RARE! MAKE THIS A THING! V2

  • I think it's time Rare does something about bananas. We all know what I'm talking about. You're fighting skellies on a tiny atoll, or making that big money at a Fort of Fury and you're about to die. You need food. You don't want to swim back to the boat, because you can't let your crew think you're slacking.

You go through all the supply barrels in that location and what do you find? Cannonballs? Planks? Chainshot? Nothing to help you...but then you see that lone barrel tucked away amongst the weeds in the corner of the island/fort. You run to it, open it up, and with a sliver of health, you find...a banana. Maybe two or three. You don't NEED a banana or two or three. You need something that's going to give you that boost to hop back in and keep up the fight. You need a coconut (at least) or if you're lucky, a pineapple. There are no "good" foods to be had, though.

"So what do you propose as a solution?", you ask. Well, here is my proposition; a phasing out of bananas as a source of food in the game by way of a reporting system. Here's how it would work: You find bananas in a random barrel, you use the reporting system to let Rare know what island you found them on, which barrel they were in and the quantity of the bananas in the barrel. I understand that most of you will feel this protocol will be enough to accomplish the goal set forth, but it won't be enough. We will have to do more.

The second and more efficient means of getting bananas removed from the game is to stop using them. By utilizing that same reporting system, each player in the game will be encouraged to report any other players seen using/taking/storing bananas during a gameplay session. Each player reported will automatically recieve a penalty fee of 100,000 gold and a 30 minute brigging period. I feel that this would be enough of a deterrent to keep players from grabbing bananas on a stocking run for the ship willy nilly.

I know what most of you are going to say..."Bananas are a nod to Rare's ties to Donkey Kong...and Diddy Kong, too! They aren't going to get rid of that. It's too culturally important to their heritage as a video game studio!!!" I understand that point. I do; but there are much bigger things at play here than a shout out to a video game monkey that had little to no cultural signifigance to anyone.

This is something that Rare should have fixed LONG ago, but they didn't. Instead, what did they do? They glorified this potassium laced nuisance with a skeleton on Maurauder's Arch and a specifically marked barrel of them on Sanctuary Outpost. So now it's up to us, the players, to try and fix this mess that Rare has saddled us with.

TL;DR - Bananas are killing the game. Get rid of them.

  • What's wrong with bananas? Not everything can be a pineapple. I just stuff my face with whatever I can. If you're really worried about a consistent source of 'good food', just break out the ol' fishing pole.

  • @oftheoldschool

So you are arguing that you are about to die and that the game needs to give you good food to survive because you didn't want to go back to the ship??

    Negative.

Bananas are fine the way they are. Either go back to the ship or make due with the banana, or bring a supply crate onto the island with you with the food you need.

Trust me I get the anger towards the banana, but its part of the game mechanics and the RNG of the food.

Remove banana's and the balance of food will be out of whack. Honestly I think you are the only one I have ever heard suggest that banana's need to be removed.

Sorry broski, its a no from me.

  • There can’t be “good food” without the “bad food”. Otherwise the standard is raised and coconuts would just become the “bad food”. If bananas were removed, there would be less of a dynamic in the food system.

  • Yay for nanners! No touchy!

  • Bananas bad. OldSchool for president 2024.

  • Bananas deserve love too...

  • Eat your 5 a day buddy, dont want you catching scurvy.

  • I need my Piratassium

  • I don't mean to sound toxic whatsoever, but I detest this idea. Bananas are, aside from a nod to DK one of my favorite franchises, a tier 0 food. While fairly useless to players they ARE indeed useful. I exclusively use bananas for filling storage crates for sale, feeding pigs, and filling health when out of combat on the ship. You wouldn't want to feed a pig mangos or pineapple would you? And as far as not wanting to go back to the ship in an intense fight, I feel that. The solution is bringing a storage crate filled with meat and high tier fruit. They were fairly easy to find before and now you can straight buy them.

  • @oftheoldschool, I've known you for some time now. And I can tell when you're trolling and when you're being sincere.

This post is 100% not a joke.

All foods have their purpose in this game.

Pomegranates, mangos, pineapples, cooked food: all of that is PvP food.

    Coconuts: PvE food

Bananas: In-fighting food. Used to recover from crewmates throwing fire or blunderbombs at you; setting off kegs near you; or using the quick-swapping exploit to bypass the friendly-fire damage negation (it's a thing, look it up).

Point is, if they do away with bananas, then I would need to cut into my PvE rations when I'm on the verge of being team-killed. Which means I would need to cut into my PvP rations when fighting PvE, and I'll be damned if I burn a single mango on a skeleton. Ashen lord or not.

It's a no from me, old friend.

  • I use bananas to top off, or when I'm out of danger and on the ship and want to save my good food for later.

Oh, and the whole voting report thing won't work because the spawn rates in barrels are mostly random, and bananas essentially spawn in ALL of them.

  • cook 5 pieces of fish or shark and keep them on you for when your fighting on an island, that would be your "good food"

  • @oftheoldschool nah keep the bananas they are how I measure all other foods... like how many bananas is a cooked piece of shark worth. its a scale thing.

  • Your hate for bananas feels strange and unnatural. This seems like the kind of thing you decided to write after rage quitting because a banana didn't save you from dying. Unfortunately, I don't think a lot of people can relate to your hate for bananas and I can say with confidence that they are not ruining the game.
