Easier Climbing and Ledge Grabbing

  • Please make it easier to climb ladders and platforms, by requiring just a short TAP of the Use button, not a hold when close enough to start a climb and make grab detection much much more generous... Avoid constant bouncing off edges and almost-jumps: I frequently press F to grab when a ladder prompt is visible and still fall in the water more often than not, super annoying.

Same with just missing the edge of a platform on a jump. This could be a LOT more generous, nudging you onto it if you were close enough and aiming towards it. There's just never really a situation where it feels good to fall into the water or a pit when it looked like you should have easily made that jump and you were literally at the platform edge.

Also, when jumping onto the top of a ladder the weird delay you get where you sort of slide down and then start climbing feels bad... would greatly prefer if you were nudged directly onto the platform when you jump to the top of a ladder (unless you're actively pressing down).

  • Or maybe, if you must, require that the player tap the F Use button to grab onto the edges of platforms on a just-missed jump much like you would for a ladder, but make it a snappy and smooth move that is almost as good as fully making the jump.

  • You don't have to hold to grab a ladder. You can just tap Grab. Sometimes however, when the boat is going very fast or lot is going on, it is best to spam the grab button.

Honestly, I would like to see them address ladder juking.

  • Whatever the exact required input is about half the time grabbing a ladder fails when it should not, ie when you clearly pressed the button in time while easily within grabbing range. The window within which you can grab hold of a ladder in a jump, even just one that is stationary, is much MUCH too narrow.

And the same goes for missed jumps onto platforms as I have explained above.

I don't know what "ladder juking" is, but if you mean it should be harder to get onto ladders then NO, absolutely not. The opposite of that.

  • @ninjadodo7203 Yes it should be harder for them to ladder juke. I do not feel it is hard to grab ladders unless you have a ping issue.

  • It very much DEFINITELY is too hard to grab ladders when like 5/10 jumps from ship to pier miss a ladder despite spamming the use button while clearly facing and touching said ladder. I cannot count the number of times I've seen the ladder climb prompt flash by while pressing the use button to climb and I still fell instead of climbing. This is BAD and the game would be greatly improved if this was fixed.

If you knew anything about platform game design you would know these kinds of input windows (in a game that aims for good-feeling movement mechanics) should be as generous as possible. Currently this specific part of the game feels terrible.

  • @ninjadodo7203 I have to agree with @personalc0ffee on this one - I have never had an issue grabbing a ladder. That includes in vaults, when parkour running, or trying to board a ship.

That doesn't mean you don't have an issue that you have experienced I might add, but I just wonder if it's the game that's the blame? It could be like Coffee says a ping issue.

I certainly wouldn't want there to be a larger grace on the grab, as it makes the boarding process even easier!

  • @sshteeve Though we disagree on this point thanks for at least acknowledging my experience of the problem instead of telling me I'm just playing wrong and the game is perfect as it is (which is what I mostly seem to be getting on this forum, instead of actual responses to suggestions).

Regarding making boarding too easy, a possible solution would be to only make the grabbing window more generous on stationary ladders. That way it would leave the difficulty of boarding a moving ship unchanged but would make climbing onto piers and the like considerably more straightforward.

I think that could be a good compromise.

  • @ninjadodo7203 I'd take that compromise matey!

  • It's a delicate balance for sure. If you've ever had some loot "close" to the harpoon or on a rowboat prior to the change they made, you'll know that you definitely don't want the interaction radius to be too sensitive because you'll be grabbing the wrong thing at the wrong time.

I will say the grabbing the top of the ladder mechanic is and always has been silly. At this point I just find it to be a funny quirk of the game. But, if they addressed it, I wouldn't be mad.

Curious...do you play on a high ping? I know that sometimes when I've got high ping, I have to be way more deliberate with my interactions and it sometimes makes barrels, ladders, and the like a little frustrating.

  • It is absolutely a delicate balance, ain't no doubt about that.

  • @sweetsandman I don't know about any specific ping numbers but my internet connection is not especially great - it varies - so it's certainly possible drops in connection speed make this problem worse.

I'm definitely not advocating changing the interaction distance for ALL objects (that would create an avalanche of bugs and bad unintended interactions)... just for this specific situation, making it easier to grab hold of (non-moving) ladders and edges of platforms when it seems like you were easily close enough to make that jump or grab that ladder.

Similar to "coyote-time" in platformers that lets you jump for a brief moment while you were technically already in the air, but still close enough that it looked like you should have been able to jump, essentially fudging a grace period for reaction time, giving the player a more generous window for things like this feels right and makes for more enjoyable movement.

That will definitely make the issue worse for you. When I play with some of my aussie friends where my ping is standard 280, I miss ladders all the time and even get teleported around ship intractable, it's like this weird stutter.
