Ugly Islands

  • Hi there,
I am currently experiencing some bug I can't manage to fix, so maybe some of you can help.
I joined the sea only a month ago or so, and really am loving it, but for some days now my game doesn't quite look the same. Distant islands really got ugly..

Here are a few examples, looking at an island from an outpost (maybe those look normal, but i kind of see ugly shapes everywhere now, so i'm not sure)

and these captures are half way there, I would need to get even closer for models to just pop in:

Even the outpost right behind me already got mushy

    my system:
    Ryzen 9 3900x
    Rtx 2080 super
    32gb ram (3200hz)
and game files have a privileged position on my 1tb m2 ssd.
All of this is generally running in 4k at a consistent 60fps but i went down to 1080p and it didn't improve a thing..

    Anyone got a clue?

  • this has always happened to me since playing, i always thought it was because i dont have the best computer but tbh i think it might be to save memory? so that unloaded islands appear clunky and not as high-res to not put as much stress on yr computer. sometimes it takes longer for the island to load in once i approach it and it causes me to sink in through the ground until it loads and i spawn ontop of it. it might just be how the game is programmed and it loads faster/slower depending on the size of the island + yr computer.

  • I believe they reduced rendering distance to balance crossplay for consoles and different pc builds

  • yeah i can get that, but it was great until just a few days ago.. I also get that i don't have the latest shiny rtx 3000 series, but i'm still on an above average pc here, so it kind of bothers me when I see my girlfriend having a better game experience playing on my old pc (almost a decade old, and built on a budget)...

The only recent change to the system I can think of is the update of the graphics driver. It's a pretty new system and I hadn't installed the most recent driver (460.89) over the version 432.00 that comes with windows update.. I'm going to try to go back a few versions but don't really have high hopes here.

I welcome any other idea, thanks
