Make Exclusive Items Purchasable via Content Packs

  • Hello there,

This may be an unpopular opinion but I would like exclusive cosmetics, excluding the ones you can earn in-game anytime you ever play, to become purchasable via content packs that you can buy from Rare's online store. This suggestion applies to: Twitch Stream Exclusives, Prime Exclusives, Season Exclusives, Controller Exclusives.. anything that you cannot earn by playing any day, any year, in-game.

Don't have a specific pack that you missed out on? Purchase it using real currency. I make this suggestion, which might make some people upset, because I feel that timed exclusives (real-life or otherwise) take away from the game experience. I found myself focusing less on good times with friends and more on trying to complete things on time just to obtain timed-exclusive cosmetics... So I have quit for over two years. The timed-exclusives were such a huge hog of my limited time. I've also been noticing that many other people have had similar requests to bring back certain exclusives, or recycle them for a round two. I feel content packs would allow story to continue moving forward while allowing people to more customize to how they want.

Still want to incentivize people to play the current season? Don't offer the current season's cosmetics on store until after the season is over. If you missed out on something after the season was over at no fault of your own, you could then just go purchase it. All the money produced by content packs could go towards helping further development of the game.

    Thank you for the consideration.

  • nah. if you want the limited cosmetics you should watch the streams, buy the controller, play the season.

If you don't get them that way, wait for the next cosmetics.

  • @naantam y tho? ruins the point, I have exclusives and if they ever introduced them to buy I would be angry. It ruins the point of it being "exclusive" just get the items while you can.

  • @naantam

This simply removes all value of those items and makes them no longer exclusive, remove all uniqueness one can achieve... to have anyone with enough cash to buy it. The rarity of those items is what makes them special and creates a form of uniqueness that can be achieved. If everyone has it they are no longer special.

If you can simply throw money at it, those items no longer tell a story... they become meaningless. Just something someone bought... where you part of the Alpha? Nope just bought the pack. Did this event? Nope just bought a pack. Played this season? Nope just bought a pack.

I don't do twitch drops, while I wouldn't care about those personally... it still is a manner in which people showcase they are part of the community. Just throwing money at the developers is not the same as being part of a community.

If you want them, you need to show up, play, etc. They are cosmetics... you decide whether it is worth it or not. Just as anyone that wants the cosmetics from the store, need to decide whether it is worth it for them or not.

  • Agree with you on the twitch drop exclusives for sure.

Not so much on season rewards, prime gaming drops, or controller exclusives. Those did have a paid for component and were incentive already for people to support the developers. I don't have many of these, and that's okay. I didn't buy into the promotional material at the time, but I certainly was aware of them at least.

Twitch drops on the other hand were sometimes cryptically made available, announced sometimes only over twitter. They are free to the community, even if they cost Rare to implement. Rare should offer these again as a monetization option.

Nobody should feel privileged to own Twitch drops because they idled in a twitch stream for 20 minutes. There might be a small percentage of people who can claim to have all of them, and might feel pretty great about themselves, but I think most people would feel bad about telling a friend where they got those cosmetics from and that they are no longer available. Earning them in game and paying for cosmetics is a much different investment than idling in a twitch channel. They should not be treated as equivalent in terms of "showing support" or "being part of a community". If you want to be part of the community at a later point, you pay your dues. That is what OP is asking.

These twitch drops served their purpose, keeping Sea of Thieves artificially afloat as a game people stream on twitch. It attracted the few players to the game it was designed to and now Rare should commercialize these. I wouldn't even feel ripped off by that, I would gladly play some ancient coins to buy individual pieces I missed for 75-100 ancient coins max.

I would not buy a full set again unless I missed the whole drop, which I haven't.

Rare should do this out of good will, not to make a quick buck, even though they would be doing exactly that.
