I have some words to say about Skeleton Lords. And with your help, I want to make a movement.

  • Please dont shrug off this post, its kinda a big deal!

    We have 7 Skeleton Lords. And we have 3 Skeleton Lord Abilities. Does that seem right? I have a list of moves, and I want you guys to build on it with me. There's just too many possibilities. We need to speak up if we want something to get done. Feel free to leave suggestions for Skeleton Lords and their abilities! I created a similar post in the Discussions category to raise awareness and get some people's opinions. Build on the idea with me and help get Rare's attention on this! Skeleton Lords are supposed to be unique in their own ways, driven by their own anger and desires. But with 7 lords but all have the same 3 abilities, they feel really bland and predictable. Change this!

    Some move ideas:

    Have some kind of earthy-crystally Skeleton Lord (similar to the way Captain Douglas' Skull looks) Slam the ground and make cracks on the ground in different formations. after 3 seconds, rock or crystal spikes shoot out of the cracks, damaging you if you stand on the cracks.

    Graymarrow deals in curses, why not make him use curses on you? Make him temporarily banish players, turning their screen foggy, preventing them from interacting with anything, and making them look ghostly to other players!

    A Skeleton Lord that chucks firebombs, breathes fire, and has fire-bullets in his gun! You can only damage him if you splash water on him, otherwise he's got a heart full of fire! (I have a certain Skeleton Lord in mind for this one)

    Helmsman has a freakin' harpoon hand! LET HIM USE IT!!!!!! Give him voice lines so he can say "Get over here!"

    The Ghost of Graymarrow should be the only one who can Teleport.

    Two Faced Scoundrel has two faces... make him take his heads off and throw them on the ground, and have his body fall on its knees, vulnerable, while his heads jump around you and bite you!

    Make a Skeleton Lord with a cannon stuck in her chest, that she will light the fuse and fire at you, instantly killing you if it hits. The way you counter this is by making us fight her in an arena with things to hide behind!

    Give us Traps on the Forts similar to the Art of the Trickster, and let the Skeleton Lords run around and use them, or add a new type of Skelly, the Trapmaster Skeleton. Only spawning on forts, it's a very organized skeleton, with their toolbelt, they run around activating any Traps that they can get their hands on! Even the ones that kill them too!

    The Duchess should be able to back off and disappear until you kill all her minions, she's too high society to be fighting dirty pirates like you!

    The Gold Hoarder should be able to pour liquid gold on himself and when it hardens, you have to shoot through his solid armor. While his armor is on, he is slower.

    Briggsy should be able to summon ghostly cages in the air that she could try and drop on top of you, if you get caught, you'll be stuck there for a few seconds!

    A Skeleton Lord that I've dubbed "The Ringmaster", who is dressed like a Jester. You fight him in a circular arena, where he stands on an elevated pedestal in the center. He fires at you from up there, while he controls what activity is in the ring. He could drop in skeletons for you to fight, he could drop the floor out and make you swim away from skeletal sharks while you try to drain the water, He could make certain parts of the arena burn, limiting where you could stand.

    A Skeleton Lord that I've dubbed "The Lightning Rod", him and his minions are silvery-metal skeletons, dressed in tribal rags and feathers, with tribal paint all over them. He has two skeletons behind him which have instruments, and when they play their instruments, he starts doing a rain dance to make lightning strike him, and the electrical current jumps between his minions, sometimes staying there, making walls of electricity between two skeletons wherever they move. You can prevent him from doing his dance by beating up the two skeletons who play the music for his dance!

    The Warsmith was way back in the Cursed Sails, bringing the Cursed Cannonballs and Skeleton Ships into the fray. We sent her and her Sandman's Revenge to the bottom of the sea, but her sister says she was still kicking. Back then, Skeleton Lords didn't have abilities, but if the Sandman's Revenge comes back for revenge, maybe let her use her Cursed Cannonballs on you a bit more personally? Let her smash them on the ground and apply the effects to players and skeletons nearby her!

    It's terrible that with our current 7 Skeleton Lords, they ALL have the same abilities. I want to change that. People who see this as an issue need to speak up. I don't think Rare realizes that we're disappointed.

  • I applaud the sentiment here. Variety is the spice of life. Some of your suggestions may be a bit over-powered. But it is matter of how they are implemented.

    However, I would add... The Duchess (or any Skeleton Lord) should be immune to geysers.

    1: They're SKELETON LORDS, they should be pretty strong.

    2: There's always room to adjust, like the incapacitating ones would have short durations.

  • This is what I like to see OP! I'd love it if all the skelly lords had their own move sets! You put some good thought into this, and I think every suggestion you've made could potentially make it into the game, or inspire a move that ends up in the game, for sure. I just wanted to add one lord:

    Plant Skeleton Lord!
    moves include
    Short distance 'teleport': it can move from one grassy area to another nearby grassy area, animation would be a giant venus fly-trap swallowing the lord, and a second fly-trap appears a short distance away, allowing the lord to climb out.

    Root: a vine appears under a nearby pirate and constricts them, preventing movement for a time (but not attacking or using items).

    Pollen Cloud: AoE 'poison' effect radiating from the skeleton lord, blurring vision and causing damage over time (similar to snake venom)

    This is a much needed (and very basic) overhaul that we need. I'm kind of confused as to how Skeleton Lords have been in the game for like 8 months and have seen no improvements.

  • I concur. Skeleton Lords need an overhaul so each encounter is more unique. And honestly, in my opinion what's needed for some of the lords is just a basic adjustment to their move-set so they prefer some abilities over others.

    For instance, the Mutinous Helmsman might place a high priority on the "summon reinforcements" move, playing into potential lore behind his name. Alternatively, he could have a new move that makes your crew susceptible to friendly fire. I'll see if I can work on a decent list of possible moves later.

  • @chronodusk I'm happy to see that people agree with me. I hadn't even realized that we have no progress in 8 months. What's the point of making new Skeleton Lords with the same abilities? If its gonna be that way, just use the old ones!

  • They probably have the same moves because of Xbox memory limitations. Sonicbob said that the reason we couldn't have the Ashen Guardians and Ashen Key Masters use the Ashen Skeleton models was due to memory limitations. If models are taking up so much memory, imagine what new moves will do.

    "We also wanted to reuse these cool ashen models outside of the Tale, however have some pretty heavy memory restrictions currently that prevented this. It's not as easy as just having the models, if it was easy we'd have done it!"

  • @mferr11 I think that's kind of an issue on Rare's part. Other games do such things fine. If what you say is true, then I'd like them to stop updating their game and taking up memory, and skip one month of updates, and use that month to optimize and fix things.

    I dunno if anyone mentioned it but if there is memory restrictions give them cursed cannonball abilities lol

    The ability to poison you, set you on fire, make you drunk, dance, sleep etc lol

    I 100% agree with making them more unique so if they are limited then use what's already in game!

    Man I'd be worried for my safety if one of these guys hit me...made me dance..laughed at me and summoned the adds while I was still dancing lol

    Or I run up and try to hit it and it knocked me in the head with a beer or something and made me drunk and I'm tripping over myself trying to slash at them lol

  • An example of GOOD content recycling: Ritual Skulls. Originally used as an event loot item to sell, now used as a FoTD startup key.

    BAD content recycling: Reusing the same abilities for 7 bosses.

    I totally agree, we need more variation.
    As for Grey Marrows curses though, we already have curses in game they can use.
    Why not make you drunk, dance or fall asleep.

    I still think all the Lords should be able to summon skellies, they are lords after all and need minions to do their bidding. But they could even make the smaller skeletons match the Lords in a way. Give them a theme to make them seem more like a crew.
    We've seen loads of concept art for skeletons with wheels on their back or oars stuck in and about them.

    Greymarrow had a crew of unique skeletons in the trailer he was shown in, they were first walking around a stronghold and attacked the crew the Tall Tale trailer centered around later on.

  • @klutchxking518 Yeah, there are a lot of curses though, they could still keep 3 per lord but split them up between the 2 lords.
    Just an idea. It's a brilliant concept you've proposed.

  • @dreadpirate9200 I would love if they would just add roaming skeleton lords... as long as they don't drop villainous skulls... they should drop their own skull.

  • @dreadpirate9200 They should add skeleton lords onto special skeleton ships... They could make some skeleton ship that is invincible until you killed the lord that pilots it.
