Sea of Thieves is being ruined

  • I have read all over the internet the constant argument about PvP in sea of thieves. This is my rant about it from my experiences. I apologize if this is in the wrong place but I have never posted like this and I likely never will again, SoT is the special acceptation.

A friend gifted me the game recently and I dove into the sea of thieves not really knowing what to expect, I played the tutorial and even found the secret treasure and joined the multiplayer world, shortly after returning to another outpost, I tried to look at the different shops, however when I left the building I was gunned down by 4 players standing on the beach. At first I was extremely upset but when I read online that its possible they were selling loot, I held no hard feelings, however this PvP experience seemed to of set the tole for my game because no matter what session I am in, I get killed by 1, 2, 3 or 4 man squads (yes, I have been killed by all four group sizes in the space of a few days) who were not looting, were not selling or even doing a quest, they were purely looking to kill anything and anyone they could find. On the few occasions I used chat and voice chat to try stop them I was greeted with the age old "the game is not called "Sea of Love" or "Sea of Friends"." Last time I checked a thief is not someone who destroys ships and kills players "just because". Now from my experiences I have also come across many nice players, some who are veterans who taught me the ropes and others new players like myself, I was fortunate enough to form alliances with these crews and had more fun then I can describe, looting forts and sailing together as a fleet was awesome and a lot of laughs where had.

That said I also understand why the game has PvP, yes pirates do steal from each other, they back stab and all sorts and I agree it should be in the game. But last time I checked, random pirates did not risk their supplies and ships to "have a little fun", they did it purely for gain, if there was no reward, a real pirate would not of even lifted a finger, yet in this so called "realistic" pirate experience, I have not encountered a single thief, not one person has snuck aboard to steal my loot, when I have had loot I have almost always handed it in, its when I have no loot and even after they see I have no loot that I get gunned down by someone who wants to feel big in a digital game. There is an arena that never gets used because players get away with it on the servers, and the reapers faction was a way for the game devs to give the griefers the reward for their aimless destruction. That said I have no issue with the reapers faction I just feel the way they reward this is stupid when even without that players still aimlessly kill for no reason.

I called this post "sea of thieves is being ruined" because that is what is happening, I have watched videos and read pages about the game spanning back to its release and I have seen how Rare has made it a point that they will never fix this issue. This game is probably the most beautiful game I have ever played and I know that no game will ever capture the sailing like this one, but this stunning pirate adventure game is becoming a battle royal game for kids who got bored of fortnite and apex legends.

I am writing this because I know that the players who actually care about the game say the same things I have here, the people who participated in the beta got turned away because of these idiots who only want to PvP, I read a story about how one galleon formed an alliance with a solo slooth to help them and after the raid, after all the loot was sold he tried to attack them. As a 4v1 its obvious he did not stand a chance but that just shows the mentality of the players being allowed into the sea of thieves.

It might not happen this month, this year, next year or the year after. But mark my words, the way this is going, all the players who love the game for the game itself will be chased off the game by all these jerks who only want PvP and nothing else.

Honestly I could go on and on after only playing for a few games and to me, that shows how much of a problem this is, I will post this and hope that by some miracle something gets done to save this game because as I said, it is a beautiful game and I honestly want to play this with my kids one day but at this rate the game with change into just another battle royal game.

  • @tmandelport you're correct on the fact that "thieves" dont go around killing people but I am under the impression that pirates might?

On a side not I am awfully sorry you encountered pirates while playing a pirate game. I also get mad when a zombie kills me when I play zombies on COD.

I'm done being condescending: on a real note you should just stick to the Devil's roar, dont leave your lanterns on ever, scuttle your ship before going to the shops, sail on the outer rim of the map, watch the horizon for other ships, sell every time you get loot immediately, angle your sails, dont put up the alliance flag, don't run Emissary flags, check for reapers. That pretty much sums up how to avoid PvP. But as this is a shared world experience, taking away a PvPers rights so you can enjoy the game in a way you want to specifically is selfish. There are tons of ways to avoid PvP and if you dont like it maybe just go fishing on the Maiden Voyage and stay there?

It's really not. Some of us have been here since the game launched, others have been here even longer testing the alpha and beta. Anyone who has watched this game grow can tell you confidently that nothing is being "ruined."

Sea of Thieves has stood its ground as being one of the most unique, fun, and interesting multiplayer experiences in existence despite staunch criticism from those who believe Rare's approach to the Shared World is too unconventional. Rare knows they have something special that people love, which is why they've vowed time and again not to compromise.

Sea of Thieves goes against the grain. No PvE servers, no safe modes - pure unadulterated shared world experiences. And that is what gives Sea of Thieves its unique identity. The game has never been represented as anything other than that. It is up to the consumer to get their expectations sorted out before they get into a game.

It might not happen this month, this year, next year or the year after. But mark my words, the way this is going, all the players who love the game for the game itself will be chased off the game by all these jerks who only want PvP and nothing else.

Yeah okay, 3 years of non-stop growth surpassing even Rare's own expectations, constant praises from Microsoft, and even Disney got in on it by lending Rare their own Jack Sparrow. Yeah sure seems like this game is headed down a dark, dark path into oblivion.

  • Oh boy,,, ... This is the game, part Zelda part CoD,,, you have to figure out "your" way to play. Thats the key.

  • I am writing this because I know that the players who actually care about the game say the same things I have here

You haven't even had this game for a week, lets stop pretending that you speak for the veterans. I myself have had a long history with this game, and all your post reads as is a person bitter after getting sunk.

A lot of your issues can be resolved by crewing up, plain and simple. Reading this entire thing already demonstrates to me that you have a problem with player attacks regardless of motives. There is also a grand misunderstanding of what Reapers actually rewards, considering it doesn't reward what you think it does. Also a fundamental lack of understanding what the Arena is, its a compacted version of SEa of Thieves, not an excuse to justify the removal of all violence in adventure.

You seem to be under this impression that sinking a player requires a loot to justify it, this is untrue. There exists many a reasons, a simple one is that they don't want you near them. That is all the justification they need. Sure, some will sink people for purely fighting reasons, but that is their prerogative. Might makes right in this game, just the harsh truth right there.

Game isn't being ruined, its just quite clear the ever present danger doesn't appeal to you. Your upset that players aren't playing by your own set of rules. You are trying to hold people to this image of a fantasy pirate that is in your head, ignoring that the limitations that held them back don't apply within a game environment. My style of playing hasn't changed since day 1, there are many just like me, there really isn't a wrong way to play this game, as long as it doesn't break TOS. Of which, nothing you suggested breaks it.

  • @tmandelport The game is not being ruined by PVP, at all, whatsoever. That's the best part. I get attacked all the time and I manage to hold my own, because I'm kwik on the food, throwables, repairs, etc.

I'm sorry that you're not enjoying the game, but ... honestly ... you just sound unreasonable and salty.

  • @tmandelport

May be time to stop reading about and watching the worst experiences in the game and actually play it more. You'll soon understand how to avoid stuff you would rather not do and get better at stuff you do want to do. You made it sound as if you had lots of experience whilst also being very new to the game. I suspect the latter is truer and we all had that baptism of fire, believe me!

Stick at it, look into sailing with a crew now and then to learn from and it becomes crystal clear as to exactly why it is so dearly loved.

  • @TmanDelport What secret treasure??

  • There was a post just like less than 12 hours ago. It doesn't matter how many people ask for it, pvp isn't changing!

This is where rare gave their thoughts about PvPvE
This is the podcast where they discussed PvP and PvE
This is the article Joe Neate wrote on custom servers
This is a thread on custom servers

  • @prescafatty sagte in Sea of Thieves is being ruined:

    @TmanDelport What secret treasure??

Probably the one under the trapdoor you have to open with the key, found in the pondy next to the shipwreck

  • @tmandelport you say it yourself, you also had also great experiences with other crews...so many different people coming together and nobody knows, which kind you meet today...yeah, there are some who have fun spawncamping you, scuttle or change server and go on

  • @matheson-kwik the game is being ruined by lazy pvpers. I cannot progress at all evertime I try to land at a harbour or large island I'm attacked and sunk. I haven't been able to hand in any emissary items for over 2 weeks because of this. For the third tome this week I've had to stop playing as I'm getting camped at the island i need for a tall tale. Why should play as an explorer just to be fodder some some pirate who's too lazy to try ship to ship combat and just wait around islands and harbours? And don't pretend that parts of the game cos it not it just the dev couldt be bothered build guards. I've been trying to crew up and trying to encourage others to play but at this stage I don't see the point. Why should I ask others to invest their time and money on some that just ends in disappointment over and over again. Without a passive mode this game will not grow its player base. Adding a piece mode does nothing but increase playability there no reason not to

  • @talesin

@matheson-kwik the game is being ruined by lazy pvpers. I cannot progress at all evertime I try to land at a harbour or large island I'm attacked and sunk.

Am I to assume by "Harbor" you mean an outpost, as in a place to cash out? If this is the case, move on to another outpost. If you seen an occupied island move on, also look for mermaids. Mermaids are the sure fire way to know if people are present, regardless of no ship, a mermaid will always be where players are. There is more outposts than ships, they can't camp every single one. Hell, most players are too busy doing their own thing so if there is camping, its only one ship guarding one of many outposts. Seems like a giant waste of time for such meager gains. You want to speak of lazy, but outpost campers are by far one of the easier things to avoid in this game. Its more of a "you" problem for falling for them.

Why should play as an explorer just to be fodder some some pirate who's too lazy to try ship to ship combat and just wait around islands and harbours?

The only reason you are fodder is because you refuse to adapt. If you keep falling for the same tactics, its quite clear that you refuse to adapt to the situation.

Without a passive mode this game will not grow its player base. Adding a piece mode does nothing but increase playability there no reason not to

Ridiculous, this game has been around for 3 plus years without a passive mode. The playerbase has in fact grown contrary to your claims. At this point, you just sound bitter. You will eventually learn and adapt, you just need to stick with it rather than get salty at the first sign of failure. There is no reason to introduce a passive mode when one of the core pillars of this game involves encouraged stealing.

  • So much of the toxic PvP people experience could be avoided if Rare simply have Arena the attention it deserves. As of now, the current state of Arena is terrible. If they added different game modes, specific land and sea modes, maybe even a Battle Royal with the Devil's Shroud could work. If they just gave Arena some love it would lower the amount of players who sink to sink in Adventure mode. But Arena is terrible, so these PvPrs migrate to Adventure. NOT ALL PVP IS TOXIC. very little actually is. But it's that little toxicity that ruins the game for so many.

  • I can tell you that the game isn't regularly like this. The game is currently getting an influx of new and old players due to the new update, promotions, and so on. Lately the seas have been a bit more rough, kind of like how when the game was first introduced. New players are almost always trigger happy, attacking on first sight of a ship, easy to take down once you learn the game. Recently I was finishing a tale when another player attacked me, I didn't see his ship but i did see his costume. Not sure if the tale was completed correctly so I proceeded to wipe out the entire server of all pirates single handedly, yes I lost my ship per encounter, but they also lost a lot of progress, treasure, and desire to continue to play. Regardless, it was my fault for being too friendly at the strt. Bunch of streamers and gamers that have heard about the game from the promotions are trigger happy bilge rats who most likely don't have the patience to continue playing this game for more than couple of days or weeks. Regardless, until the game slows pace a bit, just keep a weary eye out. I was friendly initially cuz I was on a tale but if I had loot on my boat and the event happened at an outpost, I might have considered blasting the whole outpost to kingdom come, trust is very brittle in this game, easily broken, best to keep it that way too.

  • Ahoy!

The team have recently given their thoughts on the topic of PvPvE and discussed it in our latest Podcast.

There is also a thread for Custom servers here.

Sea of Thieves will always be a shared world adventure game, with elements of both PvP and PvE but Joe did speak about Custom Servers about a year ago. These servers will not offer Gold or progression IF they become available to the public. Private Servers are still being tested with our Partners.

    Dropping anchor on this now.
