The Reaper faction annoys me

  • Not because they're hunting me, but because they run!

I'm not a PvP focused player. I've been playing a year, recently hit PL, and that was both exclusively as a solo, and just with PvE content. Never really had a taste for PvP.

That's changed, recently. Within the last few weeks, since the Steam announcement. I've got a buddy that is interested in the game, but will only get into it when it hits Steam. Might as well learn PvP, to teach him.

So, with the introduction of the new faction, I figured it would be a great time to do so. I've done a few Arena fights, but they were pretty bland. The last few days, I've entered sessions just to hunt down Reapers. Win or lose, I'd learn something. I shy away from galleons, at least for now, but gun for other sloops and brigs.

Except, as stated, they run! Twice last night, I found a Reaper, and the first scuttled, the second just felt the need to circle around an island a few times before heading with the wind and outrunning me.

This morning, again, twice. The brig heads into the red sea from Sanctuary. I then head for the T5 Reaper on the map, which happens to be another sloop. And yet again, they run when I get close. They drop off a boarder, who misses my ladder, and that was the only offensive action they took. Chased for ten minutes, but that didn't go anywhere, so I just quit.

Reapers are based around PvP, right? My experience so far says otherwise.

You probably had the bad luck of running into people who were just farming loot to raise their rep with the company. With it being a new feature, a lot of people are going to be grinding it, including those not actually interested in PvP.

Just a question, did you have an emissary flag of your own raised? That would be some incentive for them to try and take you down.

  • Last night, no. Same with this morning, except after the brig. Went back to Sanctuary, slapped it on, went for that T5 sloop. Who ran. Wasn't a total waste, spotted a Gold Hoarder emissary nearby, so went for them. Wasn't very thrilling, nobody was onboard, so an easy sink. I figure I may have jinxed myself with this post, and the next three weeks will be nothing but PvP focused Reapers.

Also, I can't directly reply to you, because the forum says the first part of your name is 'illegal.'

Yes, that's cause I'm the bad boy of the SoT forums.

    Too hot to handle!

  • @ghost-of-rhyza regrettably there are many False Reapers on the seas atm but I have made it my personal mission to hunt them all down.

I could just brag about all the stuff I stole but I know no-one cares so just rest assured there are true reapers representing the faction well.

  • It is a little funny seeing people fly the flag and run..

I joined a group the other day that specified they were doing reapers. There were 2 docked high emissary ships an island over from where our crew was just digging up chests.. I suggested going to sink them and they said no. Fine.

Shortly after those two ships come straight as us, one of them manages to be climbing our crows nest so I kill them, and immediately start firing at the ship that's getting way to close, only to be yelled at by my crew because "these guys were obviously coming in to alliance with us" Yes. They were blatantly rolling in on US the marked reapers who are supposed to be the threat to their emissary bonus and had a guy climbing our crows nest so that they could alliance. They definitely weren't looking for kegs or anything... right guys..

Dude.. I want their flags, if you started a reaper group to play gold hoarder all day why post reaper up in the first place? I left after that.

    The lesson...?

Plenty of people want to do reapers, but get legitimate mad when PvP actually comes their way, and for some reason they want to fly the flag and think they'll be able to just dig chests all day. Too scared to PvP while flying the PvP-centric flag.

You can still earn reaper rep without the emissary. If you're going to fly it and level it up, be ready to defend it. You're marking yourself. You can run or whatever.. just don't be mad about being chased or shot at

  • There is no guide to playing a faction. You choose how you want to play. And as someone pointed, some are just grinding the faction for the rep and loot bonus.

Also, you shy away from galleons but chase sloops? Picky, I go for the galleon they give you a fight if you are so entitled for one. :)

  • You get people doing skull forts for reapers rep. That in my opinion should not be allowed and they should be forced to pvp.

  • @burnbacon As I said, I'm pretty new to PvP in general. Since I solo sloop, I'm trying to gauge what I can and can't do atm. I figure galleons are out of my league for now, at least with my skill, or lack thereof. I usually see two man brigs, which, being two people, seems to be my comfort zone.

  • @ghost-of-rhyza had that happen to us. We just hunted them down until we got them and man was it worth it. Ship FULL of loot.

    Tools not rules, my friend.

I'll do that to get to level 5 then i start hunting ships :P

Sink a ship after a fort. Insta grade V and the loot haha

I've had a few of those glorious moments immediately after getting into a game.

Had a real nasty FotD steal after loading in and seeing another Reaper there on the map collecting loot. Had to chase, but eventually caught them. Sent a cannonball into their crows nest while running and of course they had a mega keg and then some up there. Best Reaper steal I've had so far

  • @Ghost-of-Rhyza - I've noticed this as well, I wanted to up my PVP skill a little so thought why not have some fun and hunt the Reapers on the map, however I'd say close to 70% of the Reapers I have approached have attempted to avoid battle.

As Hombre said (unable to post his name) Is probably right when he says most are probably just farming loot rather then wanting to PVP.

In any case it's made me far less cautious when seeing Reapers. (Which will probably backfire on me one day lol)

  • If you aren't running an emissary flag, they should avoid you. There is no incentive to fight flagless ships.

That being said, everyone is different. I try to make a point if not hunting flagless ships and even defending them from other reapers. This of course is thrown out the window if they attack first

    Say what?

Stolen loot is literally the fastest way to hit grade 5. Flag or not.

You also get rank on emissary for killing players, and I'm pretty sure for when the ship goes down.

Reaper emissary encourages sinking regardless of what someone else is doing.

Thinking like that probably explains why more often than not I see so many reapers still only at grade 2 after an hour of play..

  • @tre-oni you dont get rank for killing or sinking non emissaries. You do get rank for their loot but its easier to guarantee loot on a grade 2+ ship.

Notice my choice of the word hunt. I dont hunt other ships if they dont have a flag, as in im not wasting my time chasing them.

If you focus your efforts you can hit grade 5 twice in an hour. Once in 30-45 off of random loot and unlucky ships and the second time by marking all emissaries and then selling your flag and raising a new one so you can more discreetly hunt the marked ships.)

  • @rattlyfob said in The Reaper faction annoys me:

More than positive I've seen my emissary bar fill from killing crews regardless of emissary.

  • Not all boats with flags on the back are reaper factions. And their job is not to be sunk.

  • All I play is reaper now, pvp all day.

  • Don't worry matie you run into me I won't run away lol.. surely most would fight that are flying the reapers bones or maybe it s like the old days people getting around with the reapers up and running 🤣

  • @dzivi said in The Reaper faction annoys me:

You get people doing skull forts for reapers rep. That in my opinion should not be allowed and they should be forced to pvp.

The problem with that is that a lot of the time the servers are very quiet so Reapers might not be able to find other ships to sink and they need to be level 5 to be able to see other ships on the map.

Potentially a Reaper could be sailing around the map for over an hour just trying to find a ship to sink and even if they do there is no guarantee that they can catch and sink them.

There really does need to be some PvE way of getting Reaper rep otherwise the faction becomes a terrible and in some cases literally impossible grind when the servers are quiet, which is not an infrequent occurrence for a lot of players.

  • @tre-oni I can assure you this does not work. You don't get grade for killing or sinking non-emissaries.

As for why people who are reapers run? The whole emissary system encourages loot stacking until you hit grade 5 to cash in. And reapers tend to get chased or pushed into conflicts that they can't win at times. For instance, a grade 5 reaper might have to defeat 2-3 ships in a row throwing themselves at them since they all know where they are. Reaper ships tend to get strung along from one encounter to the next, and they might need time to cool down. I sunk a brig a couple days ago that had over 100 pieces of loot, seemingly inadvertently. They simply never had a second to breathe and cash in. I'm a huge advocate of picking up the shroud breaker as a reaper to cool down outside the map and lose other ships.

  • @chris5626 so in this case make it where loot gives credit toward upgrading flag rank BUT NOT rep for the faction this way stolen loot gives rep kills gives rep pvp gives rep but not pve and u can pve to increase to lvl 5 for the bonus as u said
id also say if u run from a boat u should slow lose rep.. like a bleedout timer rep slowly drains after X amount of time running with a boat chasing u and one the rep starts to drain have it drain slowly then get more and more lost... its a pvp faction not a run away faction
but yes i agree pve for lvl 5 but not for rep stolen goods only for rep and kills and sinks of course

Well that would help ensure Reapers could get to emissary level 5 however it does nothing to change the fact that there might not be enough human targets available.

As it is at the moment you simply can't guarantee there will be sufficient numbers of other players on at all times to ensure there will be enough targets for players to gain 75 levels entirely through PvP.

What I would suggest in order to address the originally raised issue would be to re-balance how the Reaper faction xp is earned to better promote the attacking of other players but not relying solely on it, if done right that would incentivise more aggression from Reapers but wouldn't unfairly penalise those that play in regions or at times when the servers are quiet.
