There once was a game called Puzzle Pirates

  • It was released back in 2003.
It had a bunch of great social features and I wholeheartedly believe Sea of Thieves would be transformed if it had a couple of them too.

    • Hub where players can talk to each other, play poker (other games too) together.
[Look up "Puzzle Pirates Lima Island" for reference]

    • View other's profiles with their pirate doing a pose in their best clothes for a portrait. (This could be done with a business card type of thing... And yes, your pet can pose with you too)

    • Instead of censoring swear words in the chat, substitute the words with humorous pirate slang. [Look up the "puzzle pirates list of known filtered words fandom", at your own risk]
Some of the ones they use are too risky to have by today's standards but I believe Rare could have a more tame list of substitute words.

    • With all that pirate chat going on in close proximity, Puzzle Pirates had a social circle feature. This is especially necessary when you have text chat. People gather into a circle so you don't have to butt in to all the other conversations going on around you.

Sea of Thieves isn't a top down, pixelated MMO.
It's a beautiful game. I don't see it being able to handle 47 players running around on an island.
4 crews of 4, 16 players on an island. We had it in arena so we know the game can handle at least that amount of players. If you can have more add it later.
You don't have to start off with an amazingly detailed hub world either start off small. Add all the details later.
Worry about the core features before you start adding paved streets and waste being thrown out the windows of two storey buildings. Dueling sessions and bounties.

Add those in later updates, we have time :)

  • Intriguing. 🤔

    Hub:
I like the idea of having a personal space you can decorate and show off, but I don't want it to be instituted in such a way that it takes pirates away from their (and others') adventures. Perhaps if they simply added more cosmetic options into your ship to make it more personalized, or to show off your crew's past accomplishments?

    Profile Viewer:
Could be useful, but where would it be implemented? With your crew? Also, it kind of takes away the mystery of who you might encounter - why socialize with someone when I can see who they are at a glance? Also, seems kind of redundant, since Xbox Live and Steam profiles are already a thing.
Still, it could lead to a lot more cosmetic options to potentially unlock.

    Bad Language Substitution:
I like where you're going with this, but I fear pirates would still abuse it to no end - they will fund a way to get around it or something. Having this almost seems like you'd be giving pirates permission to be rude. I mean, I know they can be, but do they really have to be? I think the answer to that, in order to allow everyone to have a good time, is no. Mind your manners, pirate! 😉

    Social Circle:
With everything that Steam and Xbox Live offer in terms of friends lists, messaging, clubs/clans, and the myriad of ways to communicate using in-game and external sources (like Discord), I think Rare has most of their bases covered in this particular Arena.

  • The other thing that Puzzle Pirates had was a very complex and finely balanced economy. Players earned gold from sailing and completing missions as in Sea of Thieves; but they could also harvest raw materials and sell them to other players, who would use them to make clothes and weapons and cannonballs, and sell them in shops to yet other players. There was also person-to-person trade allowed, and you could gamble playing Poker, Hearts, and other games.

The commodity runs that you can now do in Sea of Thieves are somewhat reminscent of the sorts of voyages you would undertake in Puzzle Pirates.

It was hard to get very rich in Puzzle Pirates, although dedicated players could do so. But there were sufficient gold "sinks" in the game to balance out the ways in which you could earn gold. For example, black clothing required black dye, which could only be made from Kraken ink. Because Kraken ink was a rare commodity, it became very expensive, and so black dye, and black clothes, became expensive too; with all prices being set by supply and demand.

Sea of Thieves has too little in the way of money "sinks". The 200gp you spend on buying voyages was clearly intended to be that, but it is a pittance and there are now too many other ways to make gold without needing to buy a voyage (e.g. Forts, Fortresses, Skelly Ships, Random Loot, Ashen Winds, etc. etc. etc) Rare's only answer to this problem is 8,000,000gp ship parts for Pirate Legends, but they are optional, and simply serve to show you have -- or once had -- that sort of money to splash around.

I do not suggest Sea of Thieves tries to reproduce the complex economy of Puzzle Pirates. Despite the common theme, they are very different games. However, Sea of Thieves might benefit from more money sinks, and I would personally like to see gambling games introduced, it it were possible.

  • Puzzle pirates still exists guys. It’s free on its website or even on steam.
