Tall Tale Rewards & PvP

  • During today's dev stream with Summit and Pace they were discussing the lack of stealable loot that is on ships while they work on the tall tales. The main issue with stealing any kind of totem/or tall tale piece from someone is there is really no advantage to doing so. The PvP'r gets nothing out of it and the crew doing the tall tale gets their voyage ruined by getting the pieces stolen.

    The Idea:

1.) Add multiple pieces of sellable loot that you acquire throughout the voyage.
2.) Make the totems or voyage specific pieces unable to steal or hide. Have it so they can be permanently attached to the ship similarly to the shroud breaker. That way even if the ship does sink they would still have the required pieces to complete the tale.

  • My thoughts are that nothing that either of them think matters a jot to me. It isn’t our responsibility to make sure our ships have loot on them for them to steal. There’s plenty to do in SOT without having to spoil other people’s adventure.

Hopefully they will move on to another game and let other people enjoy a once beautiful game.

  • Tall Tales was intentionally created without "attractive" loot by Rare in order to discourage "theft". The underlying thought being that these are immersive private story based mini adventures within the bigger world of SoT.

While not actively "blocking" players freedom in how they play, Rare hoped to discourage interference. Or at the very least to not encourage it.

So I think it's fine the way it is. Just a shame that d-bags like Summit play this game. They tend to just attract more juvenile jerks to the game.

My opinion; if you discover somebody doing a Tall Tales just leave them alone. Just like if you saw someone enjoying a good book.

  • @viperishemu2992 you put it far more eloquently than I. Thanks

  • @rusty-xbone Not the first time I've run into this topic :)

  • Unstealable TT items would be excellent. Definitely don't add more loot. You'll find plenty of extra stuff laying around.

The problem is that doing a tall tale doesn't preclude you from collecting loot and there is no way for other ships to tell you have no loot on board or are only doing a tall tale. The only way to find out is to get on their ship or sink it and see what floats up and most crews are not going to let you look on their ship.

The devs obviously want ships to be carrying loot around, since it increases the stakes and player tension when there is something to lose. That's why you can also do a regular voyage in addition to having a tall tale active.

However due to the RNG nature of voyages that would end up sending players all over, they usually just focus on the tale to get it completed in the shorted amount of time possible. So players who are "just doing a tall tale" are aggravated when they are attacked by players who can't possibly tell if they are carrying anything worth stealing or not.

Honestly im glad they can be stolen. Im just recently started the tall tales and am soloing them 5 times each. If i didnt have to look out for other ships it would be way to easy. Seriously, tall tales are a boring grind of sailing island to island with no way to fail except other players

  • Summit and Pace play this game how it's intended to be played purely by name alone. Sea of THIEVES. It's a pirate game and people complain that they lose their stuff to people who sink them in such a game that is purpose built for that purpose. People seem to forget this fact and get upset when someone sinks them or steals their stuff. The more mechanics that are added into the game that allow for player vs player interaction is always going to be good and that's why FoTD was added and is such a massive success.

I agree with Summit and his idea of adding more stealable loot to the game. I've always been a fan of something you held on your ship that accumulated gold value the more time you have it on your ship. Perhaps something you buy from the Order of Souls that collects the souls of slain enemies that you can later sell. Maybe gold hoarders can have an item that accumulates interest over time or added it's value based on how many other items you sell to the company.

I never bothered with tall tales because I found them boring and the rewards aren't really worth the time. I play this game for pvp. I don't agree with the concept of allowing players having more 'unstealable' loot on a pvp pirate game. Makes no sense thematically. We shouldn't be catering to the pve side of the debate but rather looking at what the game is. It's a pirate game. Advocating for more features that discourage pvp is just wrong.

Also, thinking that people aren't going to pirate in a pirate game is just stupid. They didn't intend to discourage interference because you can't see what x person is doing until you're up on them on their ship. Interference will happen regardless but it's up to the individual whether or not they sink them or not. I'm more inclined not to sink someone if they have loot I can take. I'll take the loot and leave, but if they have nothing and the situation previous was them constantly running away from me then i'm going to sink them regardless if they're on a tall tale or not.

  • I rather the tall tale items be items you don't carry, but be placed in your inventory like other items. Losing loot from other types of voyages is annoying, but just part of the game play. Losing loot from a TT is just downright frustrating. You already have to complete the tale five times just the get the commendations and now you want me to repeat it even more times because somebody wants to steal a stupid totem. No thank you, theres tons of things to steal in this game. So I agree add other things to steal, go ahead, but don't make me repeat over and over.

  • @d3adst1ck I'm not blaming players for attacking ships that are doing Tall Tales. I've attacked them too. I'm just pointing out why Rare made Tall Tales Loot "worthless". Obviously, until you've checked, there's no way of knowing if someone is doing Tall Tales or carrying loot or both. If they have loot, by all means take it.

My last comment was simply to point out that once you discover someone just doing Tall Tales, leave them alone to enjoy the story. Don't sink them or steal their Tall Tales stuff. That's just being a jerk.

Hi, i disagree with you on the point about SOT is a pirate game. A pirate is a person that decided to lives out of the law by attacking regular ships of real of fictive nation. Here there si no nations and most of the time, pirates were not attacling each other. So SOT is presented as a pirate game bu it is not.

  • really with summit ? a guy who is really toxic and childish get asked...allright...i think its to much loot like it is now, cpts who drop skulls on every island easily event voyages for more villanous skulls...gems on every corner..and what tall tales the most people are done with tall tales. sot adventure mode isnt just about pvp

  • I've collected over 12 million gold and never attacked a ship unless it attacked me first and so can they!
