Feeling Depressed in game

  • Is it just me or is it kind of soul crushing to have spent 3 hours grinding loot just to have a galleon sink your duo sloop? What are all of you doing when you hop on? just want some ideas because grinding gold over and over again is getting boring.

  • Not really. Afterall, it just a video game and has no real connection to real life. So why should it?

It sucks yes, but "3 hours" worth of unturned in loot. That just called for you to be sunk. Could be worse, server crash, kraken, twin galleon/fleet.

  • @burnbacon hey uhhh.. think i asked what everyone was doing whenever they hop on for a 6 hours grind session

  • I switch back and forth between solo sloop and open crew brig

By myself I do fleets ashen lords megs skelly ships, visit with other sailors fight with hostile pirates

open crew brig I just hop a couple times till I get a person or two that will put in effort and listen to me when I tell them to not worry about anything other than keeping the ship repaired. Then we get a few hundred k worth of loot have a nice adventure and I try to get them turned in before we get ourselves in a pvp pickle that they won't be able to help me much with.

To me I never really get tired of sailing around alone or seeing new players willing to put in some effort earn themselves more gold than they have seen yet or will see in the near future. It leaves them with a positive experience and hopefully made their day a bit better in some way.

Then someday down the road the pups will grow to be ferocious and vicious sea wolves and will show me and my sloop no mercy

  • Just hopped on with my wife. We haven't bothered playing since shark hunter event... Got a basic gold hoarder voyage, went to the island and got killed a couple times and then our ship sunk. Really fun way to get back into the game! I really wish there was a newer person friendly server.

  • My Problem isn’t the Gold Grind or the Game itself! My problem is I’m purely overwhelmed when I log in! I have so much to do I’m completionist, I want every commendation unlocked some day! But I’m also casual gamer(not much time to play Xbox) and in the end it’s like don quixote an endless fight against Windmills every new month and content drop!

So I’m thinking what can I do Fishing? Emissary? Oh there new events? And so when I decided one thing to do, I get distracted! Like a FotD I need 40 Forts to complete and a few stolen Athena’s so I try to tucc there with an Rowboat, but after 3 years of play I’m not the best player and most time get wrecked, so my session ends with 0 progress(except a few nautical miles)!

  • @rtl-saint I usually let my crew mates decide. only cosmetics still locked for me are the sails related to the vaults. ive completed all xbox achievements and most commendations. I dont need gold/doubloons.

If I'm running solo I just sail around for shenanigans. Sometimes I go full hostile, sometimes I try and be sneaky, sometimes I try and teach people. I just try to have fun.

  • It can be a bit dispiriting, but there are a few things that I do to avoid that.

    1. Don't stack more than you are comfortable losing. In any three-hour session, there should be multiple occasions where it is only a brief detour to go to an outpost.

    2. Gold is easy to come by in the game. Even doubloons will come in a reasonably steady stream. What I mean is, losing a stack of loot isn't that big a deal in the medium term. The fun is the story you're writing by playing. Sometimes that ends in your pirate being sunk and out of pocket; it's all part of the ups and downs of their journey. I know it's not for everyone, but trying to think about it in that way is helpful, I've found.

In terms of what you can do... I mean, there is so much beyond grinding gold. Challenge yourself with the world events; seek out the hilarity that might come from them rather than worrying yourself overmuch about turning in all the loot. Explore the beauty world Rare have made. Go after the commendations. Combine the last two points by hunting down Umbra's Legends of the Sea Easter eggs (and enjoy rolling in your doubloons). I've had enjoyable sessions were I've just hung out at Shark Bait Cove (probably my favourite island) hunting, fishing, watching the stars, bashing skellies and vibing. Fishing can be a relaxing and low-stakes bit of fun if you don't feel like heavy action.

Thinking of it as a story about your pirate can help; give them a personality. E.g. mine likes to be fairly self-reliant (hence you'll usually find him solo-crewing a sloop) but really has a problem with skeleton ships; he will go out of his way to hunt down any that he spots on the horizon; the loot is just a bonus compared to the satisfaction of putting down the undead menaces. He's more chilled about megalodons, reckons that have as much of a right to the sea as the pirates, although secretly he thinks the title 'Hunter of the Ancient Terror' would suit his tastes.

What I'm trying to say is that, as a pretty new player, I'm impressed that there are a lot of ways you can inject variety into the game, lots of tools and events and entities you can use to write your own story. Grinding gold isn't the be-all and end-all.

I can’t tell if you are complaining about getting sunk and losing loot you held onto for too long, or you are trying to figure out what some of the rest of us are up when we play. I am just going to use your reply to @BurnBacon as a guide.

Our sessions are pretty chaotic. A couple of the people that I regularly sail with have short attention spans.

We load in. Stock the boat. Just a few minutes grabbing items from barrels and outfitting the ship. Then we set sail.

“Oh look, a rowboat!” So we stop at the inactive fort and grab a few more items along with the rowboat.

“I see a ship! Oh, just a skeleton ship. Well, let’s sink it anyways.” We sink the ship, grab the loot, and spot a shipwreck nearby. We grab the loot and more supplies from the shipwreck.

“I see a player galleon. They’re parked with their sails down too.” We approach as the other crew raises anchor and sails straight into the island. Several cannonballs later they are sunk and had just a couple of skulls. Maybe enjoy a PM lecture from the other crew about honor, fairness, PvE, basement dwelling, or whatever makes them feel superior.

“We should have joined the Reapers if we were going to do that.” We join the Reapers and sell off what we’ve found. We head out again with a vague purpose.

“What’s that music? Oh yeah... Meg... do we want to?” We decide to skip it and consider doing a Tall Tale again or slapping down a voyage.

“That galleon is headed this way.” Different crew this time. We fight and lose. They take our flag. We decide we want revenge...

We could go for several hours just wandering around, doing one thing or another. I personally enjoy focusing on a task and completing it. It is easier to do that when I am playing alone. Even then, I could spend a few hours taking opportunities as they come.

  • @rtl-saint

Why are you sailing around with enough treasure that if you lose it would be soul crushing?

In the end it is a game, loss is parts of it and it was your choice to not sell at any giving point during those 3 hours.

  • On the plus side, there is the Festival of Giving event on at the moment and one of the goals is to give away 50 treasure items... so you might have made progress in that, assuming you didn't just log out!?

I don't tend to hoard loot, 3 hours is a long time to go without turning in and you're really taking a big risk. This event and the goal I mentioned is the first time in a long time that I've hoarded loot and that was to give it away!

In the end though, as others have mentioned, it's just a game. Too many players focus on the gold. Loot will come and go, there is plenty of it, you might have lost big this time but you might win big another time.

  • @ghostpaw yea im just asking people what they are doing. Im sort of mad that i got sunk with all the loot but i accept it. they outplayed me. it would have been fairer if they were a sloop but i accept that they outplayed me.

  • If you have gotten your achievements for the 20 chests on board there is no reason to hold your loot for more than 45 minutes on your boat. Your just looking for some reason to lose your loot.
Skelly ship sinking you, Kraken, meg, your crew mate, or enemy players.

  • Oh I forgot...don’t forget the flotsam of barrels that has blk powder kegs that kills your crew mate looking out the front of the ship while your are at the map table.

  • @rtl-saint

Just depends on my mood. Often I grab a voyage from whatever company I feel like that day and do some adventuring. (Turning in my loot after every island or two. ;) )

Other times I'll just pick a direction and head out, searching for wrecks and washed up treasure.

Another of my favorite activities is to fill my supplies with cooked meat, cannonballs, cursed cannonballs, wood, etc. Then I kill myself and spend my whole time hanging out on the ferry, playing music and handing out goodies to visiting pirates.

There's other things like Meg hunting or trying to commit suicide in spectacular ways, but those are my main three. Of course, now that it's the Christmas season I'll be doing what I've done since year one of the game. Dressing up as Santa and giving out treasure to anyone I run across.

Honestly, I was a little disappointed when Rare started doing gift giving commendations. Kinda took some of the fun outta it for me.

  • In reference of what I am doing in game...I set a goal.
Going to finish my 1 achievement for merchants the other 2 are long term achievements 50 wood crates and 50 canon ball crates.
    Focus on Order of Souls.

    Complete tall tales...all done.
Complete current Bilge rat adventure...only 2 left...Shrouded ghost.
Level up trading companies to max..done.
    Reapers and Athenas max.. done.
    Complete reputations for trading Companies:
    Gold Hoarders completed.
Merchants in Progress...3 left to do.
Orders of Souls...4 left to do.
    Athenas....11 to do.
    Reapers...5 to do
Hunters call....just go fishing 35 out of 91.
Waiting til it’s the last thing to do.
Sea Dogs ...arena is my least favorite 6 out of 28...no one steady to play with.

Doing current daily event for festival of giving.
Missed out on 2 days of twitch drops. It’s the weekend and I’m busy.

  • Usually, we grab galleon, stock up on supplies and look for sloops that had been grinding for 3 hours because they have lots of valuables on them... and they are easy to sink ;)

  • Simple fix, sell more often so if they get sunk you just lose a few chests at most

  • I get it can be frustrating to spend a lot of time doing something only to have it taken away, i've been there. If i ever play alone or with a friend on a sloop, i never spend 3 hours hoarding loot. I sell as often as possible. Even selling to sea posts when possible. I know it's nice watching a ton of gold fill your account, but its better to sell often and not hoard. Especially if you don't like PvP.

  • when i get sunk with 1 hour or 90minutes loot ,i would keep playing but when it happens a second time while my playsession, i logg off thats sot.yes its a game but its not fun doin everything from the start again with thefeeling i could get sunk again.

  • I start and go pirate. I see someone!? i will check what he can donate. I see no-one? I will PvE or get a FOTD started. Or whatever commendation/rep one of the crew needs. But we always distracted by other ships.

We sell when we quit. So we actually fight with stacked loot. Incase we fail and u win. Well GG enjoy your presents.

  • @rtl-saint
Hello ,Sir. i fear you have a bit of a narrowed vision about this game. " Grinding" gold is not the way to play , because from the moment that grinding comes in , you have a very big chance to become burned out about this game.

Yes , Gold is needed to level up, not that levels matter because you don't get stronger by reaching a new level, but leveling is needed to become a Pirate Legend. And gold is needed to buy some cosmetics.

No , the real reason for this game is buy a map, set sail and go for your goal or just see what's coming towards you , AI or real persons... By using your Talents in Sailing, Shooting , Fighting and so on but also your own Personality in "Parlay" situations will define or alter the outcome of a journey.

Yes some shoot on sight , without talking as they are , sadly, in Party/Discord chat but some will talk . Some will verbally abuse you , as that sadly happens in everymultiplayer game and is also hard to beat as a developer, and others will converse with you and may make an Alliance ,fight you or just let you sail , some others will even help you or escort you.

So ,please for your own fun, don't grind . Play a Tall Tale if you don't encounter much action , but do not grind , because your love and liking for this game will " grind " to a halt...

One more thing , you don't speak of a Friend nor a crewmember so i think you did a Solo Sloop adventure ...Hmm, it's a free world of course but i would like to suggest that you start a sail with a crew in order to be able to play with more experienced persons that will teach you a thing or two...

If, you still like to play alone , than don't hoard too much on yer ship , the bigger the load the higher the risk to lose it all, cash in often on one of the seven , eight if you count the Reaper's Hideout , Outposts .

So try again and experience the game with yer Eyes , Ears and Heart .This is a sandbox game that has a lot more to offer than just grinding gold...

I wish you fair winds and a fun next Adventure , Sir.

  • I’ve never done a mission.

I have never found or dug up a treasure chest.

I have never solved a riddle.

I have never transported a chicken.

I’ve never done a Tall Tale.

    I have never fished.

I just log in, stock up the ship and let things happen organically.

I play with a different crew every session.

Ship to ship PVP is my favorite part of the game.

    I do world Events.

I sail Galleon exclusively via the XBOX LFG system.

I had no problem getting PL or making a ton of money or getting commendations or any of the other stuff people “Work” for. I just let it all happen naturally and not once have two sessions ever been the same!

  • a lot of people think im a noob with this post, its understandable but im fairly expirenced been playing since may ish of 2020, have legendary thief that i got solo with no allience, i win most fights but some are just impossible.

It is a game. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose... Don't sail the seas with more than you are willing to lose.

You will meet people that are simply more organized crew wise, better pirates, more lucky, etc. If you expect to always win, that means you expect everyone else to always lose. Be a good sport. It truly has little to do with being experienced or a noob.

  • Hey friend, I'm going to toss a few general thoughts and suggestions the way of this forum.

I'm going to start by saying one universal truth- this game is not about what you have.. its how you use it. It is a skill based game where everyone is on the same playing field with the same equipment (except you guys who use open crew- thats suicide). The only thing that makes a difference is how you use what you have. (BTW, I'm told LFG on the Xbox app is best- no personal experience though). Secondly- YOU WILL DIE! Its inevitable. Accept it, embrace it! Luckily though, it costs you nothing to respawn a character and a ship. And costs you 30 seconds to change servers if it happens too often.

Now, My crew are Reapers- through and through, whether we be on a sloop, brig or galleon. We have been playing together for over two years and we are very effective pirates and rarely lose fights. We sign on, load up, flag reaper, turn our hull and sails black, light our lanterns red and hunt other players in this order:
    -other reapers/pvp flagged ships
-people who have hoarded too much treasure (favorites)
    -flagged emissaries
    -ships with poor color designs
-you have a dog that I wanna pet

    • I see you twice in an hour
-anyone else who attacks me or gets too close.

Here are some proven tricks to avoid getting boarded, torched or blown apart by hunter crews like mine.*

-Keep your eyes on the horizon at all times. Watch your back like your life depends on it, because if you see a ship, they see you! And you may only get one chance to escape. Also keep an eye on your map! Know where the reapers are and plan your voyages accordingly.

-DO NOT ASSUME ANYONE IS FRIENDLY JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE- doesn't matter what flag is flying. There is nothing sweeter than watching a ship roll up to my crew yelling "I'm friendly". Heh, we're not!

-As the forums have already suggested, do not carry more treasure that youre happy losing- 3h of grinding... you ARE what I dream about while I snuggle with my Blackbeard plush toy at night. On the flip side, I have lost a level 5 reaper flag with the sea of thieves naval battle drops, along with two forts worth of loot simply because we got cocky. It stings.. I know... so avoid it! There's a always a bigger fish!

    • LEARN YOUR SHIP (big one) - Rare has put a lot of effort into balancing strengths and weaknesses of their ships and equipment. Go onto YouTube or forums and search for "SOT solo/duo sloop sailing tips and tricks" or whatever is applicable to your style- learn how to survive. hint sloop can outrun galleons, galleons can out maneuver sloops, you just need to know how! In this game, the greater tactician always wins. There are also tutorials on how to beat kraken, ghost ships and megs.

    • Don't be afraid to take some risks! Now, I'm not talking going ramming speed at a brig while full of treasure.. thats silly.. scout out a fort now and then. You'd be amazed how often forts are left to sit there. Go see if anyone is there, if not- try it out! Use your ships cannons or run around till you group the skeletons up and burn them (very effective solo). I have done countless forts by myself and profits are wonderful, especially when flagged.

-Be creative and daring! Being pursued by another ship while holding treasure? Use some sailing mechanics to drive by an outpost, grab a piece of treasure every time you pass and hop off the ship to turn it in- mermaid back, rinse and repeat! Soon enough, your pursuer will realize they're wasting their time. Even if they dont and you have your flag up still after turning everything in- turn that ship into an ATV and ram it up those sandy beaches so you can step right off to turn your flag in- you win!. Then pull out your banjo and serenade the broken dreams of your pursuers as they hack you apart in frustration- doesn't cost you a dime to respawn and rare will even give you a new ship!

One last item that I can suggest is that, in my experience, the more icons there are in the sky- the more players on the server. So if you see skull fort skulls in the clouds, chances are you will run into a lot of players. So if you're looking to do your own thing (grinding), maybe server hop to find a clear sky and less players.

As for things to do as solo- get neck deep into YouTube videos! The more tricks and tips you know in this game, the more fun it is, and the longer you'll survive! It is a gold mine for info on the SOT, use it!

    Anyways, hope this helps.

  • @burnbacon I'm sorry, but what? That's three hours of ones time down the drain, there. If you have a life outside the game, having nothing to show for that amount of time really can hit hard.

  • @ghost-of-rhyza This is open world game, that means there is no start or end. There is no reason to pile 3 hours of loot. Plus loot in this game is everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Every island, every shipwreck every underwater location, every meg, every skeleton ship, and every barrel drop in water has loot. There are quick quests if you want to. You can grab a sloop or row boat and simply go from island to island collect things and sell it to one of the seven outposts as you go.

  • @ghost-of-rhyza said in Feeling Depressed in game:

@burnbacon I'm sorry, but what? That's three hours of ones time down the drain, there. If you have a life outside the game, having nothing to show for that amount of time really can hit hard.

Then don’t hold on to three hours of loot. There are outposts scattered all over the place. Pick one and cash in periodically to mitigate your losses. Never carry enough loot on your ship that you would be motivated to post about it online if someone takes it from you.

Also, the reward was the journey, not the gold. That chapter of your pirate’s journey. Not every chapter is going to be about another triumph. Hopefully during the next chapter your pirate will make better choices.

  • I don't keep that much loot anymore, but it's more of the... 3 man brigs hitting me right after i spawn in that gets me. Or the lovely people who hit me with no loot, then message in game with their lovely insults and trash talking.

  • Before I got taken away by other games, I went crazy with anger and hate (That I still feel) and just started throwing myself at people.

This is the ultimate end of the road that people come to in this game. Sooner you get to it, sooner you will finally "Deal" with the game, I guess.

  • Just learn to either evade or to defend. Or hell, go on the offence and be a pirate!
Seriously man, there's a reason you're being targeted.
I've been solo slooping for years now and I can say in confidence I've only been sunk by other players 4-5 times. I've just learned basic tips like use blacked out ship cosmetics, turn off lanterns, stretch out my voyages to evade heavily populated areas.
    Just play smart, my man.
