More video options for Xbox please

  • I guess this is a simple post, and maybe it has been talked about before. I know it has been talked about as part of general discussions revolving the whole PC vs Console discussions and Opt-Out. To be clear, this is not the place for that discussion.

Simply put, I would like to hear from Rare or the Dev Team as to why we can't have more options allowing us to adjust video. I have an Xbox One X. My max frames are locked to 30 fps by SoT. Is there a way to allow us to adjust our settings. Maybe give up on some of the high definition video so that we can gain some fps? I am told this is easy to do in PC. But, other than changing the hard settings in xbox settings, there is no way to do this in game. And I am not convinced that by changing my settings in xbox that SoT allows anything more than 30fps.

So, I would like to hear form everyone on this, if they would be in favor of having choices to give up some of the high def imagery for more fps? I would also love to hear from a Rare Dev Team person to see if this is even possible. Or are there complications preventing it?

  • Give up , this Marvellous looking world in 4k for more than 30 frames per second? If i'm not wrong then eyes can't register the switching from on and off by some 18 to 19 times per second...I don't care if i run around in 30 or 60 Frames per second , i certainly won't play better by it...But don't give up hope Mr No Fears Fun...Maybe there will be 60 frames on the new Xbox One X Series Console...Who knows...?

  • @clumsy-george There is a semi-noticeable difference between 30 and 60 fps tbf. 30 is easily playable and doesn't actually harm your skill etc but 45-60 looks smoother and better. I personally don't notice a difference in 50+. So you are semi-right but if they are able to increase fps in exchange for worse graphics they may as well do it.

  • @clumsy-george Good to see you here matey. Don't get me wrong, I love the visuals that I do get with the 4K. I have some truly amazing screen shots, especially sunsets from various places. The games graphics are truly awesome, even after all this time. But truth is, while playing, running around and such, I don't notice those high end graphics quite so much.

Especially with all the rubber banding, glitching and rendering issues caused by fast movements. That and I still have far too many occasions in PvP when I am facing off with someone and they can run around me, without me being able to see them or spin around fast enough to see them and counter whatever they are doing. I believe that the fps is the final piece of the puzzle for me, with my set up, to be on a closer playing field to PC players.

That and I am a big fan of options. Let each of us decide what is most important to us. What matters most to us. Do we want a higher rate of FPS, even if we have to give up on the 4K? Or do we want the 4K more than the FPS. Let each of us make that choice.

  • @nofears-fun I would also like a slider or a pair of options. Bit this raises another question, what about when the series x launches in ~10 months.

  • I think if you could downgrade the resolution to 1080p there is a good possibility that you could exceed 30fps which would also mean that in some areas of the game when the framerate dips, you have a better chance of staying above 30.

  • @captain-coel The issue currently is that the limitations are set by Rare. The xbox one x is capable of 60 fps currently, but is limited in some games, including SoT. And while I will most likely be one of the first to get the higher end series x when it comes out, I don't believe I should have to wait for it, since the hardware I currently have is capable of more. If the problem is SoT's high end graphics at 4K are simply too much to attain 60 fps, then why can't we have options to adjust that, in game settings? I like options. And I like the idea of making the game a bit smoother, and give me more of a chance for higher responsiveness.

Now, if Rare's decision to limit the fps on console was because the graphics are simply too much for the consoles processor, then they should say that. If not, then release it to its full potential, or give me more options.

  • @d3adst1ck I have tried playing with the settings through xbox settings, downgrading it to 1080P and the imagery was terrible. To the point I could not see birds for ship wrecks unless I was nearly under them. And I did not feel I gained anything for responsiveness, or any fps gain. I think the game itself needs to have the options for video complexity built into its own settings. I also think Rare can give us more than they currently are, if not, then I wish they would explain why they can't.

  • Don't see the point in this it works fine on an X.

  • @nofears-fun
This is very technical stuff and normally i stay out of these things but....Maybe Rare is aware that their game is run on servers who may rubberband , glitch or lag and maybe they have decided to stay at 30 FPS in the hope to not advantage the ones with internet that has killerspeeds....

Once again, Mr No Fears Fun, i don't write this to offend you nor any other FPS fan, but Rare had always the vision to gather as much Pirates as possible...This also includes Pirates who live in lowly densed places on this Earth , or Pirates , young or old , doesn't really matter ,who don't have access to killerinternet , by financial or just technical reasons...

These are all questions as i'm technically still in the Stone Age with my knowledge of Internet, PC's or Xboxes...But is it possible that Rare has tried to create an enviroment that is sooo beautiful that you forgive them for not adding hardcore technical things that aren't available for each and every Pirate...

  • @clumsy-george Matey, I never feel offensed by you sir! I only ask it because the PC community does in fact have higher fps. Which means that Rare's servers should be capable of supporting it, as they already do it now. Just my thoughts on it though.

  • @nofears-fun
Ah, okay ...i understand it better now...So , in other words , now that Opt Out is available and if there is no Xbox player in the server , the server could allow better performance for the PC players on that server... Is that right or did i missunderstand again, Mr No Fears Fun?

  • @clumsy-george Not exactly. What I am saying is, on my xbox one x, the download size for the game is generally the same as for PC players. While the xbox one and xbox one s are smaller sizes. The explanation that I always got back in the day was the reason for the added download size was because we were capable of better graphics.

That is great, but, they (Rare) allow PC players fps to be based on what their system is capable of. In other words, they have no cap. But for us xbox users, we are all capped at a max fps. Why is that if different systems can do different things? I am also worried that when series x comes out, that Rare will not free up this cap, so I will be buying a system that early reports say the new system could be capable of upto 120 fps. So, if rare does not free up this cap, then I will have a system capable of 120 fps, locked to 30 fps.

So my point is, if my system can handle more fps based on not only the systems specs, but what other games are doing, why do we have a cap?

  • @nofears-fun
Thanks for the explenation, now i even better understand it...But what you say could perfectly work if....Xbox One and Xbox One S players would always choose Opt Out...Yes?...

But what with those Pirates who don't mind the fact that PC players may be a bit faster than them and still use Crossplay? Could it not be that a few Die Hard , or Hardcore PC players who would love to keep their 60 or 120 fps become angry as they see their fps sink to thirthy and give that sole or few Xbox One / Xbox One S a hard time just to get rid of them to make it a PC or Xbox One X or Xbox One Series X only server?

i do understand that you want to use yer PC at full power , but would that also exclude slower PC machines? ...

Again , these questions aren't to annoy you , it's more that i'm learning from these explenations.

  • @clumsy-george Currently, even within the xbox's three different systems, each has different specs and each can have external upgrades to make them better. For example, I have an external SSD. My reload/respawn times are nearly as fast as a PC player.

Now to be clear, I don't like opt out, but I understand it. I would rather see cross play be successful. But the disparages between the various systems and how each is potentially upgraded can be huge. For that reason, if this discussion were about cross play, I would say that Rare does in fact need to set limits across the board for all platforms and all systems. But as you said, that would create a lot of blow back from many people that have upgraded their systems, including me.

While fps can have an effect on PvP, I personally want the higher fps because it does make for a smoother ride if you will. I play on both PC and Xbox. Even on my older, much slower PC (Before I upgraded/replaced it recently) I found that playing on PC the graphics were much smoother. I can't honestly say what my fps were, but I could tell they were higher than what I get on xbox. But I still prefer playing on xbox, with my much larger TV, lounging in my lazyboy.

As for the limitation on fps that Rare has for xbox, I don't believe that has anything to do with fairness between systems. If it were, then they would have had those same limits on PC from day one.

Now having said that, if Rare's reasoning was because of fairness, then fine, give me higher fps choice, and if I make that choice, I lose my ability to opt out. Put me in the PC pool, I already swim there anyways as I have yet to use opt out. But I don't see fairness as a valid argument for the limitation. It is either a technical thing, or simply something Rare does not know, or spent any time addressing.

Again, the reason I started this post had nothing to do with PvP, and more to do with the fact that I know that I will be getting the new series x when it becomes available. I know that it will be, at minimum, capable of doing double what the one x does today (which is 60fps). I know that Rare has for some reason locked the fps to 30 for xbox. If my system can handle more, than why is it limited now. If they limit it now, it only stands to reason it will be limited on the series x when it comes out. Which seems like a waste and would surely affect new people from joining the game, as, with lower fps than other newer games, even the great graphics SoT has now will not be enough, since other games will present much smoother graphics while also striving for higher end graphics.
