RTX 3070 Performance

  • Hello. The problem is my RTX 3070 seem like underperforming in this game. I'm playing on 1920x1080 resolution, graphic options are all maxed. When I'm sailing I get like 200+ fps, but whenever I get to ANY outpost or big islands like Thieve's Haven, Shark Bait Cove etc. fps drops to 80-90 or even less. Changing grapics to Rare quality doesn't make any difference. But if I set it to Normal or Cursed I'll gain some frames. Also needed to mention that whenever I get 200+ fps my GPU load is around 100% but when fps is like 80-90 GPU load is around 70%. IDK if its driver problem or game optimization, I hope someone from Rare or just more experienced user will let me know what kind of problem is this.
    Here is my full specs:
    AMD Ryzen 7 3700x
Gigabyte RTX 3070 Gaming OC (driver ver. 457.30)
    2x8Gb DDR4 Kingston HyperX kit 3200Mhz
    Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro mobo
    Thermaltake toughpower PF1 650W
Game installed on Gen4 PCI-E 4.0 M.2 SSD (Steam version)
    Windows 10 Pro ver. 2004

  • @Lavrushakms Hi not sure what graphics level are you running, is this 1080p with things on Mythical ? Can you post screenshot ? However right out of the gate B550 motherboard is where you would need to get improvement. I have similar setup but I am running x570 because this game is memory intensive (not the amount of memory used but how much data it pushes through it) The best video card means nothing if you can not push enough data to it. Also check what speed your memory is running at.

BTW unless you have monitor that can handle 200 FPS running video card at that level is a waste.

  • @jadescissors32 Yeah i have all settings on mythical or whatever highest available. But changing options to Rare quality doesn't make any difference.
My memory runs at 3200MHz with 16-18-18-36 timings.
And yes I know it's a waste playing 200 fps at 60Hz monitor, I just finished upgrading my rig from like 2012 PC and I'll get 144Hz or 165Hz monitor later.

  • I have the same issues with my setup, I recently upgraded from a 1080 Hybrid to a EVGA 3070 Ultra and the game is now unplayable with no other changes. I have such immense lag and stuttering around the outposts that I can't sell loot at all. I play with my son on the same network and he has absolutely no issues with a much older build. Doesn't matter what in-game settings I choose it seems.

    Spec-
    X570
    AMD 3700X
EVGA 3070 Ultra on latest drivers.

  • @ghost-white It's not like me getting stutters that makes my fps to drop, it's like constantly on 70-90 at the outposts.
If you getting stutters like game is actually unplayable for you I'd check your driver. There are a lot of people on Nvidia forum complain about stutters in games after they update their drivers. If you are getting stutters not only in SoT maybe you should try to clean install 457.30 (that's what I'm using atm), no stutters for me in any game.

  • @lavrushakms That seems to have done the trick, I rolled back to 457.30 and so far haven't had a problem. I see now your issue is a little different. Thank you!

What does your RAM usage look like during this FPS drop? I don't have any dips below 100 FPS even at the outpost, but I am running DDR4 G.SKILL 2X16 3600Mhz.

  • @ghost-white Glad I could help, my RAM usage seems pretty normal - around 45-55% of total available (beside the game I have Google Chrome running with 4-5 tabs), cannot say exact number of RAM the game using at the moment, but there is no lack of RAM for sure.
I noticed that at the ingame daytime FPS is around 100 as you getting on your system, but at the night it drops to 80-90. I assume because of the torches and their lighting effects. Can you check what fps do you get at the nighttime?

  • @Lavrushakms I still think your partial issue is with using B550. I think you are filling up the channel. Try reducing things (Disable whatever background processes you don't need, check if you have background video enabled)
my setup is similar to @Ghost-White minus video card ( I am running RX580 at the moment since I waited for RX6800/6900 being sold) I don't get any frame drops around outposts.
    My specs:
    Ryzen 3700x
    2x16 GB DDR 3600
    Nvme Gen 4 Corsair
    x570 Asus
    Rx 580 with 8GB
Power Save in BIOS disabled, running with 4K monitor
