Sudden ping increase after an hour

  • Hi all,

I play on Win 10 with WiFi.

I'm having troubles with a strange problem: after an hour or so playing with ping values around 30-50, it suddenly goes to constant values between 300-500 and the game becomes unplayable due to lag and extreme rubberbanding.

Closing the game OR reconnetting WiFi (one OR the other) solves the problem for about another hour, then it appears again.

I've tried everything from resetting my router to reinstalling WiFi drivers, changing place around the house, reinstalling the game...

The strange thing is that I see the same increased ping in the Xbox Companion App, and closing the game brings the ping back to normal, so I wouldn't consider it a network problem.

My connection is an FTTH, and my speed tests are always excellent. Please avoid telling me to play with Ethernet.

Any help or suggestion would be appreciated!

  • i'd check your router it definently sounds like your router might be spiking search on google how to ping my ip adress see if your getting ping spikes

  • @jollyolsteamed the problem is, I'm not having spikes. I play perfectly fine for an hour (sometimes a bit more or less) and then BAM! Ping goes steady on 350-500 until I restart the game.

  • @cabrebthefirst what kind of wifi adapter you using?

  • Perhaps you're experiencing server merges? I know my ping is ~300 when I end up on an aussie server after a merge

  • @jollyolsteamed I have an integrated Realtek WiFi adapter. I play on an HP pavillion gaming laptop.

I was thinking about buying an external WiFi adapter to check if the problem is linked to the integrated one, but I'd prefer to save those money.

  • @bactatankbill nope, never had problems with server merge. My friends do not experience the problem, and rejoining the session solves it for another hour or so.

  • @cabrebthefirst i used to have an adapter aswell i mixed with the output of those in the internet settings (which is not recommended) but essentially what this did the internet was faster ingame but slow as heck on browsers etc dont exactly remember how i did it but i could have a look at it

  • @jollyolsteamed Well if you remember what you did, let me know!

  • Update

The problem depends on my computer, because it happened even with another router.

It seems to happen only on 2.4 GHz. If I play on a 5 GHz WiFi network everything is smooth.

I'm thinking about formatting my PC, because it seems very strange to me that I can play smoothly for an hour and then it suddenly starts to lag. I don't think it's an hardware issue.

  • @cabrebthefirst you managed to find a fix for the high ping mixing with the GHz? this was what i did
