SoT alienates most gamers and encourages griefing and toxicity

  • I'm sure this will rile up all the try-hards here.

I played SoT back in the early Alpha (and much later, the Beta) but recently decided to give it another try now that there's actually content in the game. Sadly, almost all of the major concerns I had then still apply now, and I quickly remembered why I never bought the game.

First of all, I really love a lot of things about the game and I'd love to play through the content and experience it. Unfortunately, that won't happen because I spend all my time getting griefed by a bunch of 12-year-olds.

Of course it's fun to do some ship combat now and then, but it gets really obnoxious and frustrating when you are trying to do anything else.

There is a massive section of gamers that just want to enjoy a game and it's content, especially with their friends, without getting greifed and constantly cussed out by angsty, insecure pre-teens. However, SoT alienates these players by specifically curating and encouraging a toxic community and game.

"It's a pirate game and that's what pirates do!!!!" I'm guessing you don't really know much about real pirates and what they were like. Also, its a video game, the idea is to make it fun. This excuse would be like activision making a CoD game that actually gives you PTSD and then you get on the forums and yell at anyone criticizing it: "real soldiers get PTSD so that's why the game does!!! Get gud!!!!" Think about it.

"Get gud!!" You clearly don't understand that some people simply don't enjoy or want to play pvp, particularly in a system that makes it so easy to repeatedly be killed by the same people (not to mention being at a major disadvantage if you don't have three friends or want to play with rando's). I don't have the time, energy, or desire to play this game enough to "get good", nor do I enjoy filling my crew with random obnoxious teens.

"Go find a new game, then!!!" Yes... that's what I'll be doing. Just lamenting that solo players and PvE fans can't enjoy an otherwise great game.

"It's not griefing, it's just the game" It IS griefing and that's my point. The devs made griefing a core mechanic and that's the problem.

It's truly a shame that the developers decided this was the only way they wanted the game to be played, rather than allowing options. Online gaming is toxic enough as it is, it shouldn't be forced onto gamers by developers.

So, my feedback + suggestion to the devs: If you want to increase the player base, make it more enjoyable to more people, and reduce toxicity then

    1. add protections for players who don't enjoy pvp like a PvE server (if they have arena, why not PvE?)
    2. Or, some kind of non-combatant mode where enemy players can't attack you or interact with your boat or things
    3. Or, at the very least, some kind of system that marks anyone who has recently killed other players on the map so they can more easily be avoided and put a bounty on them so other players seek them out and thus keep them too busy to grief. Add to the bounty with the more people they kill. Possibly slightly slow down their ship when they have a bounty to let others flee, and force them to continue fighting anyone chasing the bounty.

Do I really think the devs have the time, resources, or care enough to make these changes? No. I wish they did. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised one day. But I don't see it happening, which is why I sadly can't stick with this game, like the many, many other players who quickly realize what this game is. Such a shame.

  • Its not the Game, its gamers and their questionable idols on Twitch etc.
You cannot control it by artificially constructed rules, gamers gaming Systems will always find loopholes, only thing you can do is to spoil their so called playstyle.
But this Rare doesnt want because of the money

  • Another "I get attacked every time i get in the game" thread...

  • First off, I would say that claiming your point view is automatically the same as "most gamers" is problematic.

furthermore, the game has only ever been pvpve and there has never been a crew size of 1 (the only exception being the maiden voyage). If that kind of games is not the kind of game you like why even bother with it? You said yourself you never bought it.

If you are looking to play a solo game that is purely pve I would reccomend finding an rpg you enjoy.

If you are looking for a game to play with friends I would reccomend finding a co-op game, or even breaking out the character sheets and dice roll programs for some socially distanced fun on discord.

Every game isnt for everybody. That is perfectly fine. I generally dont enjoy jrpgs or mobas, for instance. But, I dont think they should change dota or final fantasy to suit my personal tastes. Saying that a game you dont like should be overhauled to become a game you do like is, well, I dont really know what to call it. It's like ordering a cheeseburger and sending it back because it has cheese on it.

  • @eavega omg...another one...cry me a river...

  • @eavega If you were even remotely correct SOT would have died out 3 years ago, and would not be steadily growing and pumping out new content.
Move along please, and throw your tantrum elsewhere.

  • "It's a pirate game and that's what pirates do!!!!"** I'm guessing you don't really know much about real pirates and what they were like. Also, its a video game, the idea is to make it fun. I found this a little bit amusing, it's like he's equating the truma he experience being bested in a video game to how soldiers feel after having been to war and that this game is worse than other similar games like COD in that regard. I guess in a way this could be seen as a testament to how engaging and amursive this game can be.

  • There is a mega thread for burying this dead horse of an arguement.

This guy knew nearly three years ago what SoT entails.
Just think of the cool time limited swag he could have had that some of you pirates will never get to earn.

He didn't get it then, he don't get it now.

  • Please leave

  • @barnabas-seadog Luckily we dont see these whiny postsas much, mega threads really did wonders as ive predicted.

  • @eavega

"It's a pirate game and that's what pirates do!!!!"

You start about reality, while nothing in this game is about the reality of pirates. It is a pirate fantasy game, an open world PvEvP environment where all the tools are given to one to be the pirate they want to be. As stated in the Code of Conduct: Be a good sport. Sea of Thieves is a pirate game, and stealth, stealing and battles are all part of the fun. All pirates on the seas accept that, but be a good sportsman in both victory and loss.

Fantasy pirates board ships, battle, have naval combat, steal loot, dig up treasure etc. and all of these elements together is what makes it a pirate game. You are playing a pirate, not a merchant or treasure hunter.

Which brings us to your next argument.

    "Get gud!!"

Yet you fail to understand that this statement does not mean you need to learn to fight. You have alternate options available to you, simply having awareness, good seamanship means you can literally avoid ever needing to use your weapons. If you do not have the time, energy or desire to learn to play the game... then that simply means you do not want to play the game. Being good at the PvE playstyle, being solo, avoiding conflict, negotiations still means you have to learn to play the game. What is the next step, you fail at defeating the kraken and then the game needs to remove that as well, because you have no desire to learn to play the game? If you have no desire to learn and play the game, then simply don't.

Also there are ways to finding a crew of like minded people, tools like the forums, discord and LFG allows you to speak to the people you play with before you enter the game. Once again this simply shows that you have no interest in playing an online multiplayer PvEvP game which is what this game is. The moment anything takes a bit of effort, you simply want the game to change it to your need. In games you lose or you win, they aren't a movie that is setup to be passively enjoyed... you have to take action and control.

"It's not griefing, it's just the game"

Killing you, sinking you, stealing your treasure are not griefing. This is a PvEvP multiplayer game... meaning that we risk anything we bring along on our trips, if you want to mitigate loss you have to sell more frequently and you are showcasing your true colors here:

Online gaming is toxic enough as it is, it shouldn't be forced onto gamers by developers.

Yet you bought an online multiplayer game... not every game in the world is a single player experience, just like not every single player is a multiplayer experience. It seems that you simply do not understand what game you bought and demand the games you buy to morph and change to your liking, not considering any consequences it has for anyone else. Many people enjoy online multiplayer gaming, many players enjoy doing PvE and PvP and the sea of thieves is a combination of all these elements and have been very clear on what they crafted.

  • It's not the game that encourages griefing, it's the individual player that decides what to do. Its a sandbox game so you can choose whether or not to be friendly or aggressive. There aren't any incentives to attack a ship without any loot, so most players wont attack ships with no loot on unless the are doing it for fun or are inspired by "competitive" twitch streamers to sink every ship they see. I've met a lot of friendly ships and made lots of alliances, in my experience only about 10% of ships are immediately aggressive.

  • There is not much to say that others havtn already.
It is a pvpve game, and getting attacked and sunk is part of it. There is no "only pve" and it would ruin the game by making it stale and boring, making players leave.

However one point you brought up kinda sounded like a neat idea for a bit. The bounty system. I know it has been asked of plenty before.
Having a bounty system could make others try and find them, however marking them and making them slower is an unfair bonus jsut so you can enjoy your game, if you palyed alpha and beta you should know that sot is all about fair ground.
Then again, why have a bounty for one sink, there is reapers bones and repairs mark.
