Quantic Foundry Survey - Gamer Motivation Profile - Nick Yee - The Science of Gamer Motivation

  • A few years back I came across a gamer motivation study called the Daedalus Project which looked at the psychology of mmorpg games, it was an absolutely fascinating in depth read, but it's now closed although you can read the findings here:

    The Daedalus Project

I've always been fascinated by gamer and game psychology and recently discovered that something called The Quantic Foundry exists - it's basically a market research company focused on gamer motivation but underpinned by a great deal of actual scientific research, hence The Gamer Motivation Model.

You can take the survey or read about the model here, it's free and informative -

    The Science of Gamer Motivation

Here's part of my results :D

I thought it would be interesting to see the makeup of the Sea of Thieves community, much like we did with the Bartle test very early on :)

Well this is Craggy's results, interesting survey.

It's like getting a reading from "Tea leaves" I'm still working it out :)
edit: apparently Motivation profile... I'm Proficient and Social... I'm fine with that, seems fairly balanced.

  • Looks about right.

Whoa, definitely looking like we have a whole bunch of creativity going on here so far!

  • @katttruewalker

Mine is basically what I guessed, I use games as a means of escapism, so enjoy games where my decisions and actions can change the game or has consequences.
I suppose in a psychological view it would be if you feel powerless in the real world you are more likely to be drawn to games where you can make a change or diffrence whether that be good or bad. :)

Edit: Although looking back they do seem to have missed out my love for Overwatch, and BR games.

  • Interesting stuff

  • Well I wish I could say I was surprised...

  • It's pretty accurate. The game recommendations they give even match my tastes!

  • mhmm, nothing that really wonders me xD
very accurate, thats why im over 250k GamerScore xD

    GamerMotivation

  • Immersion, Action, Social and Creativity are definitely all things that appeal to me in video games. And, luckily, things I get to enjoy a lot in Sea of Thieves!

  • @KattTruewalker

Thank you very much for this post and opportunity for this particular type of survey. I have always had a passion for psychology. Was one of my loves in college.

Here are my results: Crowheart's Gamer Motivation Profile

An Action-Oriented, Proficient, Completionist, Social, Deeply Immersed, and Creative gamer it seems.

    Primary

    Secondary

  • Hmm always interesting...

  • @x-crowheart-x

You're welcome, and likewise it's something I've always been very interested in :)

Really enjoying seeing these different profiles!

  • @katttruewalker

I like seeing them too. I took countless surveys that scored you on all kinds of diagrams, grids, and even one that identified you as a particular type of ship during my professional life. Also administered and taught what to do with such surveys.

Fun to apply the principles to video gaming and see how it translates to the types of pirates here in the forums and out there on the sea.

  • I would like to say I am suprised, but I am really not.
I know that I am a completionist, I love creating and designing, and that I very much love community - I suppose that's one of the reasons I love Sea of Thieves so much. This community is like no other I have ever come across.

  • @katttruewalker

Not too surprised, great survey link.

  • @KattTruewalker

I was thinking it would be nice to see the gamer motivation profiles of the devs. You think you could get some of them to take the survey and post their results here? It would be very fun and interesting to see how the gaming minds of the devs compare to that of the players in the community.

  • @x-crowheart-x

Welp, we can ask and see what happens ;)

  • Well, they're not wrong. This was a really cool survey, thanks @KattTruewalker for posting!

  • In "Game recommendations" they recommended I play the games that I listed in the "3 favorite games" category... hmmm

  • Just gunna post the bolded quote at the top of the results page because id like to think that is a better description than what the paragraphs about high percentages for each thing describes..

Action-Oriented, Persistent, Relaxed, Social, Grounded, and Practical

    I like that. Lol

  • @KattTruewalker
    Ahoy there, me hearty!

  • @katttruewalker
I'm also curious how these would have looked for any of us five years ago; or how it will look in five years. While I certainly still care about the mastery of the game, and I thought I answered in a way that would predict that, it does seem other things are more important to me now. Competition and truly competetive games are also less appealing to me now, than they were a few years ago. I love games that make me feel like I'm in another world.

  • @erinom3

I'm sure like any survey the answers can change depending on mood, day of the week, all sorts of reasons, but I do also wonder if over time our preferences change to a significant degree or there would always be some indication that we have a slight 'competitive' edge for example.

This is one of the features good testers design for, that they ask similar questions in different ways to test for consistency and longer tests are usually speaking, more 'reliable' overall.

Tastes can tend to change over time. I used to hate any form of first or 3rd person shooters but over time I found myself enjoying some titles under those categories.

  • Pretty much what I expected 🙂

  • Hmmm... Apparently I am a grinder who enjoys action. Oh wait! I already knew that. :P

    Your Gamer Motivation Profile :
Action-Oriented, Proficient, Driven, Social, and Creative

  • I'll just say mine is almost 100% motivated by Achievement, ie getting commendations and 10% exploring the open seas solo.
