Shipwright Repairing Ships

  • Now, tell me. How many of you have spent months upon months, sometimes even YEARS trying to earn a cosmetic? I'm guessing a lot of you. After all, the game is purely cosmetic based.

Now, how many of you have FINALLY earned these cosmetics, and are extremely excited to use them. You decide, "Let's take these into the middle of the action to show them off, and get our ship famous!" So you find a reapers bones emissary, and after a long, hard battle, you finally sink them. You begin to celebrate, until you see the toll the victory has taken on your ship.

The hull is riddled with holes, the wheel is shredded. Masts are being held up only by three wooden planks, simply nailed into it. The capstan has been demolished, and the deck has been blackened by fire. In summary, the ship is RUINED.

Flameheart mentions this in his rantings: "I need no shipwright to replenish my vessels!" This is to demonstrate his power over the Sea of the Damned. But that phrase implies that the job of shipwrights in the Sea of Thieves are similar, if not exactly the same as they are in real life. Meaning, their entire job is to make or repair a ship.

Sandra the shipwright repeatedly mentions that she's building a ship to take out a kraken. That further implies that it's their job and duty to make and repair ships.

So, obviously, they can repair ships! Wait, what? They can't? Years of academy training, wasted?! Well, let's change that.

I propose that the developers add a feature where one of the options when talking to a shipwright is "Repair Ship". It can only be used if the ship is completely repaired. Similarly how when talking to a trading company representative, one option is "Browse Stock", then some other options and at the bottom, "What is an Emissary?", the shipwright will have this feature at the bottom of the lists of voice lines.

Now, I understand that some people strangely enjoy the visuals of the damage on their ship. So, when talking to the shipwright, if you choose "Repair Ship", the shipwright will give some dialogue explaining what it does. If your ship is not fully repaired already, she will say "Repair your ship. Then we'll talk." If it is fully repaired, she will say, "Do you want me to repair your ship? (0/4)" And your options will be "Yes" and "No". The number in the parenthesis will change depending on how many other people in the crew voted to repair the ship completely and on how many people are in the crew.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

The way I see it, this really should be in the game, as it only makes sense. Upvote if you agree.

Who knows? Maybe this post will convince the developers to add it into the game!

    Happy sailing!

There is a reason why this hasn't been implemented and its only because of Rare. I haven't noticed anyone in the community disagree with an option like this.

I asked Joe Neate this question a long time ago (can't remember exact words) "Hey you guys ever think about adding a purely cosmetics repair system, so that we can enjoy our ship skins without all that damage on it??"

There response was that they were against it because the damage to the ship told a player's story. Something along those lines.

Playerbase isn't against this idea, Rare is. I've asked this and others have too, no one disagrees with it. It would be a good gold sink as well. So good luck if you can pull it off.

  • I havnt seen much anyone wanting this idea.

As said before, damage to your ship shows your worth.
Wounds and battle scars from battle, any other ship that sees it might think twice or go for the neck thinking your wounded.
If you want a fixed ship....Scuttle.

  • I’ve seen this suggestion come up a few times over the years. Sure damage is part of the story, but so are repairs. If I break my arm then I don’t keep it in an improvised splint for sake of my story. I go to a doctor and get it fixed properly. Heck, when we break our ankles in game after a fall, they magically heal after a few seconds. They don't stay busted for the sake of a story. We even have the ability to switch back and forth from peg legs and feet with the click of a button. I have no issues with someone willing to pay some gold to get their ship back in order. It is a cosmetic choice.

I know that it's an important part to the story, but that's why there's the option to vote. If somebody doesn't want to repair it, they won't. I also believe a story would be more believable if they paid a shipwright to do their job and fully repair the ship. It's not like pirates in the 1700's wouldn't repaint their hull and replace their masts and wheels when they got damaged. After all, that would show a sign of poverty, because it implicates that they're too poor to repair the ship.

Scuttling a ship would just be counterproductive at times. You would loose all of your supplies unless you have enough storage crates and rowboats.

As I said, Flameheart "need(s) no shipwright to replenish (his) vessels!", and this indicates that repairing ships is a shipwright's job in the lore, so I doubt it would impede the adventure very much, if at all.
