Actual, Handheld Torches

  • With so many torches scattered across the many islands of the Sea of Thieves, why is it that we cannot physically carry one as a pirate?

My ideas for a Torch item are as follows:

It can either be a reskin for the lantern, so that pirates can carry a Torch with different colored flames emitting from the top, and can be turned on or off at any time...

    OR...

The torch could be introduced as a new weapon type! Here is how it could possibly work:

You have to physically light it yourself using either stray firepits and torches found around the various islands, or you could light it on your ship using a candle found on the voting table, or there could be a "Fire Starter Station" found on the actual ship, similar to the water bucket! In it, you can turn wooden planks into kindling to start fires and light your torch on the ship.

Now, what can you do with Torches as a utility-weapon? Well, for starters, it would have a limited-time fuse on it, so you would have to relight it after a certain number of seconds after use. Torches can be used to incinerate enemy ships, players, or could possibly be used to clear out environmental hazards to find hidden passageways, scare off snakes, solve riddles, and more! You can use the Torch to light the environment around you on fire, great for clearing out hoardes of Skeletons, or for setting up chokepoints, flank routes, and traps.

I think having a Torch either as an item or as a new weapon would be a great addition to the Sea of Thieves! If it's for a cosmetic, it adds a whole new layer of depth to customization, so as pirates can dress up as one of the Ancients. If used as a weapon, it is yet another opportunity to expand the strategies of fighting and violence across the waves and on the shores!

    I like the idea,
I had a similar one myself a while back but never expanded on it. I think as a weapon or lantern it might have a few mechanics problems. In my opinion a 'Torch' item should act as a physical item in game like loot does.

-Take a torch you find on an island, pick it up as if it was a sellable skull, gem, trinket

-If its not lit find a campfire, lantern or Beacon to ignite from

-'Left Trigger' would raise the torch but players could steal it

-'Right Trigger' would start a swinging emote that acts as an 'Area of Effect' Attack

-Can place torch in a brazier on the ship

-If dropped on the deck, the ship will slowly catch fire

-Snakes and grass skeletons could act afraid

I think this way might be less conflicting with the current mechanics of the game. If you ask me the items wheel should be customisable so we can put what we want where much like the emote wheel. If it was this way I could see a torch being added at another 'equipment item' but otherwise it would be like having a drum and a bongo with different mechanics.
