Pirate legend weapons - a letter to the developers

  • Dear Developers and Pirates,

Currently I am PL, I have lvl 17 in Athena and 44 in Sea Dogs and I'm in the process of grinding up to 240 wins in the arena to unlock legendary weapons, but ...

240 wins, with the lack of further support for the arena mode announced by the developers, seems unrealistic.
Yes, I know that you had previously planned to reduce the amount of wins needed, but after opposition from players who got this award, you withdrew from this idea.

Let's look at it objectively though, this idea was a year and a half ago, when the arena mode was still being developed and supported.  Currently, very few players play it, and companions leaving before the fight starts (or before the lobby starts), it's happening in almost every game. Which force you to exit the lobby, log in again (because you cannot interrupt this while searching for a match, and the chance that someone will come to you during the match is negligible), wait for the next game, which drives me crazy.  As a result, playing one game takes up to 30 minutes.
Assuming a victory in 1/3 of the games (I think I'm quite good), it gives us almost 400 (!) hours of grinding in the arena (sick!) to get the title...

According to Google, only 0.36% of players have achieved the title of a legend of piracy.  How many of these players have achieved the Legendary Sea Dog title?
In the current mode, gaining this title is almost a miracle...

The launch of the new season is a good time to make some changes. That is why I propose:

    1. Reduction of the number of winnings to 120/160. Still only a few players will get this title;
    2. Gradual: given weapon for reaching a given level: 60 wins = cutlass, 80 = flintlock, 100 = blunderbuss, 120 = eye of reach, or something like that;
    3. Special, unique prizes for those who have achieved the required 240 wins so far?

I hope you, dear Developers, will consider my suggestions.  If not, I'll go crazy.  Me and many other players who are trying to get pirate legends weapons in the current state of the arena ...

Pirates, please support me or leave your suggestions.  Let's do something about it before we all go crazy...

    Best regards,
    Skobel1337

  • If they ever decide to change the amount of wins needed then those that has done it the REAL way should get something exclusive showing that you actually grinded through it.

  • I disagree, As someone who plays arena pretty much every day, getting a match to start (assuming you are talking about sloop arena) only takes about 5-10 minutes, usually with 4-5 ships.

Not very difficult, its grind, but honestly I think it actually takes less time than that of the athena grind, part of your issue is that you are only winning 1/3 of your games, you also failed to incorporate, the fact that as you win your games your win rate will improve. Perhaps it will take you around 300 games.

It is not an easy commendation, but it is one of the few that truly show a good PvPer

  • As much it be nice for them to reduce the wins needed for LSD in Arena, I disagree with you on this as you shouldn’t be able to get things that easy in a game like sea of thieves which is a sandbox that has many goals known as commendation which many people choose to set themselves to do if they want unlock a certain item of their desirable needs.

Each commendation is supposed to take good amount of time to complete and give another reason why people keep playing and grinding for the things they want and brag about their achievements and share many tales of what happened during their grind.

Reducing the amount of wins for LSD would start a huge wave of rage and feeling robbed from the amount of time they put into the game,

I understand as it is getting harder to find games in Arena and the mode is getting fully abandoned by the Devs as there is no reason for them to waste their money on a mode that only have roughly 3% of the playerbase, my best advices for you is too keep on the grinding for it like I am at the moment before it becomes far too impossible to get it and make sure you have cosplay on if you not getting any lucks

  • I doubt they will ever change this now, but it would have been a good idea to give out the weapons in stages vs everything at the end in my opinion. I think this possibly would have kept more people playing and motivated to get to the 240 if they got rewarded for the wins along the way.

  • @skobel1337

Just because arena isn't getting support doesn't mean you can't get the wins.

Its actually easier for you to get wins now then it was back then. Originally the games were longer and you could lose completely depending on spawn locations right at the start.

Now you got half the lobby going off and doing TDM leaving you completely available to grab the chest and just sit and wait for the win.

In the past year I won over 450 or so arena matches. Thats almost double the requirement and I didn't even play all that much last year only really started playing it again near the end of the year.

Get a good partner and learn to PvP properly.

Best advice I can give you??

Avoid leaving your boat. Boarding might seem like the "it" move but its not. I've won almost the past 60 to 100 matches straight by my crewmate and I never leaving the boat.

With the way boats take damage now you don't ever actually need to leave. The most important part of this tactic is having a good helmsman. Someone who knows how to drive and how to put the boat into a death spiral without over rotating. Once you got that you are solid.

Good driving, land your cannon shots. GG

  • If it's too much of a "grind" for you then why bother with it? It's just another cosmetic that you will probably hardly ever use. Really you should probably only play Arena if you enjoy it, I'd like to think that's true of the majority of players that achieve this milestone.

  • @skobel1337 "Yes, I know that you had previously planned to reduce the amount of wins needed..."
Ok...that's new...when did they say that?

  • @schwammlgott https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/legendary-sea-dog-commendation-update Thank god they didn't do it.

  • @Skobel1337 Everyone who has the Legendary Sea Dog Weapons worked hard to get them. Just because you don't want to put in the effort doesn't mean you should get them more easily. I'm in the process of grinding to get Athena 20 but don't enjoy doing it very much. However I'm not asking for it to be made easier.

  • These weapons are the ONE concession to the PvP side of SoT, and are a legitimate reason to maintain Arena.

I know I can get the wins I need If I join a Teamspeak or Discord crew, there are tools I can use.

Please don't neuter the weapons into weaksauce.

Did you see the date? June 5th 2019...
Actually the achievement is 100 wins, and that's all I care about...still need 19 to go, if I find the motivation, but I don't care for the cosmetics, as I prefer the silver blade weapons anyway

  • I honestly understand the sentiment !
I started recently to play arena with grinding this commendation myself.
Honestly getting the wins is not that difficult so far. My issue with this mode at the moment is more that it can be really boring when playing with TDM'er in the game. Yesterday evening at most I had one other ship playing the game as intended.
I hope that the Private servers will help in that regard.

  • @schwammlgott Yes I did see the date... And yes I realise how long ago that was but I believe that does count as previously planning to change it even though they changed their mind. Also when you say the "achievement" do you mean Legendary Sea Dog or the 100 wins xbox achievement?

  • I see a lot of replies, how easy it is to get 240 wins.

I can see some tips for me, thank you. I've been playing this game for a few years now and trust me, I'm not a noob.

To clarify my point of view: I have one question: in the current state of the arena, have you tried to find a match playing on Xbox only with players playing on controllers, being a player living in Europe (like I am)?

Almost every lobby is with the same few plyers.

Try it, then you will understand what I meant by assuming this topic.

@sot-player30, I'm also grinding to 20 lvl and I think it's boring becouse a lack of ways to do it. And not whining about it.

But I still think getting 240 wins at arena at it's current state, playing on Xbox, is almost inpossible to reach.

  • @sot-player30 the xbox achievement is what I mean...just saw, you're not the op, so I guess that belongs more to him
    @Skobel1337

Also the legendary sea dog is a commendation, not the achievement, by the way

  • As someone who grinded the 240 out with 250 ping I hope it never gets changed

  • As someone who can happily refuse i say the weapons will one day be available in Adventure Mode.
At least when Arena finally get's shut down.
I say 2022 or even before.

Not to belittle you or anything but this comment right here

To clarify my point of view: I have one question: in the current state of the arena, have you tried to find a match playing on Xbox only with players playing on controllers, being a player living in Europe (like I am)?

    Excuses.

My crewmates play on xbox and they have no trouble winning in cross play servers. I have one crewmate who solos in arena and wins in cross play servers on xbox.

Not all PC players are super gods and just because someone has M&K doesn't mean that you automatically lose.

Like I mentioned, you don't actually have to leave the ship and its actually better if you don't. Controlling the ships, using the cannons, basically anything NAVAL related is easier to do on the controller anyways.

"I'm on controller and xbox servers blah blah" - Yeah no. Stop making excuses. Get better at the game and overcome. Other players do it ALL the time.

Whats funny is if you really are on Xbox then finding a crewmate for Arena should be easy and you could play with someone from America. You might have to play with a slight lag but it should be no more than 120 or 150 ping which is completely manageable.

Sorry, but you might not be a "noob" but you make excuses like one.

  • Still slowly on my way to those legendary weapons.
I only get to play every now and then, and even less frequent with my usual crew, who among us, are all useless at 1v1 combat, but deadly on our ship if we keep people off of it.
Not really experienced any issues any worse than normal in getting matches to load. We will all get there eventually. And by only playing a few games now and then, we all still love a good arena session, win or lose.

  • Stop trying to make these weapons easier to get. People want them because they are hard to obtain, and they provide an incentive to keep players logging into Arena. It's no more difficult to get into matches than it was before they announced the end of development for Arena. I've probably logged around 80-100 wins in the last month and a half just by playing on weekends for a few hours.

  • I disagree with you, I already got my 240 wins and I just want to clear out that my disagree is not related to thought like "if you want to have it work as hard as me, lowering the wins would make it unfair for people like me who had to grind for double the time".

I've told this story many times already, but I'm willing to tell this again:
The way I got my 240 wins was very simple, me and friend have played a bunch of time together and started noticing some sinergy. We weren't good at the time tbh, we were the typical barely decent PL that thinks he's experienced just because he played a lot to get there. So, I've been wanting legendary weapons for a while now and tried some open crew Arena games (the old one) to see what would happen. I did get some wins but it still was kind of hard (we all know what dealing with open crews in gelleons arena feels like), so I asked my new friend about playing some duo arena and he told me he also wanted to get the legendary weapons. So we decided to get better and so we forced PvP for the next weeks to improving inspired by the upcoming Competition of Courage combined with sloop Arenas and Arena 2.0 (which really made farming the commendation faster).

Winning in arena doesn't require to be good since there's no real matchmkaing based on skill, you just need to be better than the other players in the lobby.
Gotta say we really made a good choice deciding to play sloop Arena, way more balanced and enjoyable than Galleon's Arena, you also are more in control of the game.
So, even tho we weren't that good at this time, we still were better of the majority of the players we were doing very good. We also discovered how easy ti was to farm points on ships with very bad/not full crews but decided to avoid that to focus on getting good. We had quite some free time in that period so we did set ourselves a 10 wins per day goal, wouldn't log off until we got those (which takes about 3 hours). We actually got 10 win a day barely losing any at all actually. We were really into it at first, at the end of each game we were discussing META, strategies to try, which on did or didn't work and why, our attitude really made improve quickly. Initially we were doing a 10 games win streak per day because 1) a lot of new players were joining th Arena because of the Competition of Courage; 2) Because the first days of a new mode are always the one were the players who adapt fast to and come up with good strategies usually win, and we were really into it. But at the end of you 240 wins voyage we were getting 10 wins a day because of all our experience, we were completely different players.

I got very good with aiming the cannon while curving, from far away, when and where to shoot, my aim improved and my decision making on boarding got exponentially higher day by day. Knowing when and how to board, how to deal with the situation adapting in real time, which weapon to use, when to use it and how. While my friend (if my job was primarily to take down other ships/keeping them unoperative by boarding, getting the chest/selling it and clearing outposts; my friend's job was to keep the ship from sinking, always giving me the best angle to shoot while positioning the ship out of enemy range, harpooning the chest with or without me and firing cannons while I was not on the ship) improved his decision making about the ship positioning, he really learnt how to efficiently manouver the ship, how to prevent other players to board the ship, how ti distract the enemy to make a chance for me to board, and as me he improved his aim, overall PVPing and shooting with cannons aswell.

It was quite a journey, we could make it one month by playing 3 hours every day but everyone could do the same by playing just 1-3 games a day (HOW much you play every day doesn't really matter, just do it regularly. During my life I was studying for school as well as having a part-time job, while having very little time for my hobbies, I got from Diamond 5 to Diamond 1 in league of legends by playing just 1 game each day, 2 if the first ended quickly. Perceverance, effort, mindset and constancy are very important factors, way more than just the amount of hours you play), just find a good partner that you can trust and play regularly with him on sloop Arena.

The day we got the weapons we bot had a very good feeling, all the time we spent improving felt worth. We didn't just play to get some cosmetics, that journey also really changed us as players which made "Legendary Seadog" feel like the wortihest commendation to grind for. Most of the grindy commendation are just hollow, what's left for you when you get those grindy achievement? Felt nothing for Athena 20, "Sailor of Athena's Fortune, "Legendary Merchant Trader", nor for unlocking the full ghost set, they are just titles I have and they mean nothing to me. "Legendary Seadog" is a title I'm proud of, not beacause it was hard, sooner or alter you will get it regardless of your skill level, I was proud because it reminded me of that one month and a half journey that made me the pirate I am today.

To clarify my point of view: I have one question: in the current state of the arena, have you tried to find a match playing on Xbox only with players playing on controllers, being a player living in Europe (like I am)?

I don't quite play Arena anymore but I occasionally do a bunch of games. Unfortunately I'm on PC, so I can't really talk for Xbox, but I am from Europe and my today's 4 games streak is clearly up to date with the "current state of Arena". Sloop lobbies are quick as they've always been, if you feel like you're are waiting too much just turn on crossplay, SoT's average player is not on a decent level of skill anyway.

If you are gonna hate it just stop trying, it won't be worth. No matter how much time it will take, make sure to enjoy your journey to Legendary Seadog and it will be worth it, no matter the months passed.

  • Is not a bad idea, but i think if rare use this implement be lvl 50 to get these weapons

  • I think the pirate legend weapons should be detached from the Arena altogether. It's senseless to lock those weapons behind Arena wins, when many of us can't stand Arena and don't play. This is more true than ever now that support for Arena has been cut. It's clear the experiment failed. Please provide a way for the vast majority of us who hate Arena and will never rack up 240 wins to acquire the legendary weapons. I don't much care what you lock it behind, or how grindy it may be, as long as it's in Adventure, not Arena. It's not an unreasonable request.

  • There is absolutely no reason to move anything that's tied to arena commendations to adventure. If they get rid of the arena the cosmetics should remain only for those who earned them, just like everything from previous patches that are now unavailable.

  • @genuine-heather The fact that support for Arena has been cut doesn't mean Arena is unplayable or will get deleted. It feels like an excuse for people that do not like arena/can't get the wins; Arena is still there, you can still play it and Sloop Arena is still fairly balanced, it won't get updated but it's playable.

I think the best solution to make every one happy would be moving the legendary weapons to the Arena shop and call them "Legendary Seadog WeaponName", then make a new weapons set called like current Legendary weapons and tie it to Athena commendations. This way PLegends get a new set of weapons, can complete the Legendary set 100% without playing Arena and the current Legendary Set will remain as it was intended to be: something tied to Arena.

I didn't like doing cargo runs, but I've done a lot of them to complete the commendation that gave me the legendary pocket watch and spyglass; didn't ask devs to change it.

  • @pellahh I agree this achievement is unfair and I'm not going to waste 3 months of my life trying to get it.

  • @one-eyed-curly What makes you think we will never use it. Also what makes you think it is ok to waste months of you life for a gun skin. Rare fix this.

  • @genuine-heather I agree why do I have to play with people who destroy me and are toxic to unlock the only good weapon set

  • @swiftthatch

Also what makes you think it is ok to waste months of you life for a gun skin.

No say it's ok to waste hours for those skins, in fact I don't feel I wasted them. I enjoyed my time in Arena and got better, working to get this commendation made me know a friend that I played a lot with, made me get better at the game and feel accomlpished with my wr in Arena, when I got it I didn't feel like I wasted my time.

Getting the gold curse is a waste of time. Took me less time than farming 240 wins but didn't feel as meaningful: didn't get better at the game, didn't learn anything interesting, it wasn't even fun doing the same Tall Tales over and over. That's wasting time.

Didn't get any particular feelings when getting to Athena 20, I've done the same stuff over and over, it got so boring I legit didn't want to farm Athena more than once per month, so I waited for double gold events and farmed Athen only during these. That was a waste of time.

Legendary Seadog? Nah, it was worth it and I still consider it one of the most meaningful Titles you can have in the game. Making it easy to get would make it less meaningful, not for who already got it, it would actually become a waste of time for some cosmetics instead of an improvement journey it is right now.

  • @swiftthatch
If you think it's a waste of time to get the weapon skin then simply don't. Asking to make it easier for you to get them is the real unfair thing here.

Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.

  • @lukadra its the only good weapon set in the game thats why i want it

  • @swiftthatch its top 5 sure, only good set, nah I can think of better looking items for each slot.
