Under developed economy system

  • I've been playing this game for the past two weeks or so after a very long hiatus from this game. There are a few more things to do compared to a few years ago, but it's sad to see that there still isn't much to do other than faction quests or PvP. I think the biggest problem in this game is not having anything to really spend your money on. Don't get me wrong, I like making my pirate look cool and all, but there needs to be a money sink. You could go through the whole game without spending any money at all and having pretty much the same experience that you'd have without spending it. All you can really do with the gold you earn is buy cosmetics. Other than that, there is really no incentive to do quests. Once you make your pirate look nice, the game is pretty much all about PvP, which is cool, but I wish there were more things you could use your gold for. Maybe you could have your own personal island that costs huge amounts of gold to upgrade. There could be an event where a random player island is marked and you can go raid it for treasure to upgrade your own island. I don't know, having gold seems pointless if all you can spend it on is cosmetics.

  • I completely agree, but having personal islands isn't that creative. If they added personal islands, people would probably be pretty upset. I think Sea of Thieves is more about the experiences, the friends, and the exploration than it is about spending gold.
    Just my opinion!

  • New commendations/tasks monthly make the everlasting gobstopper of grinding. So there is pretty much always something to do

There is more than pvp there is helping randoms/friends grind/achieve things
Ancient skelly and shrouded ghost hunting by staying active
    Fish commendations

There is a lot of content in this game many of the people that say they are bored and/or have nothing to do have barely scratched the surface of commendations.

There is a steady flow now of events like the summer event and the event going on now.

Outside of fun and thrill the game is mostly commendation based not gold based. This game is grind heavy where many of us spend hours a day at sea. We make too much gold to ever spend the gold system is more for casual play and the commendation system is more for us that play a lot.

Enjoy the gold pile and complete those commendations

  • @krivimara No thank you. One of the best aspects of this game is that someone can purchase the game today and they will have access to the same tools as some who has played since release day. I got so tired of games where my friends and I were at different levels. I either needed to make a new character to play with them through content I had already completed (usually many times). Or I would have to boost them to my level, racing through a lot of great content just so they could join me on higher level things. In SoT, someone can pick up the game and there is nothing they cannot enjoy, and fully contribute to with their friends. Plenty of other games do just fine without vertical progression. I really hate the idea of islands and bases that you have to build up so that you can protect your stuff from raiders while you are offline. Your idea sounds very familiar to a few other games. I want a game, not another obligation to maintain.

If the gold means nothing to you then quit amassing it. Gather loot and try to give it away. Place some cool items at the beacon at Crooked Masts and then tell a new player about a stash you spotted over there. Or imagine the look on some solo player’s face when they get back to their ship and find it stacked with loot.

100% a massive problem. They gotta make the gold in game worth using, somehow.

Some solutions to MAYBE fix a few things.

    1. Reduce the amount of gold players have presently by 90%
    2. Revalue the amount of gold gained by treasure turn ins based on the difficulty level of the task so that solo questing is fun, and as usual very easy but not as profitable as say for example a ship event or a skull fort.
    3. Put into the game some kind of in game economy that's LOCAL to the server while you are on, this way while you are on that server you could put certain items up for sale (cosmetics mabe?) with a shop keeper or something.
    4. Put in some kind of shipyard to repair your ship from battle damage that costs money and brings the function of the ship back up to "New" status, this would require ships that are "repaired" be less effective, maybe 90% of their effectiveness remains, but you can only ever get back to 90% by repairs when underway and that requires the shipwright to do the work that costs your crew gold.

These are only just ideas, and would need real design modification and tuning.
