Lightning in a Bottle (eel bomb)

  • Now that we've had plenty of time to battle the various ocean crawlers, I thought one of their abilities could make for a nifty throwable (well two, but the second would just be a venomball version of the firebomb and kinda redundant 😛).

So far we have Fire Bombs which spread damage over time, and Blunder Bombs which cause high knockback from point of impact, so I thought it would be neat to have Lightning in a Bottle (or Bottled Lightning, Storm Ball, Eel Bomb, etc. – depends on how character limits and UX tie to item naming) which would function like a throwable version of the Eel-ectric shield stun.

On impact (either thrown or cannoned) it would chain from the impact area (based on target proximities) and cause a momentary ‘lockdown’ stun. It could provide the action-cancel effect of blunderbombs, but pin targets instead of knocking them away so could be used to combo antipersonnel effects. It would be similarly effective against ocean crawlers to blunderbombs (i.e. shield break or stun), but extra effective against gold skeletons (due to obvious conductivity), and provide a way to hit a line of them compared to trying to cluster them for fire or blunder bombing. I would also expect the chain distance and damage to be increased towards pirates with swords out, since we all know how much lightning likes swords! Bottled Lightning should probably also be a bit rarer compared to Fire/Blunder Bombs for balancing (though would still be included with them in the inventory limit of 5 throwables).

  • Personally I’d prefer this to be an enchanted weapon like the Trident that has limited charges before it disintegrates.

  • @sirdannythemad a great idea and could work, but it could also be used by the trolls and toxic aspect of the community to stun lock pirates and make things even harder for those less PVP minded.

If it was extremely rare and it took a lot of time to aquire them, then sure. But they need to be less available.

  • Sloop crews or crews below deck are 🤬.

  • Remember how brief the stun is from the eel shield is as well - compared to the interrupt function, a stunlock would theoretically require multiple players throwing in sequence. The intended use would be more to throw one right before hitting someone with something else (cannon/rifle) with the aim of a quick distance kill, since as a one-off the blunderbomb would still be dominant for disrupting repairs.

Maybe for rarity it should be to fire/blunder bombs like curse balls are to regular cannon balls (which are similarly engineered to combo with other ordnance since they don't deal direct damage), and likewise not usually appearing in stacks greater than one.

  • @sirdannythemad I love this. Yes please. Having an actual eel inside might be a little sad. Looking like a sad science experience.

Though, if the eel, is snapping at us in the glass jar, it might be fun.
