The Mercenary Set (Clothing)

  • As many of you probably know, recently Rare announced that one of the most exclusive sets, the Mercenary set, will soon be available for everybody to purchase. This is most likely due to all of the complaints from people who invited friends to play. In case you are unaware of what the Mercenary set is, it was apart of a time-limited promotion in Germany that occurred around the time of the game’s launch. You could obtain this set by PURCHASING three months of XBOX live gold. This set was also given to players who purchased the game after trying it during the friends play free event. Now that we have the background of the item in question out of the way, let’s get into my complaint.

As one of the select few who actually PURCHASED the Mercenary set, this change aggravates me. I payed actual MONEY to receive an exclusive set and now they are going to give it away for free. Essentially, I wasted my money. Thankfully I am one of the lucky ones, I got the set for something along the lines of $10. The keyword is LUCKY. What Rare failed to take into consideration is the fact that many people purchased this set after the promotion for INSANE price tags. People have payed hundreds of dollars for the “exclusive” Mercenary Set and now all of their money is going to waste. Now I know a lot of you are probably going to make the argument that “you should have known that it wasn’t exclusive when you purchased”, that’s completely false. They marketed this set as a one time exclusive, and during the time when the set was available, there had been no mention at ALL of the possibility that exclusive sets, such as the Black Dog Set, would be available in game later on. This is a serious injustice, most people wouldn’t have purchased the set if they knew that a year later it would be free for everyone. In fact, we basically had our money STOLEN from us. Something has to be done for the people who actually bought the set during the first promotion. Now I’m not talking about something outrageous like a total refund, but I firmly believe that anyone who used an original promotional code should receive an ENTIRELY different set. This seems like the only reasonable thing to do. A second set would please the friends play free players AND the people who spent their hard earned money purchasing an “exclusive” set.

Hopefully something can be done about this.

  • None of the promos I have found list the set as "exclusive" except for the German one which lists it as "The Mercenary DLC Pack is Exclusive for 3 months", not explicitly "exclusive" like the Ferryman or Blackdog.

This set is a Timed Exclusive and is now being made available to all as intended like the Onyx/Obsidian, Huntress, and Spinal items.

    Nothing wrong here.

  • To be honest, I believe that anything that becomes regional and can not be easily acquired elsewhere in the world should be free. It is unfair that something should be released only in one country, or, each country should have its exclusive set.

  • @exeternautical Actually the set was given to you as a reward for purchasing three months of Xbox Live. You didn't pay for the set, you paid for the Xbox Live time - getting the set with it was a promotional reward. Something many companies do to encourage sales, I can't see how anyone is surprised that Rare are putting THEIR set in to the loot pool (something else other games have done in the past) - it is their property to do with as they please, after all.

Maybe they'll do something like alter the set slightly so others can differentiate one from the other, but I doubt that'll happen.

  • @exeternautical
sigh... will you people just get over it.
News flash - you're the only person who cares about what your barbie doll is wearing.

  • You said that you paid that set year ago and now coming to all player to buy and have it, you don't need to get refund because that is like Destiny 2 come for free for all year after realase so that is the same people who bought the game they wasted they money for something what come for free year later.
And nobody get refund for that.
So you who paid real money for Mercenary set you will not be refunded.
That is the way how games works from 2017 to this day and after.

  • You got to have it long before anybody else - the way I see it, you weren't paying for the set, but for the time you got to have it exclusive to yourself. In reality, it's a digital item and as such it holds no actual value over anything else (including other digital items and sets) - only whatever value you place onto it. Since you placed its value at $10, I fully understand why you feel cheated, but you weren't - you still have it and I still don't; it's as simple as that.

  • The old Mercenary DCL Eye Patch is not the same as the Re-Released Mercenary Pack.

I get where you are coming from i do but the argument could also be made that it is not the same set and you could also be outraged by that fact.

Or you could be glad the Eye Patch is different thus solidifying you an Exclusive item never to be seen again albeit just an Eyepatch.

    Different strokes for different folks.

Edit: @luciansanchez82 Maybe they'll do something like alter the set slightly so others can differentiate one from the other, but I doubt that'll happen.

Eye Patch is different (not that i have the new set to confirm mind you, the promo art shows a different design however)

I already said this in my post, I don’t want a refund.

  • You say that the release of the Mercenary set is likely due to the complaints (complaints I don't agree with, btw), but the fact that Rare released the set for the Friends Play Free event indicates that they were already ready and willing to do more with the set.
I've always thought that the Mercenary set would get a bigger release, eventually, especially because of that 3 month exclusive thing the promotion material said. I understand not everyone had, or will have, that view, but that's where I'm coming from.

People paid for the Xbox Gold Pass. The set was a free bonus.

Also, the third market sales 1) have absolutely zero to do with Rare (obviously) and 2) are a great reason for why Rare possibly should make such sets available on their own terms. They've been on record discouraging such expensive purchases - and explaining that they'd make the items in question (at that time) available in game (that was centered around the Ebon Eye of Reach and Drum, but also showcased their stance on all such third party sales).

Anyway, as someone who has paid for such things, I can understand the feeling, but I believe there's nothing wrong with what they are doing at all.

    Just my thoughts!

  • @ixxolos Honestly, as long as there is something distinguishes the set from the purchasable set, I would be content. (Admittedly I can’t speak for anybody else who bought the set because like you said “Different strokes for different folks”

  • Like @Archangel-Timmy said, this is NOT an exclusive set. It has never been labeled as such, except by fans and translations that got it wrong.
It has only ever been labeled as "Free with the Purchase of" or "Code giveaway", never Exclusive.
So you are getting upset for no reason.

How am I getting upset for no reason? People payed actual MONEY for this set. Even if it was never officially “exclusive”, that fact doesn’t change. Like I said, I’m one of the LUCKY ones, I got my set for a small sum of money. Imagine if you were one of the UNLUCKY ones. There are people who have spent Hundreds of Dollars to receive this set (If you find that hard to believe do some research into Sea of Thieves DLC code prices). That’s like me selling you a shirt and then a second later handing it out for free to everyone who walks by. You would be upset too if you spent that much money for no reason. There’s also the fact that, like I said, they never made it EXPLICITLY clear that sets from promotions would be purchasable in game. If you can find an official statement from Rare (during the time of the Mercenary Set Promotion) stating that promotional sets could eventually be bought in game, then I will fully agree with your statement and delete this thread.

  • @exeternautical No you didn't, you paid money for 3 months of Xbox Live and got the Mercenary set for free with it.
Of course if you bought a code for the set from Ebay or something, then that is your own fault for spending money on it, and you can't hold Rare responsable for that.
And if you bought the 3 months of Xbox Live specificly for the set, then that is your choice to do so, but it doesn't change the fact that the set came with the 3 months of Xbox Live, not the other way around.

And as for them not stating that they would make promotional items available in game, they never said they wouldn't do it either.
Only 2 sets have been classified as Exclusives, and those are the Black Dog set(Pre-Order) and the Ferryman set(Controller).

  • I play this game on PC, should I lose out on a promotional (just to be clear, it's not an exclusive) item just because I didn't buy a product that has no value (3 months Xbox Live) to me? All this change is doing is making something that, previously, was only available to console players available to ALL of the Sea of Thieves community.

  • @exeternautical My issue with this, like the chips ahoy thing, is how do I, as an Australian who gets no special offers, ever get access to content like the mercenary set.
I have the stuff for the controller and the stuff for preorder. I couldn't get the mercenary set and I can't buy Chips Ahoy whatever they are. I also have great difficulty getting any of the stream items because these streams happen in the middle of my night.
I'm not for exclusive content becoming available for everyone to buy in game or eventually through micro transactions, but there has to be a way for someone who didn't have access to your opportunity to gain access to these items too.

  • i dont understand how people spent hundreds of dollars for the mercenary set? @Exeternautical and a different set wouldnt please the friends play free people, because they handed out codes for the mercenary set, not something else.

  • @exeternautical In that case it is ok to want some other minor things for you what purchesd Mercenary set, like some good Sails or cannons or hull paint what nobody can have but only you who bought that set or paid game more then real price.

  • They should not fuss with them sets and ceep walking the line. Special sets for special conditions. Every subsequent change annoys those people who fulfilled the original conditions. They must not mess it up.

F.e. I'd be really p****d if someday you could buy my preorder sets like anything else.
