Lower The Game Size by choosing what settings we will play on.

  • Sea of Thieves is a Big Game, that is for sure, but lots of space is most likely taken by absurd resolution graphics. And vice versa too. Why we need all other graphic files if the game will be played on lowest/highest/middle/whatever settings anyway? And game only will increase in size in future as content is being added, so it would be nice decreasing the size of game in any way, before it will be only game on laptop/computer.

  • As a GAAS (game as a service) it needs to be constantly updated to keep the audience in the game. And the devices that run such a service must be up to date.
That would be like asking Microsoft to stop releasing new operating systems because your computer can only run Windows 7.

  • @daxie626
In 4 years, it hasn't reached 100 GB. I'd say that's pretty good. The 6 GB updates are because of the compression they use + changing already downloaded files, you're not actually getting 6 extra GB of space taken every update.

  • It's not the biggest game, but I believe what the OP is talking about is essentially just one function of Smart Delivery as it was originally proposed. You would only need to download the assets you need to run the game at your desired quality.

So textures would be divided into packs and your PC/console would only download the highest quality packs that it is going to utilise. You see it sometimes with games that have optional "4K textures" packs - or games that recognise you are on Series X so automatically give you the better quality version.

I don't have an issue with this in principle (some folks just can't afford to get more space for games), just whether it's actually feasible for a game that wasn't built from the ground up with that system in place.

  • As long as graphics continue to not interfere with online performance, I will remain relatively happy - even if it means waiting a bit longer for larger downloads during updates.

  • @daxie626 textures and shaders are so irrelevant when compared to overall game size. The 72GB of SoT is mostly the game itself (code, inner workings with objects/locations/interactables/physics). I would be surprised if the entirety of the textures are over 4MB and low to high res would probably only be a difference of 2MB. The big difference in quality of things like textures and shaders are the HW for processing them, not their file size.

The growth in game file size is due to ALL the new content that has come out since launch. Additions, not replacements, and therefore the overall size grows. We got new interactables, weapons, NPCs with abilities, locations got more details added, physics (anyone else remember the mighty tow rowboat?)

  • I think it has reasonable space usage :)
you know it is such a beautifull game and I mean there are little to no loading times so I think it is awesome :)

But I get what you mean.. like an "SD" version of the full "HD" game :)
so you could play earlier than wait for the whole install :D

  • This would absolutely be a welcome change. I have a friend who would like to play the game but currently does not have space to install the almost 100 GB of data required.

  • There are a few games that already do this kind of optimizing but its never cheap.

This question is always the first when it comes to new features: Will it substantially increase revenue?
If the answer is "No.", or "Yes, but less then it's cost.", then its very unlikely to be ever implemented.

  • Actually, if it was possible to for example download the Pirates of the Caribbean Tall Tales separately you could probably drastically lower the file size too.
Just a bunch of areas you never go back to and probably won't access during normal gameplay.
