Board ropes / grappling hooks to board ship.

  • The issue is that this would give a distinct advantage to larger crews. Right now the only ways to board a ship is to use one of the two ladders (which is easily guardable by even one person), ramming (which is dangerous and risky for all involved), or a really lucky shot from a cannon (ultimate skill).

    Having boarding ropes or grappling hooks would make it way to easy to board and ultimately make defending ones own ship all but impossible in CQC.

    Even if the grappling hook would take up a weapon slot? Either sword and grappling hook or grappling hook and 5 shots. Sounds interesting.

    Four swords or gunpowder weapons against one are difficult circumstances to overcome as a solo as it is. Giving them an easy way to board on top of that only makes it worse.

  • As fun and silly as it would be I just don’t think they would ever be used. Boarding is crazy easy already

  • @mr-tickle5 4v1 isn't a winnable situation anyways. It takes 2 people to maintain the galleon and shooting cannons. So 2 players can board the ship. So 1 player has to navigate, pull up the anchor if dropped, use sails, use cannons, restock his inventory, bucket and repair while fighting off 2 pirates.

  • You can already use grappling hooks for boarding - simply get close enough to another ship, harpoon it, and then reel it in and/or lock the harpoon to get vlose enough to jump aboard. Once you have someone aboard, they can then use the opposing harpoon to grab allies from across your deck.

    4v1 is possible but certainly unlikely.

    Given that we agree on the difficulty of doing so then why woukd you introduce a mechanic that makes those scenarios more frequent?

    A solo sloop can currently do a decent job of defensively warding off larger crews due to there being only TWO consistent entry points to the ship.

    Grappling hooks removes that defensive advantage and puts all the strength in a larger crews favor.
