The Five Winds Region

  • (Credit for name and some details go to AShinyRay)

So I had an idea for a new region a few months ago. I thought of it as a rough concept and then forgot about it but then about month and half ago the SoT partner AShinyRay released a video briefly going over 5 new ideas for regions. One of those was based off of Maritime Southeast Asia, the very same concept I had come up with. Anyway I decided to go more in depth about this idea so here it is.

The region of the five winds is located West of the Shores of Plenty now that the area there is open since A Pirates Life. It has 21 islands, 10 Large, 6 small, 1 fort, 1 seapost, 1 outpost, and 2 uncharted islands. On the map the islands for the rough outline of a dragon head. The islands are closer tighter than those of the other regions and it contains some of the biggest islands in the game.

The lone outpost is located at the very center of the region making up the eye of the dragon outline. It’s name is The Jade Dragon Outpost. Jade Dragon is actually 6 semicircular sand banks that form 3 rings with a river flowing through the middle. The river is wide enough to fit all ship types and in the very center of the outpost Is water hole, the hole of big enough to fit every ship type. There is a shallow reef around the island to encourage anchoring inside the water hole using the river as access. Sticking out of the central water hole is a small dock with the ship right and merchant stalls. A small bridge connects the inner most and the middle sand banks. On the middle bank is all of the shops as well as the other factions and the tavern. The outermost sand bank is completely covered in trees and other vegetation to obscure your ship from the view of outsiders.

The islands will covered in tho climate vegetation and contain many East Asian style Temples and Shrines. Several of the large islands would have rivers big enough for rowboats flowing through them. You may occasionally come across emergent skeletons in the region that fight with bamboo sticks. There will be 4 new fruits that are about as rare as cursed cannonballs and only spawn in the Five Winds.
-Mangosteen which gives 40% health back
    -Guava which gives 50% back
    -Rambutan which gives 75% back
-Dragon Fruit which gives 100% back but is NOT split into two halves like the pineapple

There is new weapon type that can only spawn in the Five Winds, the bamboo staff, which is several feet long and can be used to hit enemies and deal a decent amount of damage bit will eventually splinter and break after too much use, much like the Trident of Dark Tides.

There will be serval new treasures that spawn in the region.
Gold hoarders treasures include (but are not limited too) Warriors Chest, a chest made of silver and engraved with Jade and covered in red and gold designs, base value 2000, somewhat rare spawn. The Jade ticket a cop made completely from Jade and engraved with dragon designs, base value 500.
The order of souls will get a new bounty skull type from a rare type of Skelton captain that spawns in the region. The skull is called the warriors skull and will be red and gold, base value 1,500.
The Merchants get a new item as well, exquisite pepper, base value 950. They also get a new commodity for the trade routes: rough Jade.

A new type of voyage will be offered by the gold hoarders and OoS ONLY at Jade Dragon outpost.
OoS: you must journey to a shrine where you will find one of those new Skelton captain I referred to earlier. First though you must light two lanterns with the Purple and Green Flames of Fate which can picked up with two nearby dead skeletons. After lighting them the new Skelton captain will awaken and you must defeat them. Then you will have to battle a new Mysterious enemy that dresses and moves like a samari. Once defeated it will drop serval skulls and bags of money and triplets and things.

The Gold Hoarder Quest will have you follow a trail of gold on an island where you eventually end up at a Temple filled with riches. You have 5 minutes to get as much out as possible like the vaults, however I have a bit more time because there will traps inside the Temple that can temporarily hold you or even kill you.

The region will also new cosmetics, NPC, and wish types.

I hope you enjoyed and feedback is welcome!

  • I think this is a great concept (and even if you don’t like it it’s at least a nice change of pace from the ice biome talk), and you’ve clearly poured a lot of thought into it. That being said, I think before something like this could be added Rare would have to do some tinkering with how the map looks. First of all, server space would have to be increase as only 6 ships person server with 5 distinct regions is not good. Second, it would make running Reapers in this region pretty unviable, as Reapers would have to sail all the way back to reapers hideout. Also, world events like Flameheart would interfere, as his ships could fire on your ship even if he is an island over just because the islands are close together. Overall, however, I think this is a decent idea

  • I’d like to see a new region like this. I’ve seen others suggesting similar regions. They’d need to add more ships to the server if they spread out the map as far as what you described. More regions would be cool. We have the Caribbean, Aegean Sea, and what looks to be the north coast around Scotland. I think your idea would be a nice change.

  • Yes just because I know it'll look beautiful as the sun rises and sets and under that purdy night sky

  • @drdeath60 that’s absolutely true, thanks!

  • Definitely a refreshing take on a new region (away from constant clamor for an Ice-themed biome as the "opposite" of the Devil's Roar). Personally, I would avoid expanding the map any more, because I've noticed a few people talking about how "empty" the map feels, and I'm 80% certain Rare has said they were no longer interested in further extending it outward.

Something that could be done, alternatively, is to make the Sea of Five Winds another pocket within the Devils' Shroud composed of its own subset of regions - still part of the Sea of Thieves, but only accessible from the "main" four regions through use of the new Portals now scattered about the Sea of Thieves. New groups of regions could become new servers, which players can load into when they begin or travel to.

If we're going to have a large Southeast Asia or similar themed subset of servers, I'd love to have one of the regions be inspired by the Ha-Long Bay.

  • Another region would also mean adding another ship. Can the servers handle it?

If so that would be great and with more regions would come increased ability to spawn sunk ships further away. Once released people will spend a lot of time for the first few months there.

We don’t need “The Five Winds Region”

The Devils Roar added volcanos and the “Pirates Life” added the Sea of the Dammed and even an underwater city (The sunken kingdom tall tale) so I suggest that Rare should expand on that.

We were given a ghostly city in the first “Pirates Life” tall tale so why not expand on that? There is an archway at each outpost except Morrows Peak outpost for some reason. This gives us 6 unique cities which could be based on the outpost styles and even the different shipwrecks in the area. You can even make a side quest with the Blackwiche in the wilds version of the city.

People may not the idea of hiding in the Sea of the Dammed so keep the ships on the servers. Once a crew enters, keep the portal open so other crews may enter or at least know there is a crew in the Sea of the Dammed. This keeps the PvP element and gives us a unique ghostly area

  • @coffeelight5545 I know we don’t need it and I don’t even want it right now because it makes no sense for something like this to added right now and I think they should expand on the Sunken Kingdom, it’s just a totally fun idea I came up with

  • @xreveillex

Honestly, I would prefer that Rare expands on the Sea of the Dammed. I have heard so many people asking for the ability to visit the Sea of the Dammed and to expand on the Ferryman’s domain. This was before the release of the Tall Tales.

I suppose that your idea isn’t a bad one
