting. Had already 4 crashes doing the Sunken Pearl quest.
Having to navigate to the edge of the map and then swimming to the very bottom of the ocean, only to progress a little and then crash without reaching a new checkpoint is definitely not my idea of fun.
I rarely crash otherwise.
@elceifas I'll be honest, I think The Sunken Pearl crashes are a separate issue. I've heard sooooo many people including myself have that same issue at specific points throughout Sunken Pearl where as the other crashes seem to be completely random.
I just wish that at the very least we could keep our inventory when the game detects a crash. We know it can differentiate because it let's us join back to the same session. I'm tired of being too scared to carry cursed canonballs, good food, and loaded supplies because I keep losing half of it to crashes.
@tb0nez Hey, I've done some trial and error and I was able to complete the sunken pearl tale by playing on windowed mode. Turning off the screen shake and reducing resolution may also help.
@tb0nez Hmmm that's interesting. I've crashed similarly but not exclusively. I often crash while at sea as well. Worst is right before PvP.
Yeah, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to our crashes. Could happen anywhere on the map. Two out of the three of us crashed within 10 seconds of a server merge the other day though.. but again, this doesn't seem to be the exclusive reason.
Pretty tired of the whole affair now, and have practically stopped playing anyway :(I am getting crashed to desktop/dashboard extremely often now. My entire crew also has the same issue and they are a mix of Xbox and PC players however it seems my PC crewmate crashes less but still crashes nonetheless. It is without warning and has had severe impact on us playing the game properly. We almost lost a Athena chest because of it and we did lose a Athena steal because of it. Rare. You need to acknowledge this and fix it please.

This right here is it. That's the most frustrating thing is the lack of acknowledgement. It wasn't listed as an ongoing investigation in patch notes. It wasn't addressed on their Twitter or the forums. But Season 7 is coming guys! We have stools now! You can carry your own stool!!
Ridiculous. Not even any kind of word about even seeing any of this. I learned this is so much bigger than I realized. I thought it was only on console too. Apparently just more frequent on console. I've even heard it from some of the SoT Twitch partners. And still no acknowledgement.
I'll pile on.
I play on PC with my 2 boys and their friends.
My youngest and I crash randomly - with one specific trend: we usually crash together - sortof.Example 1: I start a galleon and invite my boys and 1 other. My youngest accepts his invite about 30 seconds later. When I crash (could be 10 mins, could be an hour in...random), he crashes within 30 seconds later. EVERY TIME! It's not a fluke. It's to the point that when one of us crashes, the other one gets 'prepared' to do the same and it happens without fail. By the way, my 2nd son has no issues.
But it doesn't matter who hosts the boat (we tested).
Example 2: My 2nd son hosts the boat and invites us. My 1st son joins first, I join about 10 seconds later. My 1st son crashes (10 - 60 mins randomly), and I will crash 10 seconds later. Without fail.....everytime.
I have spent a lot of time and taken some drastic steps in my attempts to fix this.
This weekend, I COMPLETELY wiped and reloaded my PC. It has ZERO antivirus, updated windows, the latest NVIDIA drivers, and a fresh Sea Of Thieves install. That's it... I didn't install anything other than Sea of Thieves! Same crashes, just like before. It's not a ME problem, RARE. It's a YOU problem.
Please acknowledge and report status on this issue. Losing treasure and battles because of a bug defeats the purpose.I'm happy to help troubleshoot this with the devs. Just contact me.
UPDATE: August 19, 2022
ISSUE RESOLVED!!...at least, for me.
TLDR: Licensing issue. My son and I were unknowingly sharing a single game license on 2 different computers.
Long answer: I opened a ticket with support and got cookie cutter answers....3 different times. Finally, I requested level 2 support and got a response from someone who actually looked up my account, my playtime, my logs, etc. (VEGA...you rock.)
He discovered that my son and I were logging in with the same game license. But SoT does a license check PERIODICALLY and then ends the game session when a violation is found, hence the seemingly random crashes on both of our computers. My son used to play on Xbox with the Game Pass, and when he started using PC, we let his Game Pass run out - not realizing that Game Pass was how we were licensed. But the confusing part is that SoT is still launchable without Game Pass (Microsoft....seriously? So dumb...).The solution was simply purchase a copy of SoT on his PC (we chose Steam for that purchase) and problem solved.
Hope this helps some of you - obviously, results may vary.
P.S. I also learned from this that a PC can still use Xbox Game Console app and join parties without the Game Pass. Yet, another thing that made this confusing.
Yeah crashes have been annoying. Fortunately, I have only had 3-4 since the last update. Yesterday though, crashed back to desktop while fighting a brig and sloop. Somehow left my ship in a spin where they didn't get me, but generally that is a RIP. I'm pretty sure these crashes happen when there's server load issues/too much action and loot in one location.
