Outposts Should SHUT UP SHOP At Night!

  • Yeah, that whole "drive-by, jump off and sell" tactic as your persued gets thrown out as an option every night.
You think lone wolves like getting nerfed like that in a shared world already stacked against them?
I really need to allow this galleon of sailors to chase me all night?
Even if I sink or lose them, I have to kill time as the shopkeeper only receives stolen goods at normal business hours?
My pirate does not consort with Reapers.

Bad idea all around, as I wait for daylight full of loot and unable to unload at will, I get disconnected.

Shadow skellies and Karen moaning at 3am, sure much room for more night feels. Why not just let the PvE spawn rate rage at night?

But closing the vendors at night smacks of social normalcy in a place not quite normal.
If the Merchant Alliance can make profit at 3am, why wouldn't they?
The Order only takes skulls during daylight hours? What are they doing at night now?
Gold Hoarders close the tent at night to sleep and dream about gold, refusing chest and trinkets?
Let us not forget Merrick's folks, who no longer will take your nocturnal fish at night.

Defies even pirate logic. Unless you play Reapers Bones.
Perhaps this is the OP's actual intent.

@joe-krakatoa you can only buy a certain number of supplies before having to wait a few days.

You can only buy so many voyages from a vendor in 1 day before having to wait.

Waiting as a mechanic exists already and noone complains EVER about these because they have adapted and learnt to work around it.

None of these mechanics effect my current gameplay, pirates only receiving stolen booty during regular business hours does effect my gameplay in a negative way.
Your not adding an extra layer of immersion or complexity. Your choking the gameplay loop and forcing a delay in the game.

Much of SoT is about mitigating negative impacts of RNG, waiting unnecessarily is simply unfun.

  • @paparug420 other perfect examples of small things that change everything:

    Gunpowder Skeletons
    Gunpowder getting a Fuse
    Mermaid Statues
    Rowboats
    Harpoons
    Harpoon Rowboats
    Collector's Chests
    Ammo Chests
    Fire
    Revive
    Purchasing Supplies

And much more. I like your idea. It'd be an adjustment and many would hate it, but many had differing opinions on a lot of the things I listed, and overall improve and add to the game.

  • @paparug420 it's a game...

  • As immersive as it would be, it would be fun for about the first 5 minutes

  • @klutchxking518 definitely. You can take all these ideas and hate and dismiss them easily!

Yes it would be an adjustment, but it would also add an extra layer of complexity on top of what we have!

  • Here with a different angle: All the normal trading companies stay open like they currently do, but during the daytime, there's a second Gold Hoarder at a random spot on the outpost who doesn't offer voyages or promotions, but will pay more for any loot of the appropriate type (today it's chests, tomorrow it's trinkets, etc).

Then during nighttime, the special GH rep leaves and now there's a special OOS rep, and she will pay you double for gems tonight, skulls tomorrow night, etc).

Every other morning, there is a second Merchant representative, and she will hang out for one full day and one full night, following similar rules to the special vendors listed above

This is why not, in a nutshell.

@paparug420 You're seriously telling me Rathbone would allow Horace & co to turn away gold at ten past eight or whenever? Not a chance matey.. He'd have their guts for garters!

  • @paparug420 said in Outposts Should SHUT UP SHOP At Night!:

@cotu42 well yes this would punish crews who don't use their pocket watch to plan voyages.

Much the way dropping the anchor at dumb times, or sailing with sails not 100% down or angled, or not using your compass.

I think of it as just another mechanic that good players will take advantage of (timing their journeys/steals) and poor players will be caught out from.

Nothing is going to happen to my haul, I am just told to pause mid way selling because it is physically impossible for me to sell things. I have spent over 30 mins even just a hour just selling on solo adventures, without any resistance. There is no reason for the game to dictate, please hold.. ooh you have to leave, well tough luck I simply do not accept it now please wait. Nor can I plan everything in my life around the ingame time frame.

The mechanic you propose only prevents one from playing the game for literally no real reason.

You say it is something people that are good will use to steal, yet if I am selling for 40 mins and nobody shows up... who the hell is going to all of a sudden now decide to show up while I spent all day selling and have just some last things left? Literally anyone that is good at pirating does not sit still and sell if pirates are coming for them. Hell as it is now, while I am selling you come at me... I don't sit there and continue, I pause and stop selling. I make a decision, prepare for battle or simply sail off and do drive by sells and you do not even need to stop the vendors from accepting my treasure for it. Anyone that is worth their salt deals first with the opponents after which they worry about the treasure.

Game mechanics that just pause the agency of players especially for the time frames you are suggesting is bad. If I drop my anchor it takes me 30 seconds to fix that, if my sails are not optimal it takes me 10 seconds to fix that, if my don't use my compass... I better know the map or you are heading into a different adventure.

None of your arguments are actually solid and rely on some edge case where in practice it is more a nuance than a benefit.

  • people actually need to use their watch to know how soon it is to night time? there is this big bright orb in the sky that rises and sets in the same directions and at the same times each day. Knowing how long it is until night time isn't something I'd use the pocket watch for. Now how long until dawn, that is harder to ascertain, though there is a little brightening before sunrise.

  • I know it would make things more difficult for people, but nevertheless this idea sounds super cool!
If they added a new island somewhere, where you can sell loot only at night time. It also would get crowded at night ;)
This could work as an event for sure!

  • This is a really cool idea.

  • @prescafatty thanks! As someone stated earlier, the initial prototype had this feature.

Sea of Thieves is quite a hardcore game in terms of ALL of its mechanics, and this would undoubtedly add to the overall feel that if you want to succeed upon the seas you NEED to be attentive, cautious, and planning your journey.

  • I would rather see time specific enemies. Not like shadow skellies, but something that only shows up at night. I think the phantoms would have been a good candidate with the sea creatures taking over during the day. I would love to see something like the drowned sea monsters ala Ted Danson's character in the movie Creepshow. What I wouldn't want is to lose my loot because I need to log off, but the in game clock says I am locked out for the next fifteen minutes.

  • Realistically an entire island would be awake and at their posts when a pirate ship arrives in port. Both to sell and to guard their stuff.

So really there is nothing wrong with them being up all night when you are there.
The whole gaming mechanic of a village going to sleep while an adventurer wearing diamond armour is in town has never been realistic, a rich traveller in a poor village is the event of the year.

Saying it is outside business hours and the shop is closed is a luxury of modern rich societys.

  • @paparug420

Would the Reapers have to go to bed early too?

  • Hard pass for me, the game is already enough of a drain on my time. That's without having to worry about Horace the Hoarder being in bed drinking hot cocoa when I show up to turn in.

It's like Stephen Hawking is in the room with your level of scientific knowledge on show!

@galactic-geek cook time for food! So obvious, so simple, why have I never thought of doing this?! I keep waiting for the sizzle to die down then I pop down and check it, this is weirdly game changing in a very minor way.

hahah same! I just stare at food real hard and look for the color change. The pocket watch method is BRILLIANT! Lol

  • @nitroxien
Imagining the game being more... immersive. Engaging. And the players aren't the only characters that move, breathe and live their world.

Yeeeep, it should be that way. But, it ain't yet.

  • @augspacussh
That's actually a really cool thought. - Outposts would never operate the same as you look for the "secret" traders.
    "Heya Grimm, whatcha buyin' today!?"

  • Oh and while we're at it, can we PLEASE stop having the SFX cue for approaching the vendors with our loot occur every single time!? I KNOW WHERE I AM DEPOSITING! PLEASE STOP.

First time, sure. Fine. I am okay with this. Please stop doing it for the next 25 minutes of my loot deposit for every single approach!

  • OP should play by their own rules and leave the rest of us alone...
