Dark Adventurer Set

  • Let me start by saying I love the design of the Dark Adventurer sets you can buy in the Pirate Legend lobby, however I think it is far too overpriced. Working it out it costs almost 74.5 million gold in total to have everything Dark Adventurer (this includes the ship set, outfit set, weapon set, musical instruments set and the tools/items set). The amount of gold rewarded in game is far too little to justify this pricing for it. I'm fine with there being a grind for it as it's a more luxurious endgame item, however games are supposed to be fun, and that level and amount of grinding could easily cause someone to get fatigued playing the game and leave it altogether. I played a session today for about 4/5 hours and earnt around about 300,000 gold, which isn't even a dent on that large total of 74.5 million, and would also mean that I cannot purchase any other in game items or cosmetics for the entire amount of time I'm saving for the Dark Adventurer set, I know a lot of people who play regularly and Twitch stream etc will alresdy have earned this kind of money but it in some cases it is their job to play games. For the average player who wants to earn this cool set and doesn't have a huge amount of time to commit to the game, they could probably expect to earn this set by the time they are 75 years old.

You DONT have to set yourself to buy it, "All" buy what you want. If you set a goal, keep it. But without a goal, you will stop playing. Myself, I want the Title of killing the White Megalodon. Very RARE thing to happen, but I keep trying and hope I will. Without it, I end this game. (my goal atm)

I expect to earn the items when I am good and ready. I dont expect to earn every little item in the game, like those streamers I am sure you watch and expect same.
But that should be good reason to keep playing.

session today for about 4/5 hours and earnt around about 300,000 gold,

That a good session. Most kids would be happy with just that. Suggest you maintain Emissary flag, Collect Doublons and..idk sell them for Bags of gold (you can do this) and sink every skeleton ship and kill every Meg.

Do you really think a set that costs 75 million, when every other set only costs a few million, is meant for the average player?

  • @mferr11 Every set in the game should be for every type of player, not just the ones who do it as a job and have all the time in the world to dedicate to it.

To suggest that only certain sets should be for certain type of people is just an unfair statement to make, some people just don't simply have the time to play that long to earn that much. They have things going on in the real world like jobs, kids etc and I wish I could play more time on it but, that only gives them limited time to play. Why should they have a hard time being able to get it just because someone chooses to play games as a job or is successfully doing it already? I can't just quit my job to try and start up playing games full time just for 1 set that should be obtainable in a fair amount of time for every type of player whether casual or professional. I have bills and other things and making that move to full time games with no guarantee of it even being successful or an income just for getting one set you happen to like a lot is not a realistic option.

  • I only needed the boots and the shirt. Gold spent on the gloves and belt could have waited.

I can accept never owning the hat, jacket, and ship livery.
I have never felt the need for complete sets in this game, kind of like wearing matching outfits with a girlfriend, it just looks corny to me.

Otherwise, I'm grinding for Silent Barnacle gear.

  • @joe-krakatoa I personally like having full sets to put on so for me wanting it all would be a thing. Having the time and gold to do that though I'll probably be dead in real life before I earn it hahaha.

And clearly the game agrees with you on not liking full sets, only gotta look at the Plunder Pass rewards to see that haha.

  • @burnbacon I get what you're saying but I actually like it all, so whilst I don't have to have it all I would like it all because I like the sets. I'm aware also that you will get out of it what you put into it, but I don't see myself personally having the time or gold to even get it all unless I played it full time as a job haha. My current goal is to get that set, but already knowing how long that grind is going to take and knowing that by going for it I cannot purchase any other loot in the game for that length of time, unless I want to just have to extend that time even longer, is already off-putting.

I also haven't had the white Meg yet, that's another good goal lol

This is a bad argument. You simply can't balance everything for everyone.

Let's say crew A are big fans of the game. Very dedicated, play multiple times a week, and earn about 1 million gold a week due to how often they play.

Let's say crew B are more casual players. They hop on once a week, and just play for laughs. They're lucky to make 50k in a week.

Let's say crew C are complete casuals. They hop on once a fortnight or so. They are completely hopeless. Making 10k is massive to them.

How do you balance a reward for all of these players so that all of them can achieve it, yet still feel rewarded when unlocking it?

To suggest that only certain sets should be for certain type of people is just an unfair statement to make,

Says who? Rare seems okay with it. Why should the dedicated players not be rewarded? Answer me that. The casuals have a bunch of cosmetic sets to strive for, why can't the dedicated players have 1? Literally, only 1.

some people just don't simply have the time to play that long to earn that much. They have things going on in the real world like jobs, kids etc and I wish I could play more time on it but, that only gives them limited time to play. Why should they have a hard time being able to get it just because someone chooses to play games as a job or is successfully doing it already? I can't just quit my job to try and start up playing games full time

By that logic everyone should be boosted to max rank in all companies and given all commendations, because some people may not have time to grind it out. I want the PL cannons, but I'm only at about 400 skeleton ships. Should I make a post about how it's too hard, and that they need to nerf it? No, I either put the work in or get over it.

1 set that should be obtainable in a fair amount of time for every type of player whether casual or professional.

This is where I fundamentally disagree with you. I do not think you can balance something for casual players and hardcore players. Casual players will say it's too hard, hardcore players will say it's too easy. How do you deal with that? Give them separate rewards.

    You can't always have everything.

  • @mferr11 I understand and agree with some of your points but either way though items in the DA set are like more than 5x the price of anything else in the game, even halfing the total amount for the DA sets would still make it the most expensive set in the game by far, the pricing on this just seems like overkill on making something expensive just for the sake of it to me personally. They could even just offer the items periodically for some gold off their normal price during certain events like a limited time sale, however I do also acknowledge how annoyed that would make people who slaved away for the set at full price. But then again they give people rewards in the Plunder Pass that some already have from purchasing it earlier as it's not all new content, and don't even give them any gold, doubloons or store current in place of something if they already have that item so it hardly feels rewarding for some of those people too.

I just wanted to see what others thought on the matter and whether they think it's priced far too high or not as it could have been way cheaper and still ridiculously expensive. Either way I suppose we will have to agree to disagree on this occasion. Thanks for your input though.

  • @gebr1l The Dark Adventurers set was actually put in place for those pirates (like me) that had millions and millions of gold (i was at 40/50 million gold and 45k doubloons at the time of its release) and thats after buying every single in game (non emporium) cosmetic.

this also meant that each time they released new cosmetics for me it meant nothing, just as soon as they released i purchased them and was done with it, because nothing put a dent in my stash especially considering the hauls i have 99/100 times

me regular crew (@mr_shatango and @Nessiroj ) made 1+ milllion last tuesday after a 4/5 hour session whilst just doing some events and a voyage here or there.

and after that i crewed up with some more people from here on the forums.

The past couple of days i have been crewing up with @Greengrimz @h4x3333 @Mr_Shatango and we where just going for Forts of Fortune and Reaper V ships. there wasnt a single day where we got less then 1 or 2 million after a couple hour just focussing those things.

the FoF pays out 120~140k without any emmisary so selling it at reaper V it goes for 300k+ just for the FoF alone, let alone the stuff you grab on the way and the people you sink/emmisary flags

  • Its a pity that you like the set so much. Because you should rather look at it as something for someone who´s been Legend for 2 yrs now and already bought everything they liked so now they have that huge balance of coins that are meant for nothing, so they have something to show people that they´ve been around the sea for so long that all the adventuring they´ve made was actually just for fun and they´re long over the point where you grind real hard to get a certain custom. At least thats my subjective View on those really expensive things.

Not every set should be for everyone. People have 100s of millions of gold and this set was a money sink for them. If you want then grind like they have. Gold is extremely easy to earn.

  • @gebr1l

You got 300k in one session for one day. Thats one day for 300k that is a lot and 74m in the grand scheme of things isn't a lot.

This isn't something that you need to earn in a month or 2 months. If it takes 6months then so be it. Its a goal that you set and something you can work towards. You can earn these cosmetics anyway you want to. You want to do events?? Do events. You want to do quests do quests.

I just saw a streamer earn 2 to 4million in a sloop. Granted it was about a 8 to 12 hour run but still.

Cosmetics are suppose to be the bragging rights and Dark Adventurer set is suppose to be that.

Also not going to lie, the only thing on the Dark Adventurer set that anyone has liked from the ship cosmetic has been the sails. The new Reaper sets and even the Merchant set looks better which is sad lol.

Well thats my opinion. This is something that is suppose to take time which is the point.

  • join an alliance server

only issue I have with expensive cosmetics being used as peacock bait is that wealth sharing kills any sort of effort standard so it makes it whatev to me

It's all subjective but imo the most appealing stuff is all cheap and easy to earn but that's just me

  • Nothing wrong with the cost of the set. Its something for those who were playing since the start and could afford it. All the cosmetics in the game cost well over 100m now. Plenty of other cosmetics to snag instead. :)

    My advice:
    Making gold like a "pro"
Become more efficient, work on commendations, make sure you're max in all companies, and heck, get top tier on every emissary ledger. Get a good, grindy crew together, and figure out your favorite ways to make money. Time is money, so if something is taking too much time, you drop that behavior like it's hot and move on. If it's taking you 5 min for your crew to get prepared to take out a mermaid statue, then it's probably not worth the time. Same for bottle quests. They are too hit-and-miss to spend time on (unless you are already doing a similar quest on the same island). Also, consider the emissary quests. For Athena's Fortune, you want to always do the emissary quest (but Athena quest are horrible for making gold, so that's not important). But, for GH and OoS, you should realistically be doing DR voyages, because they make the most money. They make so much money that they muscle out the emissary quests. Merchant, though, is the most weird. Lost Shipments are great, and you can even do the emissary quests while doing the Lost Shipment voyages. And, while you're doing those two, you should be buying and selling commodity crates. That can be a lot to juggle, but that playstyle can outperform world events.
You should never drop and re-raise your flag unless you are an Athena's Fortune with extra time, or if you are doing non DR GH or OoS (Though it still may be better to keep the flag up).
If you are doing world events, PUT THE REAPER FLAG UP. I see so many go to world events with the OG 3 flags and barely hit grade 3. If you want rep for those companies, don't do world events. Putting Reaper's up will incite more danger, but if you really want gold, you should be doing Reaper's PvEvP. One exception is if you want Athena's Rep, it is fine to go to a FoF with one.
The leader (and hopefully, crew) of the ship must try to express their perfectionism (easy for me). No dawdling, no staring at maps, no staying on ship looking for other crews (you should do that on island approach, and every now and then while on the island), no music (unless sailing and no sail angles are needed), no grog (duh), no over-supply hoarding (250 cannonballs is too much, you can gain that passively, but don't be wasting time sitting at outposts/forts getting it).

Those are your options, trade around through them, and most importantly, have fun. You don't have to be an emotionless grinder to be efficient.
The intent of the Dark Adventurer set.
The lore behind the Dark Adventurer set is that the Reapers want to turn Pirate Legends to their cause. It's funny, because the best way to get gold is by being a Reaper. So, in that way, the outrageous price is going to turn you into a reaper if you aren't already.
It's also funny, even though the red gems are probably rubies: To make red stained glass, you make the glass impure with gold. So, us pirates may literally be wearing gold when wearing Dark Adventurer cosmetics.
Like the others have said, these cosmetics are not for your "average pirate." If you want black and red, go get the hunter outfit, or the inky kraken outfit, or even some of a few admiral sets. This set is just the ultimate gold flex. Like @CallMeBackdrafT said, all previous sets for pirates like us just meant nothing. Easy to obtain on day 1 of the update, then there's plenty of time to make your money back until the next update.
The Dark Adventurer set is the first set to actually mean something in terms of gold count. I am, blissfully, too poor to buy the whole set. I have dropped a total of 41 million gold into the set and I have 17 million currently. And so, I have something to continue to grind for.
    Buying guide
If you want some DA swag in your life, then buy the smart way. If you are willing to give up the ship for a while, that's 37.8 million off of the budget. Then, you factor in things in order of want. If you don't wear a dress, why spend 3 million on a dress? Why spend millions on vanity items that you don't wear? Why buy weapons that you don't use? Why buy equipment that you barely see?
If you do a lot of little subtractions, then you can shave quite a lot off of the proposed price of the set. Buy what you want first, and save the stuff you won't see often for later, and buy the stuff you won't ever see for last, if you buy them at all. A friend of mine nabbed almost the full DA outfit for 6.5 million. That's less than a tenth of the full set price.
Subtracting items that I'm definitely not buying, I need 30 million to buy the rest of the set, if I even buy all of that. I have 17 million now, so I'm only 13 million away from getting everything that I want.

In short, make money faster, realize that the price is for a reason, and buy shrewdly.

  • @gebr1l

Working it out it costs almost 74.5 million gold in total to have everything Dark Adventurer (this includes the ship set, outfit set, weapon set, musical instruments set and the tools/items set)

I did the math a while ago, and the total is actually: 80,925,800 gold for all the ship cosmetics, clothing cosmetics, tools, weapons, and hairstyles.

  • It's a end game set. Hence why it takes so long to get
