Player Vaults and Stashes

  • What do you scurvy sea dogs think of this: How useful and/or interesting would it be if players were able to build vaults and bury stashes, with the ability to place an X or other useful icon depicting locations of such things on the ships map or on a mini map in the quest radial?

Since we already have access to a spade, surely it makes sense that we should be able to bury a stash of treasure. Perhaps sensing you’re about to get robbed by that incoming Galleon, you bury a mound of treasure to return to later, and then disappear until the danger has passed. Perhaps if you leave the server, a quest map of your stash could spawn in several places, giving other players the opportunity to reap what you’ve sown?

Another thought I’ve had is that it would be useful for players to have access to or be able to build their own vaults. A permanent place where they can stash loot until another play session.

    Any thoughts?

  • You can stash your loot permanently by cashing it in at the appropriate trading company. There is no point in stashing it anywhere else unless you are trying to create a way to circumvent the risk/reward structure that currently exists.

You can always hide it on an island but risk the chance of it being found or getting merged away to another server.

  • I don't really know what I'm talking about here but wouldn't this be quite a resource hog on servers that are already struggling and are dealing with crossplay limitations?

We already gotta be a nose hair away to render to islands fully and can't expand the map due to the limitations I don't see how adding to ability to dig holes and build anywhere wouldn't put a ridiculous load on limited abilities that are needed to keep up performance

and on top of that I dunno if it's really necessary in a session based game revolving around cashing in and exiting out

  • Thought about this since the first day I started playing, I really think it makes sense and should be implemented in the game, it's just such a pirate thing to do.

Despite what some people say and think, you sometimes lose your ship or crew and need to bury treasure so you can come later and take it back and sometimes you sneak on an enemy ship to take some treasure and then you need to bury it so you can retrieve it later.

That’s a fair point regarding cashing out. I get that the risk of losing it all is a massive part of the game, it just seems a little unfair that my “hidden” treasure glints and gleams for all to see, even through the bushes. Perhaps I just need to get better at finding hiding places. But, If I was able to bury it for the duration of my session (when I leave it either disappears or turns into a stash other players can hunt for) or until I can return within that session, it would seem a little fairer to me. Of course there would be risk in taking time to dig a hole, fill it with treasure and then refill the hole.

I think perhaps the permanent vault idea does try to circumvent the risk/reward system a little too much. But if they were session based perhaps they could be crackable or burgled by other players.

I agree, I respawned from the ferry of the damned a while back (I was taken out by a skele ship), to find my ship was going down. All my treasure popped out but I noticed a row boat on a tiny little island near by. I used that boat to gather my treasure and sailed around in circles for days looking for an outpost. I feared leaving out in the open on the island invade it was seen glinting away by a passing ship. It would have been so much more piratey if I could’ve buried it 😁

  • @wolfmanbush I totally get what your saying. I lost connection to the server last night and have received Allmondbeard errors frequently.
The game is massive, and there is a huge amount of things to do and see. Sorting server issues is definitely way more important than Rare fulfilling my little treasure goblin fantasies. But hypothetically, server issues to one side. Would you like to be able to bury treasure and know that it’s not glinting away for all to see? Just miffs a bit that even stashed in a bush my treasure gives off that tell tale glow or glint.

A big part of the game is having ships sailing around with loot on board. It creates tension when you're carrying it because you don't want it stolen, and it gives other ships a reason to check out, steal from or attack other boats. This is further exemplified by the emissary system which actively encourages loot hoarding by increasing your flag grade (and thus giving you an increased bonus when cashing in) when you put loot on your ship.

They are never going to introduce a system of hiding treasure off-ship because it would be in direct opposition to those design goals.

  • I would like to pivot and say that I would like to see them implement some sort of crew social area that we can customize and purchase "things" for.
Maybe similar to the Pirate Legends area.

  • @d3adst1ck fair point.
