Athena and merchant loot

  • So, I'm sure this must have been brought up before, but I have a problem with Merchant loot in the standard Athena quests.

Currently, everyone just picks up the loot and drops it at the feet of the NPC because it doesn't offer anything for your rep. It's an obligatory throwaway step we have to take....and I feel like this is a missed opportunity.

Why not have some Athena merchant items? just a thought.

    Happy sailing all

Same could be said for x mark map digs, skulls, riddles, etc. All only offer a small chance at athena loot. Many believe it should solely give athena loot given no other faction mixes in other faction's loot with their quests.

Honestly the last time I did regular athena or ashen for that matter was back before emissary update and the extension to Athena 20. Athena 1-10 was done in the roar speed running and only taking the ashen athena chest if that tells you how bad it used to be.

  • Athena voyages are supposed to be harder. Not having a guarantee of getting exactly what you want is how Rare does that.

You're also forgetting that not every crew is 100% PL.

  • Technically there is Athena Merchant loot (crates of legendary voyages) but yeah, i get what you mean.

Personally would be against legendary cargo crates, only criteria is they need to be semi rare, like the majority of athena loot.

  • You should be lucky, you can just drop the boxes and be done with it. Im sure the old pirates still remember the animal cages. You pretty much had to start with the animal collection missions when you did Athena runs. (Or you could wait for the timer to run out... but that took ages.)

EDIT: Also there was no emissary bonus... just the Athena chest, no trinkets either.

  • @ghostfire1981 Animals were always, and still are, easy.

True, but i just meant that nowadays you can just dump all merchant stuff during Athena missions, and back then you more or less had to do the animal collection if you wanted to be effective in your Athena grind.

We did not grind Athena that much, but i did get to level 10 before the emissary system.

Also its still fun to every now and then do some animal collection missions.

  • @ghostfire1981 Most of the time you could already find the animals needed at the other islands you visited for riddles and chests. It was easy!

  • @galactic-geek until you had that one guy that took one of your chicken crates and dunked it of your ship (actually had this happen by an enemy player that boarded and had less then 10 seconds on the ship.

By the time we noticed it and watched back the vod of our residential streamer it wass too late.

Animal voyages aren’t hard but when they where the merchant maps in athena’s it could be a real pain. Since failing to deliver even one animal for whatever reason meant voyage basicly failed

This is why I sail solo most of the time, prevent boarders wherever possible, and wish we could purchase replacement cages from the MA.
