Beware of this bug... If you buy an Appearance Potion and don't use it right away there's a chance your character will be changed randomly one day, and Rare can't give you your pirate back.
I have a very sad story to go with this one...
I met my boyfriend on Sea of Thieves a year ago, he had a really rare nice looking female pirate that he spent hours scrolling for. We both made really great memories with that pirate... He bought a potion just to scroll randomly and see if he could find a good male pirate but never used it. I got a message one morning telling me that his pirate got changed into an old granny, I thought he was joking, he wasn't.
He sent a ticket into Rare, and very unfortunately they could not give him his pirate back. They did give him a potion, but honestly it doesn't take away from the loss. I personally spent 14 hours scrolling for my pirate, my boyfriend spent about the same. To have that taken away by a bug is very, very, frustrating. It's basically like losing all of your rep.

I know this bug and similar bugs are not fixed, because recently he went scrolling again and selected a pirate (though none of the ones so far are anywhere close to his old one), and the next morning his pirate was changed. At least it got rng'd into a decent one this time...

Hopefully Rare actually makes a fix for this, and makes an option to not use the potion if you buy it. I'm assuming they couldn't give his old character back because they don't save those files. In that case, they need to start saving them. Then they can even add an option to undo the use of a potion.
I don't think Rare considers this a big issue at the moment, because they think everyone just picks whichever pirate they come across. No, some of us spend hours searching for a rare looking pirate, so these bugs need to be taken seriously. I know if I lose my pirate to a bug I'll most likely quit the game.
