Other players are brutal!

  • Too many times!
Too many times I have been minding my own buisiness before having my ship sunken.
Too many times I have left other ships alone, only to have them come back for me later.
Too many times I have been chased all the way across the seas and back by what I have nicknamed a bully boat.
Too many times I've respawned to the sound of cannon balls smashing my ship to sawdust.
    I am LOSING MY MIND!
I have expressed this concern to the devs before, and I was assured that the seas aren't that bad. But this has yet to be proven to me. Maybe I'm unfortunate, or maybe I just suck at the game, but the game is nearly more stressfull than it is fun. I get that the game needs PvP, but not everybody is a PvP God, I know I'm not, just ask the ferryman.
If he doesn't feel like talking, ask the bully boat that ran of with my hard earned lv5 gold hoarder emmisarry flag and 13 captains chests. That was nearly an hour wasted.
I know the theme of the game is literally piracy, but I can't fight back! I have practiced in the Seadog's arena, in fact, I'm almost a "captain of silvered waters." But PvP is just not a strongsuit of mine.
I just want the game to be a little kinder to players like me. Call me a hippie, a panzie, or a noob, call me what ever, but don't say this hasn't happened to you before!
I don't know what could be done about this. Maybe Solo sloopers could have some sort of npc crewmate that stays on the boat, or maybe a fourth boat type, smaller than a sloop, and easier to hide. I don't know, all I know is something needs to change.
Haveing to post this is almost embarrasing, the least you devs could do is, PLEASE HEAR ME OUT.

  • There are intense servers but it's just not as common as people make it seem

The more players that there are the more inexperienced pirates there are to spread out making servers less and less likely to be filled with killers.

When solo stick close to the boat or imo stay on the boat entirely and just loot up megs skelly ships and fleets. Then it largely prevents tucking and people sneaking up on you

If you want to make some gold sometime let me know and we can go kill something but no complaining about brutal seas and keep the boat repaired

  • @altomrawesome Couple of issues with your biased characterization of the events you described. First off, NO ONE BULLIED YOU. You were attacked in a game with PVP and unless they were harassing you or repeatedly singling you out, then there was no bullying. Second, running ANY Emissary flag is WILLINGLY putting a target on your back. Greater rewards for greater risk. And certainly there was no bullying in that instance. Here's a free tip - don't carry more loot than you are comfortable losing.

Playing solo is the "hard mode" of the game and needs to be approached differently. It certainly isn't for everyone and you need to adapt a different mindset and skill set. I say this as a Legend who got there solo 99% of the way so I have some experience. You have to be more aware of your surroundings (since it is only you), park out of sight lines and what I refer to "trade routes" (sections of the seas where ships are more likely to travel) and definitely do not spend too much time in one place - that will kill you more than anything. Sell often and there is no disgrace in fleeing an encounter if you feel you can't win (or just don't want to waste time or fight), just learn the strengths of your ship and the weaknesses of those you may come up against. Finally, use communication as it is your most powerful tool and can defuse a lot of situations. And I find voice is a better tool than text or pirate chat, especially when trying to judge other's intentions.

Flying a grade V emissary and hauling around a lot of valuable loot is just asking for trouble. It's Sea of Thieves. You're advertising the fact that you've got lots of loot available for stealing.

I understand and sympathize with the fact that raising an emissary produces a lot more loot and reputation. But that bonus comes with a risk. You're painting a bullseye on the side of your ship. That makes you a far more attractive target, and even makes you visible on the map to grade V Reapers. My crew and I aren't that aggressive (usually) but we're far more likely to attack a ship flying a nice long emissary flag. If you look like a noob we'll probably leave you alone, unless you attack first.

There are lots of things you can do to mitigate your risk. Not flying an emissary flag is one of them. Sell your loot often. Keep your eyes on the horizon and always know where the other ships are. Be prepared to run or fight at all times. With time, practice, and experience, you'll get better at protecting your ship and your loot.

I know Sea of Thieves can be stressful at times, but that's part of the experience. Don't let yourself get too attached to things. This game's all about the adventure.

You seem like you might be a relatively new player (I'm basing this off your forum rank, so don't take it personally if I'm mistaken), so let me offer some constructive advice.

You shouldn't run an emissary unless you're willing to attract other players. Yes, you'll get more money and rep for your loot, but (as @Genuine-Heather mentioned) other players will want to sink you to take your flag since it's worth a lot for the reapers.

Solo slooping is essentially hard mode; ships that have more players on board will have an inherent advantage over you. It's not insurmountable, but you might have more fun sailing with a crew. Try hitting up LFG sites to find other players.

Keep your head on a swivel and don't let other ships approach you. Sell your loot often so you don't end up loosing hours of work. Even so, loot is pretty easy to come by and 13 captains chests only amounts to roughly 10-15 k gold; that's less than what you'd get for completing a standard skull fort. You'll get more treasure in short order.

Finally (and this is the most important): try not to take this game so personally. Yes, another ship sunk you, took your stuff, and made you feel bad. It happens to everyone. Rather than focus on your bruised ego, try to devote your energy to figuring out what you could have done differently. Could you have used other tools at your disposal, such as chain shot or cursed cannonballs? (I have a guide here, if you want advice on that front). Could you have avoided them by sailing into a storm, or the devil's roar? Did you try boarding them to slow them down?

Hope this helps, and good luck on your future adventures!

  • The bullying reference is refering to those that actually do come back repeatedly. I suppose I should scan the horrizons more often. And yeah, I know emmisarying is dangerous, I think I mentioned it just because I was annoyed with it.
You are right, and maybe what I'm hoping for is unrealistic. But no matter of practice has ever allowed me to escape other players before.

  • @altomrawesome Once you have that emissary flag on your ship, you pretty much have to be ready to fight at any given moment. and Yes people will attack you and sink you and steal your work, its part of the game.

It's very difficult to escape another ship by simply sailing away from them. If you want to escape a ship that's relentlessly pursuing you, your best bet is to sink them. They'll spawn somewhere else on the map, and they'll have to find you again before they can resume their pursuit. Plus, they'll most likely have fewer supplies if they track you down soon after respawning, which will make it easier to sink them again.

  • If you have an emissary flag, we will try to take it from you. Emissary flags are PvP beacons.

... also we like (others) loot. :)
