Toxic PvP

  • My wife and I started playing the game last year as our way of dating during the pandemic before we got married. We enjoy the adventure aspect of the game. Questing, fishing, tall tales, fighting skellies…..it’s great. The joy of finishing a quest just to have it all snatched from you and then laughed at…spawn camped and then told in messages that you suck and you’re a baddie and other such BS has gotten us to the point of not wanting to play the game.

The point of my post is this:
Can something be done to allow those who want to do the tall tales and such as that have their space and allow those who wish to just pvp their own space?

  • Any and all mechanics that could
Possibly exist to avoid this are already in game.

I’ve never encountered any of this...then again I wouldn’t expose myself to
Such vile filth. I just use XBOX Live LFG and Party Chat.

  • @glannigan ah yes the pvp aspect of the pirate game with "thieves" in the title is filthy

Not without ruining the game it can't. Sea of Thieves was designed for player interaction in a shared world and was never intended to be an experience where you only encounter like-minded players. This is the true niche of Sea of Thieves and to compromise on that would essentially strip the game of its identity.

Say they add this hypothetical safe space and make it optional to be in the PvP-enabled world. Then you split the mix of players up and distribute them into two predictable groups. The game is no longer fun or exciting for either group because they only encounter players that behave the same way as them.

But why listen to me ramble on about it when you can get the developer's thoughts on it here?

  • @chronodusk PREACH.
You can't add a PvP and PvE world without ruining the game.

  • The joy of finishing a quest just to have it all snatched from you and then laughed at…spawn camped and then told in messages that you suck and you’re a baddie and other such BS has gotten us to the point of not wanting to play the game.

Sorry as someone who has played since day one. These encounters are so very limited it makes me question if it even happened.

You have mute to hide text/messages and mic audio. As an adult I assume you are, you should know of these settings. It’s common among video games to have these settings.

For the loot being stolen. It’s a pirate game.

  • @aniysan hey now the PvP aspect is down right league of legends or overwatch toxic ok. I get sunk before I leave port I literally messaged them I just started and they responded with lol die scrub

  • @chronodusk so I just have to deal with toxic players that are only there to make the game less enjoyable for others. Come on. At least make it so servers have a low PvP rate or something cuz frankly I'm just playing to help and have fun but I can't do that cuz I get killed or sunk just because. Most of the players I encounter now are borderline psychotic and make every aspect of the game less enjoyable

  • @burnbacon no your missing the point. He's being ransacked for no reason other than his characters alive and his ship is untouched. Players are toxic. You telling me you haven't allied or spawned in just to have a level 5 reaper ship follow you around the whole map?

  • Well no, but you personally can mute all other voice chats and communications from other players ingame, and block them if they go on to DM or whatever.
Scuttle to avoid being spawncamped is an easy fix.

PvE/Private servers are pretty much confirmed not coming, as the devs want this player threat to remain true, but they're working on custom servers in which you cannot make progression in gold, commendations, or reputation, and it won't be free, but you will be alone.

  • @capt-t-bust3r

There would be no such thing as a "low" PvP Rate servers, it would never work. it's an open world and the beauty of this game is you NEVER know what is going to happen at any given time. You could be in a completely dead server for hours with not a boat in sight, and next thing you know it, there is 6 boats all fighting over for something.

You say you are just playing to have fun, but the other pirates who are doing the PvP are also playing to have fun. Yeah "sometimes" people wanna fight as you say "just because" and that's the way it goes, but how do those other players know if you don't have a bunch of loot on your boat until you are sunk???

I find that very hard to believe out of ALL the servers that this game has, you're calling MOST of the players you come across are borderline psychotic? Come on man.. lol

I been playing this game since Day 1, well over 3 Years now of some hardcore PvP Battles, and everyone wins and loses fights. If you find yourself having a bad Server, simply hit leave game, and set sail again, and you are in a brand new world. There is no possible way you are experiencing the same thing every single time you play this game on every single server during ever single player interaction.

He is not missing the point, according to the OP, he stated he was Questing, & Fishing. It's not Toxic for people to steal loot or fish or supplies from your boat and leave it untouched. If you are "ransacking" someone you are not doing it for no reason.

And what do you consider a Toxic Player?? Someone who sinks you and steals your loot and supplies??? No. That's playing the game.

You wanna know what Toxic is? Hate Speech, Racial Slurs, Griefing You. Someone who literally keeps bucketing your boat so it doesn't sink so you can get spawn camped over and over and won't let you sink for absolutely no reason. Yes, there are Toxic players in literally every single video game, but that's why they offer tools to eliminate some of that. Mute Voice Comms, Mute Text Chat, Scuttling Boat Option. You think I felt like listening to 20 something people in a lobby after a match on Call of Duty Modern Warfare on Xbox 360 ??? Heck No lol

And as far as a Grade 5 Reaper Boat following you around?? Well, I mean lol Yeah that's what their job is, they are there to sink boats and steal loot. Raise your sails, turn your boat around and fight them for their pricey grade 5 flag.

  • @catibri ahoy there matey!

This question is as old as the game itself and the answer has always been no - Arena was introduced to try and help the situation, then alliances and now I return after a year away and see we have decide to exclude specific game platforms and input styles from our seas.

The joy of the Sea of Thieves has and will always be not only the stories from the game itself (your Tall Tales you enjoy), but the stories that are made from the human interactions.

    Keep it PvPvE for me!

With regards to the final point of your OP - if you encounter such behaviour there are mechanics in place for this too - both on XBOX to report gamertags, as well as through the support pages here

    Define toxic though? :p

Is someone spawncamping you and harassing you over the mic? If so, that is toxic and the solution is to report them when possible. PvP itself is not the source of this problem so advocating for the developer to examine the PvPvE nature of the game is not the right answer...

If someone interrupted your voyage and stole your goods, that's not toxic. That is just Sea of Thieves. We've all been on the receiving end of this, and many of us are still here after 3 years still pirating and being pirated.

  • Toxic campers are losers in real life.
They are to be pitied. And loathed.

Do not worry - we often avenge you newbies
by slaying these semi-good but not truly good players more often.

Imagine their tear soaked faces while we show them who is truly boss. Happens often!

this is highly requested but rare has said it's not going to happen and report the people who called you those names if you don't like them

  • When i was playing in open crew i cant even remember how many times i saw people from crew doing that, attacking people on telltale.

Ships basically are just docked and there are no one there because they doing tell tell and they burn and sink their ship just for fun, its not even pvp, just one side attack because of fun.

I hate when players are doing that and always leave the crew (i dont want to be seen with crew like that cause im friendly xD), but thats just how it is.
There is always a chance that someone will interrupt your telltale.

  • changes do need to be made.

at the very least some sort of pvp flag system to mark players/ships who are questing and thus OFF LIMITS.

that and penalties for those who kill players for giggles especially if they blow up those who came to help them

Open crews are largely new/casual/ or low on the food chain players. Not all but most

Both the tall tale people and those open crews need those battle reps together

They are often relatively close in skill and it gives them a chance to improve.

Personally I'm not someone that engages in or encourages messing with tall tale people or new people after a certain skill and experience level is attained but both need that engagement.
It's necessary for both to move up the chain

  • @capt-t-bust3r how can you even compare those... sot pvp isn't nearly as toxic as the pve playerbase. Sinking off spawn isn't as toxic as doxxing and ddosing someone for sinking you.

  • @capt-t-bust3r Indeed... Just today me and my bf joined to complete the last challenges for the event. Spawned in, sailed to nearby fort to get cannonballs only to be followed by another ship only trying to sink us. We server hopped because they ruined our chance to complete the last Flameheart fight and so in the new server we see the ashen lord tornado. Sailed to that and boom, brig sinks us as soon as we spend about 5 mins fighting the ashen lord

  • @shadowstar-x1 why though? This is a PvPvE game. This is why the put check points on tall tales.

    Best advice:

Don't carry more loot than you are willing to lose.

  • @catibri accept it) in this community, it is considered the norm to attack like a rat from around the corner, to mark up, to destroy anyone. Just because "it's a pirate game". According to the level of toxicity, local PVP "heroes" will soon catch up with ks and dota

Sounds like normal player interactions to me...

    GOLD!

  • @catibri Ahoy! Recently there was a huge thread on the forum regarding the subject of PvPvE with over 5000 posts. It's been a hot topic.
It has now been locked and the discussion closed.

@meroviel said in PvPvE - The Team's Thoughts:

    Hi all,

As the debate around PvP and PvE has been going for some time, the team wanted to address it, to lay out our vision and the design intent of the game which, at it's heart will always be a shared world adventure game.

In Episode 2 of the SoT Podcast, we have a nuanced discussion surrounding the community debate.

You can find the full episode here.

For now, the discussion around PvPvE is closed on the Forums. After much discussion and analysis of the conversations that were taking place, we have taken the decision to lock the MegaThread and will not be re-opening it.

We may open up this new thread in future if developments within the game warrant a new discussion. If that happens then this thread will be monitored and replies will be limited in order to keep the discussion around what the team have said and avoid the personal attacks that we have been seeing around this topic.

    Thanks,
    j0toro

Remember each voyage will be unique. Some may feel like the whole world is conspiring against you and everything goes wrong but also there will be times that the planets align and you have the best sessions ever!
For me the bad one's are few and far between.
Not all pirates we meet on the waves are toxic, but when you do come across these, there are many ways to Report a Player.
    Don't give up yet. :)

    Dropping anchor :)
