We just lost three tomes and wasted hours for nothing, we had three tomes in one ashen chest and when we got to Sticher Jim and sold the chest with the three tomes inside and it didnt counted them and only sold the chest.
Fix it now its horrible we lost all of this progress for nothing.
Rare fix the ashen chests!

@faceyourdemon how about...sell it seperatly??
Dude if i have opened it and sold the chest it would make sense that it would count them, now of course i know that it dosent work right but the logical thing when i approached sticher Jim and saw the message sell it would be make sense to count them all or not to be able because there are items inside.
Seperating them shouldnt be the answer many players will try to do that for the first time and its RARE's fault.
Edit: no one will be sure that now it was added to the game but when players will get close enough to jim because thats what players do they dont leave a collector chest for example far from the person you are about to sell to you drop right next to him and that message "sell" is pretty clear that its selling what you have on you not just the chest so im pretty sure that anyone who will encounter this wont do it again but its rare's fault.@inboundbomb said in Rare fix the ashen chests!:
Working as intended. Every item has always been counted for and sold separately. Why should this be any different? Your crew messed up and will learn from it. At least you get something for the chest now.
No one from my crew messed up it was a poor design job if the chest got opened then it was logical that it would count them and dont tell me that why this time it should be diffrently before you didnt had megs fire destruction mechanics and now you do so things are changing and adding up to the game so its on Rare not us.
@marsmayflower As i told the others why should it be obvious?
If ive opened it and i can sell it then it makes sense to count them all or not let you sell the chest if you have something in it, it was a poor design thats it.@faceyourdemon It's just an oversight on Rare's part. I'm sure no one even thought about it since we have had collector's chests to carry items for a while. We just can't sell collector's chests. Now that we can sell the chest, it's understandable that they didn't consider selling it while it's full. This is something they should look into but it's not worth getting angry over. You certainly don't need to take your frustration out on Rare. They are doing a great job at giving us new and free content, which of course can come with bugs or other issues. Bring the problem to their attention with respect and admiration for what they do for us instead of scolding them for an honest mistake.
@testakleze They are doing an amazing job but no one is taking "anger" on them its called feedback we are adults and we can handle that.
And i didnt thought about selling it all with the chest ive just stood infront of jim and saw that i can sell it makes sense that if ive opened it
It should count them or not let me sell it because there are items inside.@faceyourdemon I may have read your attitude wrong. I assumed you were frustrated and blaming rare.
It would be a nice quality of life improvement to be able to sell the chest with the items inside and receive credit for all of its contents, but this would only work with the ashen chests and the items that are also sold to Jim, or Duke in the future. Ashen chests are the only fillable chest that can sell but they can hold items that aren't sold to the same NPCs. I guess they could prevent the chest from being sold unless it's empty or still locked so you don't have items disappear without getting credit. Then like you said, give credit for the items inside, if and only if they can normally also be sold to the same NPC. The tomes, ritual skulls, or anything else the bilgerats will take.
@testakleze
Its all good ^^"
Everything youve said is correct if it will be in the game it would have to be for the same npc but i dont mind also not to see it but letting you sell something and ignoring the rest of the stuff is bad it could have been just like when you hold a sword and approach the collector chest it says that you cant fill it with your bone crusher sword, was a bad move everyone who did it wont do it again but its enough to leave you with a salty taste from this adventure.@rattlyfob so what if i did it was still opened so either it shouldnt let me sell it because it had itmes in it or count them.
I didnt planned to do that but when i stood next to jim with it in my hands it said sell so i did your point make zero sense so is your broken logic. And by the way the second thing youve said was the funniest thing ive heard in a while and ill walk you through it, from your point of view it means that pirates are looking for metal and wooden boxes and not whats inside them? Lol
Its like ill give to my gf a gift and she will throw the gift and keep the wraping paper and thank me, from your logic because its so obvious.@burnbacon hahaha i will say the same thing ive told the last guy when someone gives you a gift you dont keep the wrapping paper and throw away whats inside and pirates hunt for treasures not for their metalic or wooden boxes so you're wrong.
@itz-majman First of all content is adding to the game so if it dosent matter what was before, you couldnt do many things before and know you can so its nothing to so with my "founder" title it was common sense and if you cant sell them together then it shouldnt let you sell it if its open with items inside.
Dont act like a blind fan boy, i love Sea of Thieves and Rare they are amazing devs but feedback is feedback and they made a small wrong choice and thats a fact.@faceyourdemon said in Rare fix the ashen chests!:

I didnt planned to do that but when i stood next to jim with it in my hands it said sell so i did your point make zero sense so is your broken logic. So we know that Jim will take the chest or the contents. Considering there are several chests that are cursed in the game it would be fair to assume that the box has some significant value.
Consider the following... if jim is willing to pay for the box and its contents why would he want to remind you to take the contents out instead of just pay less for both?My suggestion. Instead of saying this is Rare's fault, simply try this:
Suggestion: make it so that Ashen Chests, while opened and holding other treasures inside, cannot be sold without a prompt popping up to tell us. Somewhat like selling a merchant item at one location when you have a voyage to deliver such an item at a different location.I can understand expecting it to work the way you hoped, but I can also understand it not working that way. These NPCs in Sea of Thieves are con artist jerks, hehe - Especially Stitcher Jim!!
@rattlyfob hahaha because its a game maybe i just got scammed by Stitcher Jim but im salty either way XD
But i dont think that was their intention i just dont think they saw it happening and i would have notice it in insider but i went for a vacation for a month in Japan and just came back yesterday so i couldnt really check the insider mode when it was still experimental.@electricknights haha ive never trusted him and got scammed and i agree with your idea but you need to understand that it wasnt an idea i just stood infront of him after holding the chest for the first time and then before ive dropped the chest to the floor to get the tome out i saw the popup SELL so ive pressed on it, it makes sense.
And ive made my opinion more blunt because some people were acting like blind fan boys instead of taking a cold feedback just straight away defending a poor choice.@faceyourdemon
Haha, no, I know. You're not the only person that did that and sold full chests. I didn't do that, but I did wonder about it.
If there's one thing I always trust with this game - it's that this game will troll me, lol. I always exercise caution, haha.@electricknights hahaha yeah it was a friend of mine who did it and we stored three tomes in one of them and he did it but i adress this post as i did it because anyone could have done it he just got the chest quicker then me but i could have done the same.
My precious tomes 😭@seanethermore said in Rare fix the ashen chests!:
Wait, you can sell open chests? Someone at golden sands is going to be super happy when they spawn there...
Clearly that is a glitch that Rare has overlooked. I have sold empty chests to Stitcher Jim. The game registers it as a locked chest. Sell them now because I’m sure this glitch won’t last for long.
@faceyourdemon just a quick tip, maybe send this in as a bug report it might actually be taken care of in that case
@faceyourdemon Could be worst. I had three Captains not drop their loot and more importantly the letters you need to get the key and chests.
Sounds like a good suggestion. Well spotted OP, that's likely to confuse a few people.
I think you can sell unopened chests to Jim if you don't get a key. So maybe they just didn't realise that anyone would try what you did.
I doubt you'll be the last pirate to make that mistake. You didn't set yourself back too badly though. The Tome RNG seems pretty good. I got all 5 from just 6 chests.
@faceyourdemon to face this problem from another point of view it comes down to the programming.
Each item in the game will be an instance of a class with it's own variables such as name, price etc.
When a chest like this one is created, it acts like a barrel - it "contains" all of the other items in some way when they are deposited - most likely as an array of "held items" inside of it.
When you sell the item the game will simply register the value of that item and not the things inside of it.I can't see them changing it, but you've done what we get so little of now in this game - experimented and learnt from your mistakes!
happy sailing.
@boxcar-squidy Thank you im glad you see it that way at that night we have found more and sold them seperately its not too hard to find them.
@sshteeve I respect that and thought about it but its something that was needed to said, maybe they will fix it next patch.
My issue with some others here is that they have tried to put it on me its not my fault it was something that should have been addressed before i do not condemn the whole game im simply presenting feedback and they acted like blind fan boys which i hate, you can love something from the bottom of your heart and be passionate about its great but never go blind when you hear constructive feedback.@faceyourdemon You're not wrong. In fact @LucianSanchez82 and I made the decision to first of all open the box, but then to sell the tomes separately to be sure. We then wondered what would happen if we sold the box.
There has been a lack of communication about this feature, but I love that we could actually explore something properly, like when the thrones landed last year.@sshteeve said in Rare fix the ashen chests!:

There has been a lack of communication about this feature, but I love that we could actually explore something properly, like when the thrones landed last year.I think at the least they could make a warning pop up that you have to confirm before selling a chest if it has an item in. Or perhaps just make it impossible to sell without removing the items first. We just happened to be lucky to empty the chest first I guess. Selling the empty chest after was really just an after thought to see what would happen.
