I think there should be a way to save your treasure that hasn't been sold if you have to logout before making it to an outpost or if it needs a key. I suggest being able to bury it. Anywhere. Then maybe be able to curse it with skeleton/shark protectors if found by another pirate group by accident.

If you have to log out before making it to an outpost, you lose the treasure. It's session-based, no one gets to keep their things (especially resources) between sessions. And cursing it isn't likely if it does happen.
@seviin77 servers have a limited up-time, and those times are less then a day... after that time that particular server merges everyone out and shuts down and goes back into the waiting pool, waiting to spin up again when it is required
that is just one of the reasons this game is session based
