  • No. It doesn't make sense to buy something you can then sell right back. Besides, finding these things while exploring becomes its own reward, and forces you to slow things down a bit more until you find them giving others more of a chance to take what you already have. Always having these things means that you'll never have to slow down, and that's bad for the social aspects of the gameplay in SoT.

Although I agree with you, I must emphasize that it is possible to "buy" ashen key and chest... And this does not make any sense.

True enough, but in those cases, you're either spending gold to get dubloons, or you're spending dubloons for fewer dubloons - so it's either a trade-off or a net loss. I myself have lost dubloons just trying to get specific tomes. So, while I didn't have to put in as much work, I had to pay up the whazzoo for a mere chance of getting what I actually wanted.

Obviously, you wouldn't buy a crate of cannons to sell it right back... you'd buy a crate of cannons so that you had more cannons.... and, whilst having them; would be giving others the 'chance' to take them... furthermore, if you could buy them, then you wouldn't have to 'slow down' for the sake of 'balance'.. and if the new spawn can buy them, they wouldn't have to 'catch up' ... in fact, this could be a means of Balancing servers, by enabling you to buy a certain quantity based on the current stock/progress of the other crews on the server you're joining, thereby spending less "slow down" time....

All flawed rhetoric, really.. the defense usually boils down to: 1) balance issues, and 2) Git guuder.

For 1, I reluctantly agree, although this point could easily be rendered moot when you consider that you can fresh spawn into a server that another crew has already spent hours stocking up... this kinda debunks crying foul that it's unfair to be able to buy resources... one could argue that for the sake of "balance", this shouldn't be possible.... but would result in long waits for a server to start with all fresh spawns... which would suck...

and, for 2: the "git gud" rebuttal is extremely contradictory... why be so worried about someone else having more stuffs if you're so confident you can outplay them already? Shouldn't it not matter, if thou art so Guud?

I digress; for like the fourth time in a week across similar threads; I concur that cannons/planks/fruit would/could be abused given they are core resources for turtling... some careful thought would need to go into the who / how / when / where; which could snowball into a greater headache than before....

But I've yet to see a cohesive argument against empty storage crates, and ammo boxes.... they simply wouldn't amount to some crazy unfair advantage, especially if you could buy them, too....

  • @jeff-jragon The "slow down" is actually a good thing. It helps set the pace by keeping tensions high. Should I do this rewarding thing that takes a while but might leave me open to attack? Or forego it and stay on the move with fewer resources or loot?

I respectfully disagree, that the slower pace is a good thing... I believe the majority, prefers a higher pace, with less downtime; and Arena was slapped together because of this. Don't get me wrong, I prefer Adventure over Arena because you can set your own pace; where the tension is caused merely by the presence(threat?) of others, with varying agendas... that's actually what I love about SoT..

I'm getting old though, and don't have the time to commit to my sessions like i u used too... so I would support a 'catch up' mechanic, like buying resources/crates; given the fact that we have to anonymously drop into a server where a crew has spent 4+ hours plundering. By no means do I hold Rare liable to remedy this, because I love the format, the tension, that SoT has... and will play it regardless...

But my feedback, is supporting of spending my pixel-gold on resources/crates. Maybe with consideration on limits based on the current servers active crews. For example, a new player spawning into a server with several long active PL crews, could be offered discounted goods for a healthy start of a session against questionable odds. And vice versa; supplies could be scarcely offered to PL crews, and be extremely expensive, as a new means of sinking the millions of pixels with nothing to do out on the seas.

Like I said, regardless, I love SoT. And, I support this suggestion.

Good for everyone? My crew and I have MILLIONS and MILLIONS and MILLIONS in gold. How would that be good for newer crews who wouldn't be able to buy all the supplies we could buy?
