Filters in Pirate Selection

  • To start off I understand Rare wants every Pirate to be unique. Okay fine, but can we get some tools to narrow down the kind of Pirate the spawns in the Pirate selection so we're not sifting through a million options we know we're not going to want so we can find a Pirate we know we want a lot quicker.

Sex is the most obvious. Some people are already dead set on either a male, or female pirate why not make it so only one, or the other spawns so they're not sifting through a ton of options they are already going to reject. Eye color is another one. While there are dyes in the game it wouldn't hurt to allow people to narrow down the default hair color they want. Another option should be skin color. The last one I can think of, but I could understand not doing is body shape.

Maybe only allow filters if you purchased the Pirate Appearance Potion. Could be an incentive for people to actually buy it. There are some things I don't like about my current pirate, but not enough to buy a potion and spend 3-4 hours sifting through pirates, especially when my current pirate has all the right colors from eyes, hair, makeup and skin tone. If I could guarantee those features I wouldn't mind taking a crack at changing my pirates appearance.

  • Imo the push for some form of filters and customization when it comes to pirate picking in this game isn't really different than saying why does this have to only be a pirate game why can't we be western bandits or wizards

there are parts of this game that are intentional and integral to the foundation of the experience.

I do think that individuality through vanity expansion in game is some wiggle room to try to offer people more choices but the entire point is to get people outside of their comfort zones not to get them closer to them when it comes to the initial choice

parts of the game can evolve but when it comes to the foundation I think their vision should be what holds. I think random is a breath of fresh air and personally I enjoy what it's done for my choice of character and others I have seen around me.

  • That doesn't really make any sense. Tons of games have character creation and it doesn't compromise the genre of the game. Sea of Thieves having a character creation won't make it any less of the game it is and I'm not even suggesting a character creation, but a some tools to make picking a pirate easier and less tedious. If you're dead set on a certain look you're going to spend hours cycling through pirates till you find it. I've done that, I have friends who have done that, I've recently met new players who have done that. Why not add some tools to stream line that process. Every pirate remains unique like Rare wants, but the player can find a pirate closer to what they want more easily.

As I've said for some people like myself are on the fence about changing their pirate and if I had a way to guarantee certain features about my pirate I'd actually buy a Pirate Appearance Potion which means more money for Rare.

  • I agree with you 100%, mate. Especially when we're talking about obvious things like gender and skin color.

Do you really want to bring sex and race unto this? 😅

Considering that for 99% of players those two choices are already set in stone, yes. Also, I imagine the filters would be optional. People that still want that fully random experience can still get it.

  • So when I first got the game, I didn't even realize you got to roll again!

I thought it was "OK, pick one of these 5 or 7 or whatever it was".

So i got like some dude that looks 90 but whatever, I've learned to love him like an ugly baby or a bulldog.

Anyway, since then I've rolled a few others just for fun. (I HAVE LIKE 9 XBOX LIVE PROFILES).

What I have found...is that I go in with a predertimed mind set of what I want.

BUT the character creator is SO UNIQUE that through of all my accounts I've always chosen a Pirate that goes 100% against my predertimed mindset/character.

So the moral of the story is don't mess with it. Enjoy it the way it is and go in with an open mind.

    Wow, drama much?
Sorry but everything youve just said is extremely dumb to a laughing point, the exaggeration over people asking to make them look closer to something they would like...

"isn't really different than saying why does this have to only be a pirate game why can't we be western bandits or wizards" Bruh.......
No it wont make Sea of Thieves different at all, players wont have to spend many hours just to find something they would have chosen sooner.
The majority of us who wants an assist in the character creation are not asking for a complete overehaul, zoom switch emotes to see their faces better and soft filters like gender skin tone and weight. Age would be good as well.

The vast majority knows what they want before they even enter to the character creator, they know if they want to be a male or female, light or dark making us go through other characters is just a waste of time.

You might find it fun and funny to play as a deformed ogre but for many of us it kills the experience, so enough with the dumb gatekeeping on this.

I think that random keeps selection interesting and allows people to grow to cherish a character as they are.

It's fine to not agree with the how it is but I think it offers something to the game that is unique and valuable.

"Ah **** here we go again"

    Really? Again?
Since 99% of us know what we are? Yes hundred percent yes.

Do you think that black characters would more likely to be killed or something?
Make someone to be what he likes wont make him racist or sexist, what would make you understand that?

  • @wolfmanbush Thats all fine and dandy in theory but the vast majority just wont be pleased with their characters, sure they will try to overlook it but its not like they are satisfied.

I dunno if that is accurate

this is a game where screenshots are a huge part of the game and from what I've seen it mostly seems to be people that are attached to their characters and have positive views of them.

We go through everything in the game with our pirates. All those massive amounts of hours and battles and survival. Together for the loss and together for the victories.

Doesn't seem too difficult for people to grow attached to their character with all that history.

There is no doubt that there is a desire by some to have more options when selecting but imo the current design seems to lead to results that line up with the intent in a mostly positive way.

  • @wolfmanbush Just because someone accepted it does not mean he is also happy about it, shouldnt you get attached to the look of your character as well?

In a game around cosmetics being the main goal its really not working, and filters will still gives you ogres to look at, but ogres that would be more relevant to you.
So how does that hurts your vision on this?

Do you know how many I have had over my 15+ years on Xbox Live?

    ONE

I take pride in having all of my history and achievements under 1 umbrella - like my pirate, it's unique, and not an afterthought. I don't pay extra, abuse matchmaking, split up content, etc. It is a part of my identity.

I will never understand why some pirates choose to masquerade as other people. Isn't 1 life hard enough to live?

99% know what we are? Even if that percentage were correct, I'm almost certain that number is decreasing more and more as time goes on...

  • @galactic-geek No. Its really not.
