A New Boss - Moby Dck

  • It's been a while since a huge boss was added, so I think it's time for another one. Out of all the sea creatures, whether they originate from myths or stories, I think Moby Dck would be the best choice. For those who are reading that don't know what Moby Dck is, it's basically a massive sperm whale that attacks sailors in the story in which it originated from with the same name. Knowing that you could encounter this along with the Kraken and the Megalodon would be exiting. Overall, I think it's time for a new boss, and Moby Dck is definitely the best choice.

It wouldn't allow me to type the actual word, but I assume that the moderators will know what I mean.

    This is Moby Dck:

  • I'm always down for more sea life but the shrouded ghost already kinda fills the roll. I mean it's not different from any other meg but you know, it's big, white, and people think it's a myth.

  • During the Hungering Deep expansion, one thing Ol' Merrick mentioned was losing his eye to a giant bird. I instantly wanted to see that in-game, and I still do. Very much so. Even more than another sea monster (though I'm always down for more giant monsters, regardless).

  • @augspacussh We already have the Great Eagle in the sky - but careful with ol' Merrick - he's a spinster of tales, that 1...

  • @galactic-geek The tall tale reference and various island art combined with Merrick's tale simply means we have multiple sources all confirming that Bigbird is out there.

I just want it to be less 'in the sky' and more 'in the world'.

Corrupt it, Flameheart it, just make it angry for some lore reason. I want to fight it!

  • @augspacussh as cool as that would be fighting an air based enemy especially with a ship’s cannons would be difficult

Nah... Just harpoon it to bring it down low. 😉

  • We already have the Megalodon as our "Moby" type of enemy; how exactly would it behave differently from Megan? On top of that, there's the whole can of worms that is the ethics of whaling; you would need to make a boss monster like Moby very noticeably unnatural and monstrous to justify having us kill a whale.

I would rather we get something that all Pirates would easily and immediately identify, and which always appears at the edges of maps to signify the unknown: a giant serpent.

Sea Serpents have been an integral part of nautical lore least as long as the Giant Squid/Kraken; they're an instantly recognizable symbol associated with sailing, adventure, and danger on the high seas. Moby is a much, much later addition to the roster of iconic sea beasts, and since Sea of Thieves seems to depend as much on actual pirate lore as it does on the romantic pop-culture view of them, I'd say a Serpent would fit much better than a Whale.

Somthing being difficult would be great. The pve threats in the world are generally not too difficult after a player has gained some experience with the game, especially with the advent of the disney sticks. Somthing that is a challenge would be great.

  • @galactic-geek your mistake is relying on the harpoons 😂

Bring it on!!! Make it as tough as possible. Make it blot out the sun with its sheer size as you approach its current roost. I want a world event that doesn't need a glowing cloud, because you can simply see the bird from nearly everywhere in the world (at least while it's flying)!

  • @pogojoe2008 no thanks. It would just be another meg encounter.

  • @blam320 so it's ok to kill sharks but not whales? Interesting?

  • @qu1etone The destructive impact of whaling industry is a pretty sensitive subject. Not to mention whales are highly intelligent, emotional mammals, versus sharks which are dumb fish. I could be wrong on this but I also don't think shark populations were ever practically driven to extinction due to over fishing them.

  • In regards to the OP. Including Moby Dck specifically is a little dicey, killing whales aside, it was based off a real whale attacking and sinking a real vessel resulting in the few survivors resorting to cannibalism. Some of the crew's descendants still live on Nantucket today. So some people may see it as inappropriate.

@blam320 so it's ok to kill sharks but not whales? Interesting?

Because whales are extremely intelligent and normally peaceful creatures, while the sharks in-game are extremely aggressive, to the point where it's just standard practice to kill them before you're eaten?

  • @blam320 everything is aggressive in sea of thieves by the way. And a lack of intelligence is no reason for murder. If that was the case the watchers of soaps and bad reality tv should be culled immediately! 🤣🤣🤣

  • I have never understood that argument when people say : No whales in this game because of whaling, when we have the shark that we can kill. I have no problems with the killing in-game because I understand it's just a video game.

But as a scuba diver in RL I have to say sharks are not extremely aggressive. With most of them you can dive along. (don't do this with the great white :P ) They are very importent to the eco-system, majestic and beautiful.

Also sharks are endangered and declining worldwide. Reasons are over-fishing, shark finning (which is super cruel) and the destruction of coral Reefs. If you are interested please take your time and look around the web for this topic.

P.s: Have you ever seen Orcas hunting Penguins? They are pretty bada$$ compared to sharks. Smart but also bada$$ ;)

  • @theornerybear thats a pretty negative view of sharks. Maybe you should do some research. Many species of shark are also endangered. And are not mindless killing machines. Your perception of sharks IRL is a little saddening. Save our oceans and all who live them. ✌peace

  • @qu1etone I understand there are endangered species of sharks, I was just saying that I don't think they were fished to such an extreme (and as I said, I could be wrong) for food as whales were hunted for blubber. It's not a negative view of sharks, and I did not claim they are mindless killing machines as many are not aggressive, just that compared to whales they are unintelligent fish. I'm not sure why my perception of sharks is saddening, I'm not advocating for the mindless hunting of anything in our oceans. You're just making assumptions and looking to belittle someone instead of just having a conversation.

  • @theornerybear you seemed to be totally disregarding the shark and condemning it to extinction. I believe they should be treated with the same respect as whales.
But we are ok my friend, no bad feelings here. Respect to you and yours. Happy sailing. 💛

  • @qu1etone nope just trying to point out why whales might be a more sensitive topic versus sharks. CHEERS Happy sailing.

  • @qu1etone Your reasoning is utterly irrational. We kill sharks in-game out of self-defense, because otherwise we will be eaten. Sharks in-game are like Tiger Sharks or Bull Sharks IRL, who are extremely aggressive. In fact, everything on the Sea of Thieves we kill is out of self-defense. You say lack of intelligence isn't justification for murder; I don't think you know what the word even means.

  • @blam320 oh dear. 😢😢😢

  • No need for Moby when we have a much cooler and more dangerous whale called the Shrouded ghost! That many don’t believe it’s real.

  • @pogojoe2008 Dude - - that'd be so awesome :D

  • @lordplinde
UGH, I know right!? Sharks are vilified and the ones who are peaceful and have still taken humans lives aren't even in the game as an invulnerable asset to enliven the seas.
Dolphins, for example, have killed people too. Someone trying to make the situation "a matter of ethics for not including this creature" is overly concerned with how people deduce the actual hunting in real life. (which, yes, it's a bad thing to overhunt any creature; except mosquitos)

Why not include more variety? Why not? siiigh Some people just don't get it.

In the sea, you are food to be eaten. And that's the plain and simple...

  • I see that this post is becoming more and more popular by the moment, so I'm here to answer some questions. Some of you are saying it'd be another Megalodon. I think otherwise. I believe it could be assigned with much different attack moves than the Megalodon. And also, I don't think it would be reasonable to add a different boss such as the Leviathan or the Cthulhu. These gargantuan bosses would simply destroy your ship. Even if then decreased their actual powers by a lot, these other potential bosses would still be very overwhelming and nearly impossible to defeat.

To wrap it up, here are a few reasons why Moby Dck should be implemented into the game as a third "sea-dwelling boss", rather than anything else:

    1. There are only 2 other "sea-dwelling" creatures, the Megalodon and the Kraken, so I think it's definitely time for another.

    2. Any other choice such as the Leviathan or the Cthulhu would be physically too much to comprehend when fought, by many players. This would leave them helpless and it would also draw attention from other players on the other side of the map, because of the massive hulking beast standing upright in the ocean.

    3. Moby Dck could be implemented into the game in another huge update in the future. This update would not only include Moby Dck, but possibly something like a map expansion, or more islands.

    4. I'm sure the developers could figure out unique attack moves that do not resemble the Megalodon's attack moves at all, so you don't have to worry about this being another Megalodon. It would be a completely new experience.
