Still (only) 20 Million Players to date?

  • I'm not sure if Rare's just slow on updating the Sea of Thieves website but I really hope the game isn't still at 20 million players to date....that's the number it was saying way before the whole PoTC update... You gotta think it's at least 21 million at this point (if not higher), right?

  • That number doesn't update automatically, just when Rare announces new numbers.

  • Here are the Stats from merfolkslullaby. Close to 25 million

    Edit: copys sold. Not Players

  • its not as if that number of people have actually sailed. The numbers are terribly inflated by false 'numbers'. There are stats available that show over 2/3 of that 'count' have never sailed the seas for more than a few minutes. So sure 20 million people have ever logged in, but when Rares public stats show ~70% of that 20 million have played less than an hour, not sure its a number to be bragging about. Monthly Active Users would be a better assessment of the actual size of the community. That is most likely under a million based on Rare's own stats.

  • @thagoochiestman 20 million people are not playing this game. That figure is the number of player accounts created. Definitely not playing.

  • @thagoochiestman

I personally know 3 other people who played the sea of thieves and gave up on it. My one friend got pirate legend just before the 1 year anniversary update and hasn’t played since. My brother gave up a few months after that. The 3rd person gave up after playing for a few months.

When I bought this game, I didn’t know there was an unregulated PvP element. I adjusted but many people don’t. They most likely quit because Rare refuses to give us PvE only servers with gold and reputation. This is the main reason why Server Alliance Discords are so popular. People don’t want to farm gold, they want a safe space. Many people don’t realize that if the alliance flag is removed entirely then the server alliances will continue as normal.

In conclusion, the 20 million players are all the pirate profiles that Rare has. They don’t represent active players. A good way to check is look at LFG posts on Rare’s official website on the game tab. During the peak hours, I see 300 or so LFG posts. The day of the Pirates Life update, I saw a record 500+ posts. Sadly, it only lasted for a day

I think the achievement stats doesn't include Steam players...just the MS version users and this numbers are probably so low, because SoT is part of the Gamepass...

Pretty much the same story here. Had a bunch of friends playing, after about a year they all quit cause they got tired of the pvp. So I play on Alliance servers. I have millions of gold and I'm max rep with everyone, I don't play with alliances to grind money.

  • It's quite common for people to play games for a few months or a year or so then give up. I've never played a game for anywhere near the time I've played this one.. Playerbase is consistently growing which means more people are joining and staying than leaving so nothing to see here, move along.. You'll never please everybody.

The game is almost always in the top 20 most played games on Xbox week after week for over 2 years now (as far back as those particular stats were tracked by a third party). It peaked at #6 just a few weeks ago after the POTC content drop, knocking down a lot of the big players in the game. And this does not even include the Steam players.

A lot of the early game achievement percentages are way off too, due to the fact that they turned them off right after launch for a few weeks due to issues with them and people were using free Game Pass memberships to try it out. If those never logged back in, then those achievements remained locked for them. Some will unlock automatically if they do decide to log in, others would have to be earned again. Granted this does not explain it all (and much of that should have diminished over time with the continued influx of players, unless there was a HUGE amount of players who did just that but I don't really see that), but it does account for why those early game achievements are skewed much lower than you'd expect.

Most games cycle for me. I play a game for a few months and then I simply move on to the next game. The fact that Sea of Thieves is adding new content keeps me interested. I just started playing Minecraft again after the first half of the Caves and Cliffs update.

The lack of a storyline doesn’t help the game but the tall tales offer a little bit of a story. It’s too bad so many people see them as a chore instead of a fun story.

  • @coffeelight5545

The fact that almost every session is a genuine adventure does it for me, it's the only game I watch on twitch too.. more like watching a good film sometimes, deceptively clever sandbox..

  • @coffeelight5545

achievement stats are percents, so those percents should be applicable across all populations unless there is reason they should be different.

If you want raw numbers, look at Rares own published data, not the achievement stats, to see the estimated AMUs is less than one million.

  • Sea of Thieves was the #1 best-seller on Steam for basically all of the recent Steam Summer Sale. Considering the size of the Steam platform, that's huge.

SteamCharts data only pertains to Steam players, but indicates that the game is currently as popular as its ever been on that platform. Average players are over 29k, and peak players are over 62k.

Microsoft and Xbox don't release comparable numbers, so it's hard to say exactly how they compare to Steam, but it's reasonable to assume there's been a similar spike in interest thanks to the PotC content release.

"Live Service" games like these always have fluctuations in player count, as people come back to the game for new content drops, then play through them, and take a break till the next drop. That's nothing new or unusual.

Overall, however, it seems like Sea of Thieves popularity is as strong now as it's ever been, and growing. There's more to do now than ever before, and more to keep people playing. The specific way that PVPVE is implemented is unique and distinctive in the marketplace, precisely because there is not a pure PVE mode. That is, in fact, one of SoT's big selling points, and the continued and growing success of the game suggest that players do, in fact, enjoy it.

  • @necronikolai13 That's the way it goes if you sail long enough. 80%+ of crews will cease to exist as the majority of people get bored of the seas. I had a crew that disintegrated in the same way. Still playing solo sloop, arena or L4Gs.
