Is Vsync broken?

  • Hi, I previously was playing SOT more than a year ago and used to use vsync and everything was fine. I came to play again this week and it seems vsync is broken?...at least on my pc. It is partially working but with a lot of stuttering that I could see when I rotate my character. If I turn vsync off then I see my framerate is around 80 and the stutters go away...but then I get screen tearing. It used to work perfectly smooth last time I played. Also, while trying previous nvidia drivers to fix the issue, now it seems the vsync isn't working at all. It should be locking my framerate to 60 like it did over a year ago. Is anyone else seeing this behavior?

  • @klootonicplague There seems to be issues with AMD's OpenGL drivers that are causing issues with Vsync if you upgraded to 20H2.

  • I actually have an nvidia gtx 1050 ti card. I wonder if it's still related to that version of windows 10 though. Something else I noticed that's odd is that if I hook my pc up to the tv through hdmi, the vsync problem doesn't happen. Normally im hooked up to a monitor through dvi. However, when hooked up through the dvi, even though vsync on SOT is stuttering really badly, in other games like rocket league and GTA V the vsync works fine. This problem is very strange especially since it never was an issue a year or two ago when I was playing the game before on this pc.

  • @klootonicplague Turn off vsync in Nvidia control panel and enable it in game if you wish to use it. If you don't want to use vsync, then adjust you graphical settings so that your framerate is consistently above your refresh rate. If you upgraded to 20H2, you may want to roll back until they fix the issues with the update.

Hi, yes I already had vsync off in the control panel and turned on in the game menu. I just found it very strange that the vsync works right when hooked up to my tv through hdmi but does not work right when hooked up to my monitor through the dvi...but my other games work fine with the vsync and the monitor hooked up through dvi. Its very strange. If I get some spare time, I might try going back to the older windows 10 version using a system image I made a while back and see if the problem really was caused by the latest windows version.

  • For anyone who might need this, I figured out this broken vsync problem. Turns out that using my Logitech c525 webcam as my mic in game was causing the horrible stuttering when vsync was on. I had used the mic on the webcam for this game and others for years so I'm not sure what changed in windows or the game to cause this issue...and I would have normally never guessed that could be the issue. However, if I unplug the webcam the problem completely goes away. I can even unplug the webcam while inside the game and see the frame rate immediately lock onto a solid vsync 60 instead of wildly fluctuating between 58 and 62 and stuttering. This issue clearly does not affect all usb microphones though because if I disconnect the webcam, plug in my usb Blue Snowball mic, and set that as the default, then everything works fine. Also, I figured out that if I uninstall the Logitech software and drivers for the c525 webcam and let Microsoft install its generic drivers then everything works fine too if I use that again. I just lose the Logitech webcam settings program which is unfortunate but that's not the end of the world I guess.
