PvP, PvE, Progression

  • Let me start off by saying: I'm new to Sea of Thieves.

However, I'm far from new to the aspects of online gaming; I started the very year Ultima Online came out and have been a daily gamer since, taking part in every major MMORPG (some more so than others).

That said, I'm enjoying Sea of Thieves thus far, despite having always been a solo player (except a couple years on Soldier of Fortune II when I was part of a Clan called The Scorpion Elite =TSE=). I don't take part in raids on WoW, trials on ESO or any form of groups on Fallout 76; though I do play League of Legends. All of that might end up changing with my desire to actually feel like a Pirate Captain in Sea of Thieves.

As things stand, I'm very happy going out collecting treasures, battling mobs and sailing away from other ships as quickly as possible for cosmetic upgrades. I'm quite happy in the knowledge that no other pirate on the seas is more powerful than I in a 1v1, simply more experienced.

However, I know myself well enough to say this will eventually become tiresome, with or without a crew; but this is a game I don't want to become tired of. I won't ask for a complete, free overhaul of the game itself as some of the PvE and PvP complaint posts do.

(I tried looking for this suggestion but couldn't find it, so my apologies if it's out there)

    • How about separate game modes?

Keep the game as is, but introduce a new game mode for those players who do wish for their own pirate and ship to become more powerful.

    A game mode where:

    • We start with a base ship and single cannon, with multiple upgrade routes; fast ships, durable ships, cargo ships, etc.
    • We start with base pistol and cutlass, with professional combat routes; melee, medium range, long range, etc.
    • We have gear that give defenses to different weapon types; reduced slash/stab damage, reduced bullet damage, etc.
    • We can choose to be a weaponsmith, armorsmith, alchemist, chef or even a shipwright; become known to craft the best weapons or armor, to always have a stock of healing potions or poisons, to sell the best food or build the best ships
    • There are new islands with crafting materials and combat gear
    • There are voyages to obtain crafting materials and combat gear
    • There are sanctuary outposts to stash your goods which are otherwise entirely lootable by players

I understand introducing such a huge game mode would be a lot of work, take a lot of time and space, and likely cost money as an expansion/DLC for those who wish to take part.

I also understand this isn't appealing to all players. I've already seen how many were complaining about the PvP aspect, and I'm certain that I'll feel similar after experiencing my first heavy loss but I'd still love to have a feeling of progression.

You can say that players who play a lot would have an extreme advantage in this game mode over those who are casual but want to take part, and you'd be correct.

    • Why wouldn't a dedicated pirate crew have advantages over newcomers?

You can say that players could park their advanced ships outside of sanctuary outposts to destroy those attempting to leave, and you'd be correct.

    • A greater incentive for players like me to form a crew to make it off the sanctuary outpost. Or, a grace period upon leaving sanctuaries where you're immune to attack for a set period of time (like when entering the Outlands or the surrounding Portal zone in Albion Online).

Introducing these changes as a new, purchasable game mode would mean only those interested in taking part will be involved. Those who want to play Sea of Thieves as it is now would still be able to do so. It may even help reduce how frequently players who dislike PvP are attacked in the base game, and increase the likelihood of ships/players you see in the base game being friendlies. I saw five other player ships in a two-hour period, during the AM hours (PST). At least one was a crew of three, and clearly watching me. That's obviously an average of one ship every 24 minutes, which I imagine is overwhelming to players who love Sea of Thieves but are limited on game time and uninterested in the possibility of being attacked by other players.

It's not entirely likely I read responses unless I get one from the staff. I'm quite used to the negativity from established gaming communities when you suggest changes to their games.

    Thanks for reading.

  • @tarellion - Unfortunately most of what you suggest goes against the ethos of the game, and is not playing it as intended.

It takes people a while to get used to the fact that there is only horizontal progression. I like the fact that the only difference between a new player and an established one is the knowledge they have gained.

Since you have said that you are unwilling to read or hear from the people that your suggestions will affect, @Deckhands please lock this non discussion thread.

  • @badassfro I didn't say I'm "unwilling"; I said it is "not entirely likely", which leaves a chance.

The TLDR of my suggestion is: introducing a different play style as a new game mode.

This means that the game - as it is now - would still be playable as a "Classic" mode for those who prefer it, such as yourself.

Absolutely no one who wishes to play the game as it is now would have to purchase or take any part in a different game mode.

  • Dude i would like your suggestion aswell but i just say that you’re not the first one suggesting a game mode and people here don’t want to see the game changed, they quote stuff from wikipedia treating an online service game as a lapidary stone that can’t be changed so my 2 cents is good luck. I would love a game mode aswell but they think that this change instead of making people play a game that they wouldn’t play otherwise it would hurt the server population even though they have no data to back it up at all and no idea that i am not firing up the game many times because of this reason. Once again good luck as in forums you’ll mainly find people that is really too much enthusiast

  • @tarellion

Your asking for a sort of single player campaign mode?
    No issues with that.
The Arena mode was never around several years ago, but now it is.
So it is possible. It would be great for players to play whilst waiting for friends to come online.

  • The new game mode should be a pirate card game where we can bet out ingame gold!

Letsss go pay me now Rare.

As much as you say "new game mode" what you mean is "new game" - all the progression stuff you have listed wouldn't even have a place in a new "Game mode" it's a fundamental change to the Game

What is you're issue with playing the game as intended? you have listed your suggestions to make it "better" but not what you think is the issue. The only thing you mention is that you fear it will grow tiresome, but is that not everything, ever?

If I only drank water I would say that would become tiresome.

The game is rated 12 in the UK.
I can't see gambling ever featuring.

Lighten up, it was a little joke.

  • @badassfro I'm getting the feeling you didn't even read my original post. I never said I have an issue with playing the game as it is; on the contrary, I stated that I'm enjoying it.

"New game mode" and "new game" are not synonymous, no matter their vast differences. Introducing a Survival mode and a Battle Royale mode to Fallout 76 did not change the base game. Bringing back Classic WoW did not change retail WoW. You can accurately consider Classic WoW and retail WoW to be different "game modes", and neither impacts the other in any way. They are not different games, as they are both World of Warcraft.

No, not everything grows tiresome, because online games change specifically to keep that from occurring or communities mod RPGs they love and enjoy to experience new content while doing so.

  • @tarellion

I believe he was specifically saying that is wasn't a new mode at all due to the sheer difference to the current game, but would end up as a new game altogether. Currently, I'd rather see further updates to the existing SoT than making a new game off of it (as much as I'd like an RTS of the skeleton forces), but perhaps after the planned 10 year lifetime is up another game can spring off of the existing world. This changes one of the main components of the game: everyone is together, and everyone is mechanically the same. As such, it would take a lot to change the game to such a state after it was built around that core component. I wouldn't mind a game like this eventually, particularly if you could design your own ships, weapons, etc, but it's not something that would be done quickly.

nope not going to happen sorry @Quartermasters

  • Though all awsome ideas and what you wrote is completely well thought out . However the devs didn't want progression systems so that myself who is played since alpha or people new to sot have access to the same very things and whether we win or lose on the seas it has nothing to do with what type of weapons or ships we have bit rather the crew we sail with. Skill is based on communication and learning the seas . Though a form of ranking, skill progression would be cool the devs designed the game to be purely cosmetic and wins or loses are determined by skill and how you have mastered ( though broken at times ) mechanics

  • @tarellion

Game development needs focus. What you are asking for is a very complex game that would need a bigger scale, different regions, different matchmaking, balancing... in essence you want them to make a different full fledged game... it just isn't realistic.

  • @tarellion The deves have been working pretty hard not to have this game be about that kind of progression. I doubt they're going to invest the time in doing something different. You're talking about a different game. If you tire of the game, take a break... a lot of people do that.
