Glitterbeard... 10/10

  • I genuinely shed some tears at a videogame for the first time in years after learning the story of Glitterbeard and the meaning behind it. If you haven't done it, go figure it out. By request of me and Rare, try to do it without looking anything up. Me and a crewmate managed to figure it all out on ourselves, and boy was it worth it.

I'll give you a snipit: Imagine 4 allianced sloops all sobbing, gushing, with oohs and aahs, and some absolutely gorgeous visuals and music, and that's the Glitterbeard Experience. Go get yourself the some of the best cannon flares in the game, and a story to remember for years to come.

Rare, I am impressed. Thank you for sharing this story with us, thank you for making this so heartwarming. This is what makes you guys at Rare special. Cheers.

  • Aye, amazing experience you created there Rare! Chapeau l'artiste!

  • I randomly read a book yesterday at an outpost, and got 'glitterbeard' sails.. not particularly impressive so I thought nothing of it. only skimmed through the journal so I'll have to find and read it again but it didn't strike me as anything special.. am intrigued what ya mean now though.

  • I just woke up and I'm still all giddy and happy from yesterday... I beg you guys, go do this questline and solve the puzzle... It is worth it, I can't stress it enough.

  • @klutchxking518

The fact that you need 8 people to complete the end, this quest line is garbage. I hate forced cooperation in this game with every fiber of my being.

Oh and don't be mistaken, I also hate the forced PvP aspect of this game with every fiber of my being. Forced PvP of forced PvE is horrible
Complete quest X number of times.
    Complete with another crew
    Steal item from another crew

I hate both of these types. It should just be

    Turn in

  • @xultanis-dragon Totally disagree. Forced things aren't the best, but this one is forgivable

  • As far as intent and tribute goes it's a wonderful thing

as far as game play goes I'm entirely against anything and everything involving cooperation. I find it terribly inconsistent and ineffective in a game designed like this.

I understand the intent but this was a beautiful thing that could and should have been able to be enjoyed like a tall tale where even someone solo can experience it.

Intent and reality of the environment don't always match up. This is going to mostly be viewed on youtube and done through alliance servers and a very slim minority of lucky people on random servers.

Not the best way to consume the lovely content imo

The last thing I wanna see is hostility and unpleasant interactions created surrounding this event and that's what it's going to largely create with required random server cooperation in a game filled with justified paranoia and ruthlessness.

  • Requiring co-operation for this is just sad decision.

There is lot of people who can't get this done as they will never find enough players to work on common goal. I am probably one of those players as my earlier crew mates has sailed to other games so I am mostly solo nowadays.

So this basically means that I can't pay my respects to your fallen crew member in game because I cannot finish it by myself and this makes me sad. I would have wanted to honour his memory with finishing this.

For me too see this, only options left would be either youtube or see it from through some streamers but that doesn't feel right so I will pass those options.

Anyway please accept my condolences about your lost team mate and I hope he is sailing in calmer seas.

  • I think that this was a wonderful memorial for a wonderful person and think that the cooperation requirement makes this unique in its own right. It shows the dedication and community involvement required to complete this Easter egg. 11/10

  • Unfortunate experience so far, either not many know about it or dont care/want to do or trust us to join. Those that came, not alot of respect, just killing and sinking us.

After 8hrs managed to get enough to listen and join in. Great experience when it does come together.

Better to let this happen naturally asking before shooting esp for revisits, home flybys to see if ships are there.

  • Many of you seem to be missing the point of Glitterbeard's experiences - it's all about meeting others, learning from them, befriending them, sharing in adventures, and coming together as a crew.

That's why it takes 8 - you have to go above and beyond the comfort zone of your own crew and GASP! Actually talk to people.

  • @alatami1
Team work cooperation tasks are very difficult in this game.

The GlitterBeard task represents the person that would help you but the individuals we try to ask for help in game are not always the compassionate kind hearted souls.

We encounter more toxic players with rude behavior, cyber bullying, cheating, and a disturbing verbal/spawn killing/gender harassment enjoyment towards other players. We are anonymous to each other so there are no consequences in online gaming due to the negative social culture of watching other players suffer.

The cooperative achievements of arena and skeleton thrones where time consumingly difficult to complete due to the nature the toxic player behavior in the SoT community.

  • Usually It's very hard to make aliances, and now to convince other crews to go to the island, at a particular time, do the particular stuff.... Ya.... Great job to give a very very very very hard thing to do...
If it was easy to talk outside de game and get 8 players with the same goal get on the same server...

Sucks that 99% of the players will never get to see this...

Just wait till nobody else needs it anymore, those that solo or duo or trio requiring a minimum of 2 other crews... there are 5 ships in total, it is totally not reasonable to have 3/5 or 4/5 ships working together. These type of forced collaborations are all the hype when they come out, everyone wants to do it and then everyone has done it and have no interest in running it again, trying to find multiple crews, etc. They then focus on their own needs again and anyone that hasn't completed it by that point is scuffed.

The idea behind it might be noble, but the execution is not one to last. This is a time limited experience, once the hype dies down and people have done it... it will be dead in the water without any hope of completion. There is no longevity in the design... it is a pity that their tribute is going to be short lived and experienced by a small percentage of the community.

  • @cotu42 There'll always be new players who are willing to trust a pirate at the promise of a rare and hard-to-get beard. You have to get lucky and show commitment to the cause. It's not meant to be easy, the whole point is to show your devotion to solving the puzzle.

Right... you can get 8 pirates on a server, based on solely 'new' players... you are now claiming that 2, 3 or all 4 of the other ships have to be new players or you have to be lucky. If you are a majority of the time a solo or duo player... which we know many people are, it just isn't feasible. This is not about devotion to solving a puzzle, it is simply finding multiple crews willing to put aside their own plans to help out a stranger. Most people that have the beard will not put in the effort to do it again, they have other plans and goals they want to achieve.

Be realistic, we all know that this tale is short lived and the majority of players will not be able to experience this tribute and story line to completion due to the requirement of other crews (especially with these amounts that nearly comes to the entire server has to work together).

I challenge you without the use of an alliance server or joining with multiple crews or buying ships (you can bribe the current crew, but not have them invite others) to come back to this voyage and complete it in like 3 or 4 months on a sloop, you can bring one friend! Simply join a server and do it. The same happens for any of these forced challenges, if you want a far easier one you can do right now, just needing a single other pirate and will still be a challenge; get someone to sit with you on the Marauders Skeleton Throne.

  • Yo I gave this my best shot for a bit yesterday but I'm seriously stuck on where to start... Is it meant to just be luck that you stumble across them? The journal I keep finding is 'my maiden voyage' at all outposts, part 3 ends with "where on earth was I going to start?".. part 4 has "free and wild" so I assumed somewhere in the wilds.. am I at all in the right area??

If not would you kindly give me a place to start and what clue is supposed to lead me there? Thanks

  • @i-fosa-i here you go, but good luck on the final one...

    The final one:

I think this is a gross oversimplification. Most pirates I encounter personally are rather neutral, and those that aren't are friendly or quickly move on after their/our attack. Those that represent your description are actually the minority - I experience those bad cats about 1 out of every 5 sessions. That's 4 where I'm generalizing a good time. Not bad odds, IMO.

As for Glitterbeard's difficuly, it isn't hard at all - it only took me a few hours to find 21 of the 22 journals. As for the final 1, simply get some friends together in a galleon - that's 4. Then go find another galleon of 4, which makes the 8 you need,, and create an alliance. If they're reluctant to participate, then make them an offering that they can't refuse - pay them! Easy!

  • Earned my Glitter today! 😁🎉

Such an AMAZING experience! TY Rare!

BTW, that's me, 3rd from left - with all 8 of us sporting our newfound glitterbeards.

  • @galactic-geek what? That would mean all of the sweaty pvp players would have to do something for someone other than themselves. Too much to ask for, apparently, as evidence by some of the rude remarks in this thread.

  • My sole issue with Glitterbeard journey is how defensive everyone, i think it was a good addition overall but when people shows dislike and critisism to it everyone jumps.
Yes, its sad that James White passed away, and its really nice of Rare to immortalize James but its still content and players are bound to critisize it, for the good or for the bad.

So when modders shuts down critisism just because he passed away is absurd, not everyone have the patience to read journals, This. Is. Reality.
I personally really enjoyed it, to find 8 players is a chore and not everyone are going to be on board with bunch of journals so enough with being so defensive about it, no one is making fun of James.

I do not address it to OP, just to the general state of critisicm here.

  • @gajotnt thanks... But I obviously knew there are guides for all locations, that's not what I wanted... If the OP meant what he said about it being a really cool experience I wanted to find them all by myself by following the clues.... This is what I asked for, I want JUST THE FIRST LOCATION AND WHAT CLUE.LEADS YOU THERE.....

  • @i-fosa-i there is no order. The journals in the world are an account of his journey from his arrival in the sea of thieves and are meant to be stumbled upon during other voyages. They aren’t a ‘go here find this one, then go there to find the next one’ kinda voyage. :)

  • @lizalaroo great, that's why it took me a whole day to find nothing... Cheers for clarifying.

  • @i-fosa-i honestly don't see how it would make it more fun to do it by yourself (not searching up a guide) as OP said then.

  • @i-fosa-i go to Pirate Log ➜ Reputation ➜ Bilge Rats ➜ Legends of the Sea
there you can find your clues to the locations of the books...

  • It took me 6 hours to find the 1st 21 journals. It took me 2 hours to gather the 8 crew + alliance. And it took us 1 hour to get #22.

It's not as hard as you might think - you just have to commit to it, talk to people, and maybe incentivize them. My 4-man galleon crew did an Athena voyage and promised to give away all of our non-Athena loot (which, surprisingly, nobody took, because they were happy with the event's rewards). Once you have your 4-man galleon, it's just a matter of gathering another full galleon crew (or equivalent).

In our search, we found 1 duo sloop and 2 solo sloops. The duo sloop helped us split the world map in half to find others. Of the 2 solos, 1 agreed to help and open his crew while the other fled from his own ship while setting it aloft and eventually scuttled and disappeared. Then when the 1 remaining solo sloop got his new open crewmate, the new crewmate had no mic and never joined our party. We had to use Xbox Live messaging, game chat, quick chat, and emotes to let him in on what we were trying to accomplish. That took some doing, but he eventually got the picture.

During the final moments, everyone went quiet and followed the music. Then, as everything was revealed, a collective cheer went up, and drinks were had all around. 🍻

  • Aye, just gathering 8 people on a server.....is a "oohhh" "ahhh" experiance.
To bad i wont see it because of that.

Good thing that theres youtube. :P

You are doing yourself a disservice by watching instead of experiencing it.

  • @galactic-geek I meant....i wanna do it you know but gathering 8 people is hard when you're just on a sloop and refuse bigger boats. :P
